Post game thoughts

A brilliant move to play Penix, as he is our only capable backup, although no game experience. If Ramsey goes down, need a backup with such experience.
Ramsey is in his third year and got the nod a starter last week. Penix is a freshman who completed eight of ten passes. This four star recruit is not a back-up. Hopefully they can continue to bring him along slowly. In the ongoing effort to upgrade the Hoosier program there are no protected position.

For a board that 90 percent said we would be lucky to win this game and would be happy with a one point victory there sure was a lot of bitching going on :). We played a whole lot of guys last night. Late in the first or early in the second half buck said we had played 73 guys and I think we took 78. So about everybody played. Offense looked good. Hale was a beast and I thought he would be our best returning reciever. Thin at RB of course and if Gest is out going forward going to need Pechac or Walker or someone to step up. D line got no pressure and the secondary made multiple errors. Need to get some things ironed out. Have a tendancy to overplay and get out of position and letting backs get outside, same as last year. Not a bad game over all especially considering some of the near upsets teams had at home.

Great summary, 100% agree, but donthink all of he defensive errors can and will be worked on and mostly corrected. What’s hard to know is if we can get the front four push to better stop the run or put pressure on he QB. That can often be more about talent, techniques and pure desire. That to me may be one most to watch.

The D is pretty bad. Giving up 28 pts against FIU, gets me thinking what are they gonna give up to B1G teams.

Coach Allen himself said week one going to need he offense to carry the defense. If time stood still and this same exact level of play is same in B10 then yes would be problematic.

But Coaches know what they need to work on and I guarantee they are going to do their best to clean up as much as they can as quickly as possible. It won’t remain static, nor will they always be playing 73 players, meaning they allowed last night o take some lumps to get some guys some legit game experience. This group will improve and so will the offense who may be able to help keep them off the field a lot too.

And again I ask why? Planned or not. Why? Ramsey is your guy or he’s not. The game wasn’t over. If I’m ramsey I’m not happy about it.
Important to get Penix meaningful reps since he is our clear #2 and had no game experience. And yes I hope Ramsey is not thrilled by losing playing time. I feel he is a competitor and will respond with even better play. Feel real good about our QB position. Not so good about our DL. Very little penetration and pressure on the quarterback.

Most of the problems I saw in the secondary were technique and angle issues. Not unexpected for the first live, full-speed action of the year. Probably fixable with drill and film work (if Bell had been properly dropped a step or two deeper he had two picks in his grasp). I'm not worried there. I think our LBs were sound in their play, but I do have concerns about speed.

The big issue as I see it is DLine play. We got pinched inside on the edges (hopefully that is technique work), and got blown up in the middle in the red zone. No pass rush to speak of. That has to get solved or we are going to struggle against better teams. But I am optimistic. A road win in week one against a team that wasn't physically inferior is a good win. A week to practice and study film and a home game next week makes me believe we will see a much improved team Saturday night. I can't wait. I hate having to watch on tv. So looking forward to spending next Saturday night in MS.

Positives: Stevie Scott ran well. Reese Taylor very effective. Majette was better than I've ever seen from him. Both QBs did what they needed to do (Penix throws with better touch on the swing pass than Lagow ever did). TE's were effective and probably need to be used more as can get some size mis-matches. OL was good, not great. D forced some turnovers. DBs were staying with their guys when IU blitzed. Punts looked ok.

Negatives: Wanted to see more 3/outs on D. Lack of push from front 4. Blitzes weren't getting to the qb.

Overall: It was a road win at a place we struggled more at 2 yrs ago. IU openers vs teams like this are rarely walks in the park that we fans want them to be. Need to build on this and be ready for UVA.

Most of the pi's were unnecessary and on badly thrown balls. If you getting beat deep and it looks catchable fine, but on a ball thrown behind on 3rd and 6 cost us getting off the field several times.

Watching teams like Cal, & Maryland Yesterday. .Let alone stud teams like Notre Dame, & Auburn. Indiana has a long long way' s to go. In Indiana high school football. .The Hoosiers are 3/A..The others are 5/A & 6/A.jmo

But isnt that exactly what Wilson said several times...more times than I care to count. Wasn't Allen brought in to solve that problem? This is my point...

Then start him.

Get snaps when the starting Qb was having a good night and the game was still in question? Really?

I get it when the game has already been decided or way or another but it wasn’t.

Platoon QBs? No thanks.

stop griping....the plan all along was to play 2 QBs at some point in the game...it gives them a chance to show different packages utilizing different strengths...think we will see some Wildcat with Taylor before the season is over

IU was replacing a lot on defense, and probably expected to take a step back to some degree. On the other hand, the offense looks to have taken a step forward. Plus, for as much as the defense struggled, it still appears much better than anything pre-Allen, which is a testament to how much he has improved things

Why not play Penix for a series or two every game? Keep him sharp and it also keeps Ramsey fresh and healthier.

