Nick Saban with an interesting comment.
“Gotta be careful with the portal…those guys are in the portal for a reason”

Well of course coaches need to be careful with the portal. Coaches also need to be careful with high school kids, especially poorly ranked ones.

The portal has been around for a while. Teams have been able to successfully use it, though of course there are no guarantees.

There is nothing wrong with players who improve moving to better programs/situations. Professionals do this in every industry.

Yes but his reasoning was that players are either leaving for business or leaving because they are not a fit. FSU was the school he mentioned when going out and buying a player in the portal and it doesn’t work.

We wouldn’t have a football team without the modern portal. Saban didn’t need the portal. The portal hurt Saban.
Different scenario when coach brings a bunch of players from his program. It can work but when you are using the portal to get the high priced guys, it’s risky for team culture.

Or a player improved and they can go play at bigger/better program. There are good reasons to transfer.

He’s a bit off. It’s always a business decision. Ultimate goal is the league. If you are a guy that isn’t going to get to the league where you are at you play the long game. Then if you are a guy betting on himself then you transfer. He’s just mad because he couldn’t outbid. Notice when he couldn’t stack talent he wasn’t as good.

Not sure I agree.. like Goode and Hatton didn’t transfer for a business decision. How many guys transfer for lack of playing time or even asked to leave.

Yep. And it’s also a business decision when they commit as a high schooler.

Goode did too. He wanted Kelly school. You think Hatton gets the same job opportunities at his last school? Miller Kopp interviewed Brian Walsh and they touched on this. They are selling the long game also. You are missing many aspects of coming to IU. You ever wonder why Kopp is everything Hoosier and not everything wildcat? He knew the opportunity is bigger than other places.

"You are missing many aspects of coming to IU.".... of course... He never attended IU

Possibly but don’t you think the best coach of all time probably knows what he is talking about?
Saban is the greatest CFB coach of all time but he is pissed that teams can now legally spend more on players than he did when he cheated like a mofo.
I loved it when he complained about Jimbo Fisher buying players (legally) and then Jimbo called out Saban saying he had been an assistant at Bama and knew what had gone on there for years. Saban never said another word about the A&M program….LOL

Yes. We're all aware that purdoo doesn't care for the portal. We've heard you and the other broilers talk about it before.

One issue is that a kid who doesn't get playing time or doesn't want to go through the hard process of becoming a good to great player can just quit and go into the portal.
why would that bother you, that's like saying you would be against a Christian savior who quit on 2 previous marriages and just moved on to a younger model.

This past season I kept my eye on fr-jr players that I thought would be good for IU in the portal. That's new. It adds a little twist to things.

Right now we're a high 4☆, spring holdout, heavy portal kinda school. After this season we could potentially flip a commit, get a late 5☆,,,,etc. I think that's highly more likely than we limp into the tournament.

We'll probably need 5-6 players every year.
