Clearly a first game as there were some sloppy moments, clock management, etc.

Biggest issue: Defens: stopping the run, some pass interferences, and didn’t look like RT would be stopping formidable B10 offenses tonight. But I also think Allen & Hagen will get things cleaned up as they go forward.

Positives: Offense has talent, weapons, and played well overall. Reese Taylor, Hale, Timion & Whop looked great. Had good ball Control running ball. Very good foundation to build off of offensively tonight.

Did what came to do with the win on the road. Absolutely think they will keep improving and still optimistic about the year.

I thought the end of game management was good. I'm usually nervous as hell. Maybe we have better talent but overall happy w/ what I saw. Penix is exciting as hell to watch but Peyton deserves to start and played very well. D needs help. Love the take aways. Penalties! Oy vey! lol. Love my Hoosiers.

Solid road win to start the season. Certainly not flawless football, and the D needs work, but the offense was impressive at times and both QBs looked very capable. The outcome of the game was never really in doubt, something Penn State and Michigan State fans can't say about their games. I like our bowl eligibility chances. Go IU!

They won and that is what matters. Offense put up 31 points and 465 yards, made plays and spread the ball around 7 players with at least one carry and 10 with at least one catch. The receiving corp is the strength of the offense as expected. I also think IU has some very good QBs that complement each other. Concerned about the O-line and the running backs. No back averaged over 4 yards a carry and the longest run (from a back) from scrimmage was 14 yards. Stevie Scott looks to be a good power back. Defense did enough to win, but had problems stopping the run, and did not generate negative plays or havoc very often. They looked a little off, which is expected given their youth and the first game. Lastly, I have no idea about the caliber of FIU's offense and defense. They are a team with a large number of transfers, second chance player and Florida talent that wants to stay home. I think some of the individual talent is pretty good, but they have too many holes in the lineup to challenge most power 5 opponent.

Impressed with the offense. Lots of weapons, solid play from both QBs, good push up front from the OL.
Major concerns about the D. No pressure to speak of from the DL. Linebackers looked painfully slow (much like the days before Scales, Covington, and …. ? (forgive my senility, the guy who got all the strips and fumble recoveries a couple of years ago). Still giving up big gains on 3rd down. Hope we get some of those issues corrected before next Saturday.

I was doubting after FIU scored first and you could see a sense of nervousness but IU responded damn fine. Hope tbey stay composed like that moving forward.

Good to get the W, but IU’s limitations are pretty clear, especially on D. I think the O line, if they stay healthy, can be serviceable, and Majette and Smith give a nice 1-2 punch from the backfield. The receivers played well, but they’re thin depth wise, so good health is a necessity. Will be surprised if they don’t find ways to expand Taylor’s role. He’s too good to not touch the ball more.

Ramsey will continue to start, but he’ll be lucky to remain healthy if he continues to run that much and not get down prior to contact. Penix played well and, most importantly made few mistakes. Solid start for him.

Defensively, they struggled up front but really had trouble at the next level. They’re just thin there, and that may not get much better this year.

Good win for sure, but a reality check against a pretty middling opponent. On to the next one.

We will get rolled come big ten season if our D plays like that.

Why did he pull Ramsey? That was absurd. Game wasn’t over by any mean.

The competition only gets tougher from here. Need a much better effort next week against Virginia to have any chance to win.

He didn't actually pull Ramsey, he just played Penix for 2 drives and then Ramsey came back in. Most likely the plan was just to play Penix for one series, but after he drove the team to a TD, the staff decided to reward him with one more chance.

That was clearly planned. They wanted to get Penix some live snaps.
And again I ask why? Planned or not. Why? Ramsey is your guy or he’s not. The game wasn’t over. If I’m ramsey I’m not happy about it.

A double digit road win in Florida that wasn’t in doubt for 3 quarters. I will take those every chance I get.

Again why? You have to pull a guy to play another, no?

A lot of defensive problems were alignmt issues. Many times Ball was snapped and d not ready. A couple of questionable pass interference calls kept drives alive. The offensive line was the strength of this team and Shawndarrius Phillips is a quality back finally in shape. But yes lack of qb pressures is a concern. Linebacker play is bad. Secondary play is decent but gotta get pressure to help them.
Offensive line play was much better. They got good push on some d tackles who had some good offers. Provided a clean pocket for the most part. I liked the backs I do think Gest is the best, Steve Scott is not ready to be the every down back he is too impatient. Was surprised to see that Hale was the go to receiver. Timian is Timian and Westbrook is go get his touches. Taylor and. Philyor are difference makers. Definitely gonna need to score points this year.

I think the reason why was simply to give Penix the opportunity to become comfortable, and get the first game jitters out of the way, so that in case he's needed against Virginia/MSU, that he's good to go. Be honest with yourself, with Ramsey running as often as he does, the possibility of him getting hurt at some point is very real, and then I think you'll be glad that Penix already has some seasoning. That's how I see it.

Actually, Ramsey may have even gotten a (low-grade) concussion tonight on the last series. I pointed it out in the Live Game Thread. On that play where he ran and then slid at the last moment, he was speared directly in the side of the helmet, and his entire head and body reacted to the blow. He got up slowly and his eyes looked dazed when they showed him up close briefly. The game ended 4 plays later and Ramsey stayed in, but I am convinced his brain was bruised on that play.