Bryce Perkins will give us trouble next week. We wont see an athlete like that at QB from any Big Ten team. Hes electric. Our front 7 needs to grow up.

Nice analysis...except...how you see a 10 win team out of that mess I have no idea. 40 years experience with this program say we will fight to get 6...I don't see 7 as remotely possible unless someone lays down in front of us that is ranked. Don't see that happening...why?...it never has happened. I like my feet on the ground. Lets just work for a bowl and if we get more than that...well...it will be the first time since...well...you know.

Some of what we saw wont be fixed in a week or two. There are talent issues. But right now, I'm enjoying the win and hoping to get to conference play 3-0. After that...reality will sink in...imo only.
I came to 10 wins because I saw top notch teams STRUGGLE. I saw MSU struggle. I don’t think they’re more “talented”. I saw PU struggle to a degree. They lost a lot of guys from that defense. I saw Penn State struggle. NW and PU are comparable talent wise. I didn’t see anything that saws “oh yeah IU is bound to lose that matchup.” Even Ohio State gave up 31, although they did put up 77 and have talent. But besides OSU, I didn’t see anyone who stood out as beyond our reach this season. And the issues I saw were mostly mental from IU, not physical. The only physical question mark I have is the conditioning of our defensive lineman. At every other position I didn’t really see any other big ten team with more talent besides OSU, and that’s a first. That’s why I can see 10 wins if they put it all together. Of course, they hopefully don’t look past Virginia and Ball state. They have to take care of business first.

I do agree that other teams didn’t exactly look amazing but pump the breaks a bit. It’s week one and teams will improve. A few years ago MSU looked awful the first few weeks and then won the B1G. Hell OSU lost to VT and was dominated. That team got rolling and won a National Title. Penn St, MSU and OSU will improve, however so will we. What we can’t afford are significant injuries.

On this point, I can’t disagree more. I don’t think IU is close to those schools talent wise. The best of the BiG 10 East has better players, and more of them. Difference makers. IU might have one or two of those guys on either side of the ball, while OSU, PSU, UM, MSU, even Maryland have a good number more. Recruiting results bear that out.

These are all very solid points. Impressions are like that aren't they...vbg. We are all just guessing really. Apples to oranges, oranges to apples. And man do I want this team to win. I want Allen to succeed. But they gotta prove it. No rose colored glasses for me. That ship sailed 20 years ago.

And never let it be said I said it wasn't possible to win 10. Is certainly. I've been trained in the sciences. But of course, the sun might explode too.

I'll bank on dawn coming tomorrow...vbg.

It was very enjoyable sitting in the FIU stadium and watching the HOOSIERS get a W last night. Like so many have already pointed out, the IU defense did not pressure either FIU QB's last night at all. That was really disappointing. However, if I remember correctly, FIU had all of their O line back (and they were a bowl team last year) and that Jones kid of theirs is really, really good. I expect he will give their C-USA opponents fits all year. When putting those facts in perspective, along with IU playing something like 20+ new guys on D, I think it is possible the Hoosier defense can and will improve substantially by game two. I sure hope so because after making the 5 hour trip to Miami yesterday, I'm flying up to attend the Virginia game in B-town next weekend and want to see another IU win! Go HOOSIERS !!!

Allen stated that of the 3 times IU has now played FIU, last night's team was the best one they've faced. The Hoosiers played them better than the previous 2 times, as those games were in doubt until the end.

I don't understand the takes from many of you on last night's game. I saw a much improved and dynamic offense. I saw a defensive line that struggled at times, but an overall defense that can create turnovers. Most importantly, IU played almost every player that traveled with the team. I think I heard that 65% of the roster are Freshmen/Sophomores?

FIU was an 8 win team last year. Butch Davis can recruit and coach. It was an opener on the road and I felt the game was no longer in doubt by halftime. I believe, and this is just my opinion, FIU would beat Virginia at FIU. I believe IU will be 3-0 going into the home game vs MSU and is a 7 win team this year. I was very pleased with their perfomance last night.

Honest question. I haven't been a premium member for a couple of years, but does the premium page offer more rational and intelligent posts?

Some of this is brutal to read.

Thank you superstar84b for at least giving me one poster that makes any effing sense.

You guys do understand that many of the breakdowns behind the DL were guys not assignment sound? I’ve listened to several of you talk about Bryant Fitzgerald was going to waltz in due to his talent and dominate. He and all the other young guys were frequently out of position. So, I don’t buy that it’s simply talent. There are guys trying to adjust to assignment football. That needs to get a LOT better but don’t simply pass it off as they aren’t talented. The LB unit of Allen and Roof looks like they played a ton of snaps and they looked unsure most of the night.

I agree after watching the game a second time. The LBs speed was more a recognition, assignment and response lag rather than foot speed.

Yours is just an opinion...of absolutely no more value than anyone elses. And you apparently have misread many posts. You wont find a "better" person there than here. Just those actually crazy enough to pay for a web site...vbg

What an arrogant thing to post...
