I saw that Josh entered the portal effective today.

In another little tidbit, I saw that Purdue's best position player when it comes to batting average, Logan Sutter, had also entered the portal back on May 27th. He hovered at or near the top of the B1G in batting average. It's just a guess by me, but he is probably looking for a bump in NIL money from an ACC or SEC team where they probably give out more NIL money than what the B1G players get, considering the money they pump into their baseball programs.

That’s not terribly surprising as if he came back to IU there would be several young guys ahead and he’s gonna want playing time

He was probably told or already knew that Moore was entrenched at 3rd and he was not going to supplant him at that position.

I have really lost faith in this staff. If this really is the case, that he was told he would not get any playing time, it just verifies my lost faith. There is no way Josh is not good enough to be in the starting lineup on this team.....a team not good enough to make the tournament. And he is a hell of a defensive 3rd baseman. Sure, Will should be in the starting lineup, no doubt. But why is it either/or? You are telling me with a DH, and no Taylor nor Dickerson, there is no place for him? I would not be surprised at all if he goes to a better team and ends up having a great year. It reminds me of Bobby Whelan. Talk on here was the same, that he would not get playing time if he came back. And what happens? He goes to a MUCH better team in Virginia, that advanced to the college world series, and starts and bats .359. Perhaps Mercer will figure it out in year 8, because he certainly did not in year 7.

Yes. the big day has arrived with the portal window opening and the portal period will be June 2nd to July 1st for those who aren't affected by one of the exceptions like a coaching change.

It's the 2nd time Rushing has entered the portal (I believe) with him returning to the squad for this past season. Mercer was really high on him but he never really got established. Whether that's on him or on Glant's development skills remains to be seen.

Joey B leaving sucks, but it's not surprising
He spent almost the entire season on the bench before being a late game replacement or as a pinch hitter late in games, so it's no surprise that he is looking for greener pastures.

You can add Tyler Cerny to the list of players going into the portal. With his fielding, I don't know if they are going to knock the door down in bringing him in, but we shall see. Here's the updated list link thanks to iubase.com. Malamazian will continue to hold down the SS position and with Cerny and Oliver both in the portal, I'm not sure who will be at 2B as the main starter. AJ Shepard was hailed as a top recruit when IU brought him in and at the time, there was a chance he would go to the minor leagues and pass on IU's campus, but major injuries derailed his time at IU. I thought Swanson was out of eligibility after transferring to IU this season, but I guess not.

I do not understand what happened with Oliver. He was so good his freshman year once he had the chance. Thus year he did not hit at all.

Major shock. Purdue's Logan Sutter who was at or near the top of the B1G in batting average, and after auditioning with the Boilers this season, has ended up almost immediately in the SEC and at South Carolina. It would be interesting to know if there was some kind of third party tampering there, and just how much he was offered in NIL money which we will probably never know. Needless to say, it has no impact on us. That is the cynicism in me.

ADP gets win for Keene in NECBL last night with two innings of relief and 5 strikeouts….he always scared me coming but late this season he did improve and he has size/velo.

The portal has 2,533 players in it as I post this. The initial onslaught of players that entered it on June 2nd and 3rd has slowed quite a bit right now, with July 1st being the last date of the portal window with the exception of those who would qualify to continue to be in it because of coaching changes, etc. I've been keeping a close eye on any players in the portal that are transferring to IU but haven't seen any yet, and that will certainly change.

The added features of a 34 man roster, increased # of scholarships, and revenue sharing will make this an interesting season for portal players. Our guys who could better themselves will want secured landing spots.

I do hope if Mercer stays he will learn some lessons from this season and currently our most prominent portal participant.

Yes. He indicated he was coming to IU back on May 20th. He wasn't necessarily an oversight on my part since I was primarily looking at new commits that are coming out the portal window that started on June 2nd and so far there is nothing to report on those players so far. I should have been a little clearer when I said I didn't see any new players transferring out the portal. Thanks for bringing it up.

Right on. I wasn't viewing it as something you left out. Just trying to contribute. Appreciate all of your info.

In other B1G portal news, I saw that the Huskers had what they thought were three returning starters go into the portal with one of them almost immediately ending up with a SEC team. They came on strong at the end of the season to win the conference tournament and make it to the Field of 64.

Yep and Rutgers lost their top 3 arms as well.

Joey Brenczewski is trading tornadoes for hurricanes with his transfer to South Florida. South Florida is coached by Mitch Hannahs who was at Indiana State before being hired by USF this past season. Brenczewski had 38 appearances with 23 starts with most of the starts earlier in the season against nonconference foes or during midweek games. Several of his appearances were as a late game replacement or pinch hitter. He hit .297 in 91 at-bats with 3 homers and 24 RBIs.

