Preview: No. 13 Hoosiers Open 2016 Season vs. New Mexico

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 13-ranked Indiana University Hoosiers open the 2016 season against the New Mexico Lobos on Friday at the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament in South Bend, Ind. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. ET.

Live stats for Friday's match can be found at IUHoosiers.com. Indiana will finish play at the tournament on Sunday with a game against UC Irvine at 11:00 a.m. ET.

SETTING THE SCENE
• The No. 13-ranked Indiana Hoosiers enter the 2016 season coming off another terrific season in 2015, reaching the NCAA Tournament for a record 29-straight season and 40th overall in program history.
• IU earned a national seed for the 11th time in the last 13 years, beating UConn before falling to No. 1 Wake Forest in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals.
• The Hoosiers are undefeated in their past five season openers and have posted a record of 8-1-5 in opening games dating back to 2002. The only loss in that stretch coming to California (1-2) in the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic.
• This weekend's tournament marks the first time that Indiana has opened a season away from Bloomington since 2012, when the Hoosiers beat Saint Louis and Cincinnati in the SLU Tournament. IU would go on to win the program's eighth national title that season.

NEWS AND NOTES
• Senior MF Tanner Thompson and junior D Grant Lillard were two of 30 players named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List in July. Indiana is one of just four schools in the nation to have two players on the prestigious list, joining UCLA, Seattle and Boston University. Thompson and Lillard are two of three Big Ten players on the list, along with Rutgers' Jason Wright.
• Tanner Thompson and Grant Lillard were both unanimous preseason All-America selections, as both were honored by College Soccer News and Top Drawer Soccer.
• Grant Lillard was also named the top defender in the nation in a preseason poll conducted by Top Drawer soccer of the nation's head coaches.
• The Hoosiers return nine starters from last year's team that made the Sweet Sixteen, including All-America honoree Tanner Thompson and All-Big Ten award winners Grant Lillard , Andrew Gutman and Francesco Moore .
• After qualifying for the NCAA Tournament last year, the Hoosiers extended their streak to 29-straight appearances in the NCAA Tournament.

SCOUTING THE LOBOS
• The University of New Mexico Lobos enter 2016 off a successful 2015 season that saw the team post a record of 8-6-4, reaching the quarterfinals of the Conference USA Tournament, but failing to make the NCAA Tournament.
• The Lobos have been a consistent presence in the NCAA Tournament, however, qualifying 11 times since 2001.
• UNM was picked to tie for fourth place in the league in a preseason poll conducted of the conference's coaches, finishing behind Kentucky, Charlotte, FIU and tied with South Carolina.
• New Mexico returns eight starters from last year's squad that placed sixth in C-USA, 2016 preseason All-Conference USA selections F Niko Hansen and MF Chris Wehan.

SERIES HISTORY
• In the overall history between Indiana and New Mexico dating back to the 2004 season, the teams have split the two matches.
• IU won the last match in 2009, 3-2, but fell to the Lobos in the first meeting between the two teams in 2004, 1-0, in double overtime.

HOOSIERS IN THE NATIONAL POLLS
• The Hoosiers enter the season ranked No. 13 in the nation by Top Drawer Soccer, No. 14 by College Soccer News and No. 15 by the NSCAA.
• Last year the Hoosiers finished the season ranked No. 15 by the NSCAA and No. 17 in the NCAA RPI.

LILLARD, THOMPSON RANKED IN TOP-20 BY TDS
• IU junior Grant Lillard was named the No. 4 player in the nation by Top Drawer Soccer - the highest-ranked defender in the country and the top-ranked Big Ten player.
• Tanner Thompson was ranked No. 17 in the nation overall and the eighth-best midfielder.

PRESEASON BIG TEN HONORS
• The Hoosiers were picked to finish second in the Big Ten in a poll conducted of the league's coaches, behind only Maryland.
• MF Tanner Thompson , D Grant Lillard and D Andrew Gutman were named to the B1G Preseason Honors List.

IU ADDS ALL-HORZON LEAGUE TRANSFER HYACENTH
• IU head coach Todd Yeagley announced the addition of Belmont transfer Rashad Hyacenth on March 21.
• Hyacenth was a two-time All-Horizon League honoree at Belmont, including earning Second-Team accolades in 2015 after scoring seven goals.
• Hyacenth will have two years of eligibility remaining at Indiana.
