Press conference

One thing I saw from Coach D that I never saw in Coach Woody!! Coach D had a red and white tie on he is bought in and proud to be our coach. Woody never wore red.
Maybe not but he was a sharp dressed man, one thing I thought he did right. Don't like coaches who wear track suits or hoodies at a game.

This is not just 'talk' from Devries. He coaches and believes so similarly to Coach Cig that I have to believe Coach DeVries knows what he's doing on a similar level.

He even used the exact same phrase as Cig "the standard is the standard" for the players in roster construction and their buyin and their work and his work. (!!) Said follow the process doing all the small things at a high level and the winning takes care of itself.

Then he sounded the same when he said he doesn't run three hour practices he runs 90 minute ones, 70 minutes during the season ... Going full out, because he believes the players learn quicker that way and then, IN THE GAME, making decisions quickly is something they've already faced.
Pretty much exactly what Cig says about you don't feel the pressure when you practice that way, the game feels much the same even when it's the fourth quarter.

Like this coach a lot. Great hire! Hope he wins of course... :) But great hire.
,
I was hoping someone would post the comparison to Cig. IUFB had a good year reducing injuries in my opinion. Sure there were injuries, but we saw a lot more of the opponents on the turf than our guys. Fast, physical and fearless works in basketball too.

I gave credit to our football strength and conditioning and how we practiced for keeping our players in the game. I am curious who the staff will be and does that include strength and conditioning. I think we need an upgrade there too.

Yes, him ditching WVU after one season rubs me the wrong way. That is a program that has been way more successful than IU the last twenty years.
I'm sure if UNC throws an additional $2M at him in a year or two, he'll bolt for Chapel Hill. Why wouldn't he?

Then let’s push Pam to purchase some plaid coats. I don’t care if the coach wears a tutu if he can get his team back to playing the way the IU fans would be proud of… kind of kidding about the tutu🙀

They're both signed. He can't make the call or even talk about them. They'd both have to make the move on their side to flip.
Yep, we both know THAT never happens! I am confident they're both going to know through their channels that the new IU coach would like to congratulate them on their fine careers and would be happy to talk with them at any time. Heck at this point, he needs to talk with them in case they wind up back in the portal.

Don't know about Drake, but whenever I saw him at WVU he had on a quarter zip. I thought that's what they'd give him at the PC, instead of a jersey. If I was Dolson, I'd have handed him one, and then said, "and we know how hard a worker you are, so we didn't want you to have to waste time shopping" and given him 5 more! I don't like track suits and hoodies, but the quarter zip looks fine to me. I know I'd hate coaching bball in a suit and tie.

If UNC wanted him it means he is doing great here, and UNC doesn't have more bball resources so than us, so why would he leave a very good thing to restart somewhere else? The same factors that make hiring an Otz, Drew, Oats, etc. extremely difficult or basically impossible would apply to UNC trying to get IU's coach.

Thought he looked nervous doesn't seem to have a out going personality to be honest pretty vanilla.
He's not Johnny Carson, and I'd love a coach who has tons of charisma and presence like Pearl or Pitino (or Coach Knight), but it's not a big factor. He did fine, not as uncomfortable as Archie and I'd imagine he's going to give good honest answers and not be a dick in interviews. The press will like him fine I believe. I absolutely hated CMW for dissing Don Fisher like he did. Guy is too nice and too good to get that treatment. Anxious to hear CDD with Fish.

I do think Pope is a really good interview and has charisma. And, I think Beard has a similar swagger as Coach Knight did. But, I'm happy with what I've heard and seen so far.

Just cheap shots from the cheap seats. The folks saying that are the same ones that have been griping and will probably continue to do so until CDD wins them over, and that's fine I guess. If CDD were to come out of the gate hot, and win the conference next year, he'll be in line for a raise and extension just like May got.

Yea. I really hope he does well and has a Kelsey/Pope/Dusty type first season, which is possible with the portal and a lot of NIL. We're gonna see how well he can build a roster here in the next three weeks...

I want the full story about him shaving his eyebrows back in 2010. Is it true that his barber had an accident and took a chunk out of one of his eyebrows, leading Woody to shave the other eyebrow so it matched?

Did he really give a pregame interview with velcro taped to his face?

...and I want to hear Crean's version of the Kyrie Irving story too.

lololololol

Holy shit that's funny

we all know the story from peegs' chat that night. crean took a dump, clogged the toilet, Dakich stood up, ripped off his shirt....and the Irvings said "no thanks!"

The more I read and hear about DD, the more sense the hire makes. The operation at the highest level of basketball (where IU is or should be) is massive. Being able to piece it together, especially in IU's current state, is going to take a coach who is a program builder....in addition to all other things. Kentucky didn't have to be rebuilt....IU does. Dude needs a hard hat and sneakers...basically a general contractor. I think he knows what he's getting into...something Archie Miller didn't. He's a midwest guy...so he understands the recruiting landscape at IU. He talked about team chemistry, visavis the portal, and "resources", i.e. NIL and university commitments. IU, in its current state, can't afford rinse and repeat. A coach needs to recognize why it hasn't worked at IU in the past. What do Archie Miller, Tom Crean and Mike Woodson have in common? Not much.....except they all fell short. So there are factors at IU in particular that have to be changed or improved or both. Hopefully, DD is the cure for the ailment.

Yeah I mean I never complained about Knight's red sweater, but generally I think a head coach should be in a nice suit at games. Certainly not the most important thing though.

Ironically, neither did CMW, for that matter.