I think anytime you can pull out your Penix and use it you should. That being said, this game really was never in question even though as IU fans, we know that no lead is ever safe. But I'm sure the coaches wanted to see what their Penix could do and he looked great and was very capable of going deep. I would expect to see both QBs to split minutes in the next 2 games until B10 season. For once we are just like Alabama. Lol.

The reason why is they want to play him at least 4 games this year, do t think they were worried couldn’t win and want to get him some game experience. Plus he’s FL keep d so I do think they wanted to play him at n front of family and perhaps show off the FL IU connection to recruits.

We've all known that Penix would get snaps, and it's a no-brainer.
Then start him.

Get snaps when the starting Qb was having a good night and the game was still in question? Really?

I get it when the game has already been decided or way or another but it wasn’t.

Platoon QBs? No thanks.

My initial thoughts are that it’s a quality win. Wins are hard to come by in division 1 football, so the team should take their 24 hours to celebrate, enjoy it, then get ready for a tough Virginia team.

1. The O-line was much improved. Last year they couldn’t even block an inside zone. What you’d expect after those guys got experience is improvement and team work, and that’s what we saw tonight. Their pass blocking is still yet to be seen, as FIU didn’t blitz a ton on passes, but the O-line is certainly more physical and can at least get to the right spots this year. That should give us all hope.

2. The D-line is suspect. I know that it’s only one game but the transfer from Syracuse appeared to have a rough time along with Barwick. I saw both getting pushed 5 yards into the end zone, gasping, and overpowered. Those are two 5th year guys. Now it may be a minor issue, or maybe we have depth there and will be better off next game, but it is definitely something to keep track of. The pass rush was also weak. We have to get to the QB rushing 4 this year IMHO. And lastly on the Dline, they made the linebackers look worse than the actually may be. Very difficult for linebackers to succeed when guys are getting pushed into their laps.

3. The tight ends and receivers appear to be solid yet again. 10 different guys with catches. Good blocking from Dorris in the run game. A good mix of big receivers and small shifty guys. A good mix of deep ball threats and bubble screen guys. The passing game will be robust.

4. Penix looked in control. Was getting guys lined up in the right spots occasionally. A lot of poise for a young guy. He has a nice flick of the wrist and the ball comes out beautifully. His only issue is footwork. He’s great on short passes and footwork isn’t as much of an issue, but on deep balls he’ll be hit or miss until he cleans up his footwork. He throws a nice deep ball, but can dramatically improve his accuracy. If he works on that I’d honestly say start him over Ramsey... if he can consistently get the ball to Hale and Westbrook down the field, it’s game over...

5. The secondary is inconsistent. Crawford will make an NFL play one play, and then have a mental lapse the next. He got beat on a simple drag just from bad technique. Riggins had a drive saving PI due to lazy technique. #23 had a PI from bad technique. All three are good, very talented secondary, they just need more consistent technique. I’ve been hard on Andre Brown, but he had a really good game. That was a pleasant surprise.

Lastly, FIU is pretty terrible. Decent athletes, no teamwork. Decent passion, no brains. Physically they’re about as good as you’ll see to an extent. Mentally, they aren’t Michigan State, nor do they have Ohio States coaching staff. So it’s really hard to gauge where IU is. What we do know is there are some mental and technique errors, when in the past the issue was not enough talent. That’s a serious improvement over circa 2009 IU teams. That gives reason to be extremely hopeful. The bold statement that I’ll make is that this could realistically be a 10 win team. I saw nothing today “physically” that would prevent them from being a 10win team. When I watched MSU, or NW, or PU, or PSU, or even OSU I saw no major differences. The biggest issue will be mental. All of those teams have guys who believe they can win which makes a difference, and staffs that get them ready. Can Allen get these guys ready and do they believe in themselves? That will be the key.

Teams struggle in week 1. FIU is not remotely close to the program they were in 2015 or 2016. The have upgraded their recruits in the lines..

For all the knocks Debord takes here on this board, he called s great game plan and both QBs seemed very collected and deliberate running it. Defense is a concern and Allen acknowledged that but also noted the true frosh playing. On that side. There were a lot of breakdowns in the secondary.

For a board that 90 percent said we would be lucky to win this game and would be happy with a one point victory there sure was a lot of bitching going on :). We played a whole lot of guys last night. Late in the first or early in the second half buck said we had played 73 guys and I think we took 78. So about everybody played. Offense looked good. Hale was a beast and I thought he would be our best returning reciever. Thin at RB of course and if Gest is out going forward going to need Pechac or Walker or someone to step up. D line got no pressure and the secondary made multiple errors. Need to get some things ironed out. Have a tendancy to overplay and get out of position and letting backs get outside, same as last year. Not a bad game over all especially considering some of the near upsets teams had at home.

The D is pretty bad. Giving up 28 pts against FIU, gets me thinking what are they gonna give up to B1G teams.

Nice analysis...except...how you see a 10 win team out of that mess I have no idea. 40 years experience with this program say we will fight to get 6...I don't see 7 as remotely possible unless someone lays down in front of us that is ranked. Don't see that happening...why?...it never has happened. I like my feet on the ground. Lets just work for a bowl and if we get more than that...well...it will be the first time since...well...you know.

Some of what we saw wont be fixed in a week or two. There are talent issues. But right now, I'm enjoying the win and hoping to get to conference play 3-0. After that...reality will sink in...imo only.