Deron Swanson who arrived at IU as a transfer from Saint Francis (IN) this past season is transferring to Toledo which is close to his Ft. Wayne home. He had an ERA of 6.75 and a WHIP of 2.05 in 14.2 IP. He made seven appearances with four starts and had 16 K to 10 BBs and an OBA of .328.

There are 2767 players in the portal as I post this.

That’s a good deal for Joey, think he’ll do very well at South Florida. Probably a good spot for Swanson. I could see a lot of our portal guys landing in the MAC. Miami worked out well for Katskee and Appelwick.

It’s s still early and there could be more transfer out but with new guys and carry overs from the 25 roster there isn’t much room to add more guys. Did see IU Base has added a HS pitcher and a senior transfer relief pitcher to the fall player list.

Wiggins in portal as of today. Not terribly surprising as I think he was super highly touted but never really delivered for whatever reason. Change of venue might help him

Yes, I saw that. I thought he might enter it when the portal first opened, but after several days since it opened and no entry, I thought he might stick it out. He was a highly touted recruit coming out of high school and many thought he might skip the campus life for the minors, but he didn't have the impact we thought he would have. I assume he wasn't happy with his development under Mercer, and he won't last long in the portal due to his potential.

Wiggins hit .256 in 43 appearances with 37 starts. He had 12 extra base hits to include four homers and had 24 RBIs. Wiggins was good at drawing walks and had 38 BBs on the season and his OBP was .454.

Josh is going to Troy which may be an upgrade in program tbh. Good for him
Yeah, I saw that announcement today. Josh never really had a chance to get going this season and he appeared in just five games, all starts. He was 0 for 10 at the plate when he went out with the season-ending injury. As I pointed out earlier, he knew or probably knew he was not going to dislodge Moore from that 3B position.

So far, all of our freshmen position players that got extended playing time on the season have stood pat and seem to be returning for another season at IU, although the portal remains open until Jul 1st. I hope by even bringing this up, that I don't jinx that situation.

Tyler Cerny is off to south of the border at Kentucky. He appeared in 55 games with 54 starts at SS and 2B, and he hit .281. He had 26 extra base hits to include 10 homers on the season. He also had a knack for getting hit by pitches and reached 20 times on HBPs.

As we all know, Tyler had fielding problems throughout the season. He could make some absolutely incredible plays in the field and then turn around and blow routine balls for errors. He had 17 errors on the season and a fielding percentage of .927. After playing most of the season at SS, he ended up at 2B at the end of the season.

IMO, he might get drafted but his fielding problems might make MLB teams a little leery of using a draft pick on him.

Yeah two other pitchers one from Toledo and the other from Mizzou. So one position player (Crouse) and 4 pitchers so far
Loading up on pitchers is always a must. I would just like for us to finish in the upper half of the conference in team ERA for once since it seems we can't manage that of late. We improved of late in that category and ended up 10th with a team ERA of 5.61 overall which was our best ranking of the season in the B!G if my memory is correct. We finished 11th in conference games only with a team ERA of 6.35.

We have some promise with returning pitchers such as Vogel (draft eligible), Holderfield (draft eligible), Haas (draft eligible), Thomas, Yarberry, and Telfer to name some of the pitchers that we will have to mold into a staff along with the incoming freshmen and transfers. It's tough to try to come up with what would be a starting rotation next season right now, and summer ball along with the fall schedule will go a long way in giving us some semblance of what the rotation might be like, and we are going to see more transfers coming in before the dust settles on that.

Carl James has a good piece on iubase about the roster for next year and is about the most critical but fair assessment of pitching under Glant I’ve seen from them. Just posted today

Holderfield being among our bright spots tells me something. And it’s not good.

Tells me Glant has been rarely successful in developing recruited talent out of hs but he’s made up via portal. Still think he’s holding us back mostly and should be replaced

They do a really good job of covering IU baseball. BTW, that is a very good article and assessment of where IU stands going into the off-season. There will be a lot of question marks, especially with the pitching staff.

RHP Trey Telfer entered the portal today. He's a kid out of San Diego, CA, so I don't know if he wants to get closer to home or there was an issue of not seeing the mound much or his development. He appeared in nine games, all out of the bullpen, and had a decent ERA of 4.15 with a WHIP of 1.85 in 8.2 IP. He had 7 Ks to 7 BBs and an OBA of .265.
