Payne Asks for release and gets it

The "nolovelost" hashtag is fairly shitty of him to say. Stings a little less with all of the transfers coming in although I strongly prefer to build from the ground up vs. trying to do it with transfers.

All in all, good on IU for granting the release vs. keeping an unhappy kid in the room. Negativity is poison on a team and keeping him locked in somewhere he didn't want to be would be bad.

And the hits keep on coming. Do we expect any more releases?

Unless he and the new RB coach just did not get on in their conversations, I struggle to understand this one.

The RB room figures to be pretty much wide open for this year, and I find it hard to believe there are many schools, especially at the P5 level, who still have room for a 2022 recruit with both signing days already having past, and most of them having been working the transfer portal for quite a while now.

I also prefer to build the roster from the ground up, only using the portal to patch holes. I hope we don't become so dependent on the portal because those transfers are unreliable. Just look at Handy. 4* SEC transfer....zero sacks.... dismissed.

Maybe Payne didn't think his running style fit with our new offense or was just so attached to McCullough that he was out when he left for ND.

Per his Twitter account

Well this hurts, sucks but what should we expect it’s IU football
Kinda of sensed that coming...

Hard to say for sure (I mean the guy might turn out to be a HoF somewhere) but at face value I see this as only a positive..., as in one more scholarship available and dodging a potential locker room cancer before it arrives...

I don’t blame him. He wants a crack at becoming an NFL running back and some key pieces have changed. This sort of thing is an effect of staff turnover. Things will stabilize at some point. The best thing for IU is to let the young man go. If he and the staff mutually agree that this is the place, he’ll be back. I wish him well.

I have no doubt he knows what his new address is.

I hate to see him go but I am not surprised as he was a late pickup by McCollough. It is better to let one go rather than have one that doubts he made the right decision.

Have no idea what his family situation is, but it might be worth looking to see if they have a sudden change of lifestyle with new cars, and new House as if they just won the lottery. You hate to think about it, but this stuff may go on behind the scenes.

Given the new rules, there probably isn't much reason to go behind the scenes.

Wonder if staff will go after another RB now. We still have quite a few RBs so may be fine on depth anyway.

Is the portal any more unreliable than HS seniors?
It isn't like we have not had problems with kids that came straight here out of HS.
The biggest thing is for the guys recruiting to have a sixth sense with regards to character.

Anyone who watches his Sophomore year film can see that he's a special talent, but his film in his final two seasons was underwhelming and his injury history concerned me. Don't get me wrong, it's a loss, but if I had to pick any of our four star commits to lose, he would probably be the guy.

I really can't blame him, the guy who recruits you pretends to be all in and leaves a month after you sign with his school, ntm IUFB's O-line struggles being a concern for any running back with NFL aspirations. As much as I still find it bizarre for a kid to hit the portal/decommit this early in his career, given the circumstances it makes sense for both sides to allow him Gi'bran to leave immediately. Good luck to him!

The concerning part to me is the precedence it sets with any incoming recruit. What if a bulk of the entire class decided they wanted to decommit due to a coach departure? What can you say to stop it now that you released this guy? Are we really better off flushing every player who has a momentary fear of a change because we fear them being disgruntled will be a cancer on our team, or do you tell them to suck it up for a year and if they still want to leave after the season they can use the transfer portal? I have concerns about releasing a player from his LOI without a head coaching change. With how many position coaches we have lost it feels like it would be a big hit to approve LOI releases for every incoming player impacted by a change in their position coach. How many players are going to read that headline and wonder “why didn’t I think of requesting a release when the guy who recruited me left”? I just hope this doesn’t open the door for more releases. This would just continue to add to pessimism created by some of the coaching changes or lack there of.

But this isn't precedential, is it?

We're better off without him... You don't want guys who don't want to be here... They're nothing but trouble and can trash a whole locker room...

Dont think they can. IU is maxed out and I believe once someone signs a NOI they are locked in as an "initial counter." This year the limit is 32 with the bonus transfers and they are there. So unless it is a blue shirt or green shirt IU is SOL.

What happened to the good old days of recruiting when Kentucky Basketball sent packages of currency to parents and relatives of recruits, and only got caught when a package busted open at a UPS Facility.

Yea!!... I yearn to go back to the days when Louisville assistant coaches would buy hookers for recruits to "dance" with at dorm parties!... I mean, what's a better way to start getting them prepared for the NBA! ... :).

NIL is legal. We need to start coming up with some $ for recruits. During the big ten final last Sunday, I heard the announcer state that Caitlin Clark (Iowa ladies basketball player and some feel the best player in college) had an NIL at just over 1 million.

Screw him if he didn't want to honor is commitment. I'm sure it had a lot to do with DMac leaving for ND. I'm sure ND will be calling if they hadn't before he backed out. I say build via the portal...MSU found some good backs that way. It's just a different climate these days. When does the NCAA go back to the "sit one" year on transfers?

Caitlin Clark and another player are spokespersons for an H&R Block deal that gives 1M total for all sponsorships for female college athletes. She was not paid 1M

I missed that hashtag. Little prick.

I am trying to balance my thinking on this issue. You are dealing with a Group of immature 18 Year Olds Who are living away from Home for the first time - a tough time for all of Us, Athlete or not. 2 Months after You get there the person Who was Your Primary Recruiter and part of your support structure moves on to another School. Traumatic, disruptive, and confusing. I get that.

But if You were talented enough to be there as a Scholarship Athlete up to this point, what has changed to make You think You are no longer good enough or welcome. Life throws Us a curve every now and then and We need to be able to cope. If this Kid graduates 4 Years from now, interviews for a job with ABC Company, gets the job and his boss and primary recruiter moves on to another position in the Company or to a job with another Company, what do You do? Maybe your former Boss makes it possible for You to follow Him to the new position or Company. If not, You just can't pick up Your Ball and go Home and look for a set of circumstances You approve. You have rent to pay, groceries to buy, a Car payment to make and gas ton buy for the Car. You can't walk away from those responsibilities.

The kid was already pissed that McCollough bolted, but I keep looking at that comment about “communication”……I wonder if he felt deceived by DMC or maybe Allen (or both?) and didn’t like the communication about the departure? Regardless, you don’t hold onto a guy like that, as others have said, by denying his request. That is like stirring up a hornets nest of ill will, negativity, and bad vibes while building a team.
If this had been a 5-star OL……well….let’s have a revisit on that 😆

I think that's the sort of thing that happens when you have turnover at the coach/recruiter level. Maybe they didn't communicate a ton with him after the changes were made and he wasn't getting the one on one time he got prior? Could be just as simple as the guy who has been telling you how bad he wanted you on the team, what his plans were for you, what you need to work on is suddenly gone and you aren't getting that kind of feedback anymore.
