Paris Games Opening Ceremony

Agree it was not enjoyable, but still a weird thing for people to get their panties in a twist over. Some groups seems to get off on feeling aggrieved.
Some are offended by the “show”. Some are offenders that the others are offended. WGAFF???

it was a decay of basic humanity. I’m not Christian, but I can’t comment of if they should or shouldn’t be offended.

That’s not proof of your claim that it was just some dudes in France saying this. Try again.
OK, how about considering an interview with the artistic director of the opening ceremony and listening to his explanation about what it was about? If that doesn't wrap things up, I am not sure what would.

Thomas Jolly, the artistic director of the 2024 Olympics opening ceremony, has denied a controversial scene featuring drag queens was inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper.

Jolly told news channel BFMTV on Sunday that the tableau has nothing to do with the iconic Renaissance painting depicting Jesus’s last meal with the 12 apostles as he tells them that one of their number will betray him.

“Dionysus arrives at the table because he is the Greek God of celebration and that sequence is called ‘festivity,’” Jolly said.

“The God of wine, which is also a French jewel and father of Sequana, the Goddess linked to the River Seine. The idea was to create a big pagan party in link with the God of Mount Olympus — and you will never find in me, or in my work, any desire of mocking anyone.”

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, the official Olympics account said the “interpretation of the Greek God Dionysus makes us aware of the absurdity of violence between human beings.

Of course that’s what they say NOW.

At any rate, I don’t care enough about this to continue arguing about it.

You never did explain how the gluttonous blue guy fits into the last supper story

Nobody ever claimed it was a reenactment of the Last Supper. That is a lie. What almost everyone who has seen it has said, including possibly 50 news websites and tens of thousands of individuals, is that it was a parody of the Last Supper. We've all seen photos of the scene next to the photos of the LS. I've quoted the producers of the show to the effect that it was a parody of the LS, but they did not think it would offend. See posts 69 & 76. The 'star' of the scene said it was :"the new Gay Testament". No one has said Dionysus, the fat chick, and the drag queens belong in a depiction of the LS. As I said in post 24, the scene was "staged as a takeoff of the Last Supper". That is obvious simply from viewing the scenes together. I quote myself and others because I know you will otherwise lie about what has been said. It's what you do.

As to the 'director', he also has said the following: "(W)e have freedom of creation, artistic freedom...we have the right not to be worshippers, we have a lot of rights in France, and this is what I wanted to convey". By "this", he may have meant artistic freedom, or diversity, it's not entirely clear. He knew what he was doing. He simply did not find it offensive, and naively thought others would agree.

Jesus loves all, including queers, drag queens, and fat chicks.

Jolly and France had one thing to do: pull off a ceremony that celebrated sports and world unity through Olympic competition. The shit he threw up there had zero to do with a celebration of sports. What was with the stupid scene he had with two guys and a kid looking alluringly into the camera with the implied message that “we’re about to get it on” and shutting the door behind them. They called this about “inclusion.” Why make everything about sex?
Jolly and the LGBTQ community there f@&$ed up big time. Instead of using the drag queens to celebrate sports, they turned in into some bizarre homage to weirdness.
If they wanted inclusivity, why not bring out some pedophiles to perform sex acts on minors right on stage? They’re people too, right? And, we need to respect their values, even if we don’t agree with them.

I'm surprised that there's been nothing on here concerning the mocking of the Last Supper during the opening ceremony. And the image of the ghostly rider on a pale horse, bringing to mind Revelation 6:8. Very 1793ish. Is this just to be expected of the French?

Who says politics and religion don't mix?

Kudos to the GOP/conservatives to use the Olympic opening ceremony to link themselves with a defense of Christianity.

For a bonus some posters also took a swipe at France and Europe while reminding us about the link between liberals and socialism.

USA, USA...

So there were some chants of "Heil Hitler" coming from a small number of spectators during the Israeli national anthem....as they waved the Palestinian flag.

It got me to thinking: it's not the first time that chant has been shouted in Paris. It probably isn't fair to dump on Paris or France about that, really. From my perspective, the French government and the IOC have stood pretty firm on welcoming the Israelis.

You can't celebrate French culture without depicting a love of fine art. Unfortunately, there's lots of people without the first clue about art history, people who don't even know about the voluminous fine art covering the feast of Dionysus and other feasts of Greek debauchery, art that predates the famous gay / bi painter Da Vinci. Art that Da Vinci likely emulated in his work.

These offended, clueless, outraged dumbasses won't take the word of
1) the person who wrote the show;
2) the person who produced and directed it;
3) the actors who participated;
4) anyone who knows ANYTHING about art history and recognized the connection, instantly, with no doubt (I have to admit, I'm no art expert, but my wife studied art history in college and remarked in real time about it depicting the feast of Dionysus).
Can’t help it if you have a fantasy about the blue guy with his nutsack hanging out. That’s on you.

There is a difference between fine art and a bearded guy with tits parading around in lingerie. What does any of what they did have to do with Olympic sporting events?
France had one opportunity on a world stage to honor the Olympics and they f@&$ed up royally.

If it wasn’t for the U.S. saving their ass 80 years ago, France and it’s collaborative Vichy pussies would still be on their knees before Nazi Germany.

Oh yes French culture from the board’s clown who finds racism everywhere celebrating French culture. Hilarious. A country where professional matches are shut down bc of racism and homophobic chants. Where fans bring bananas and make monkey sounds when the black players get the ball.

I don't think you're really this stupid, but perhaps you are. Obviously, you constantly lie and misrepresent. Not a good look, Mr. Scientist.

The director states "We have the right not to be worshippers". What does that have to do with anything, in this context? Who are the worshippers to whom he refers? I can only think of one group. Who are they worshipping?

That's his depiction of his "love of fine art"? I'll grant you that he did a pretty good job of presenting debauchery. He worships it. Maybe you do as well. The only issue is he chose to do so right on top of iconic Christian tradition. Anything goes in his world.

Only a weird freak would have enjoyed that embarrassment

Yeah, I haven’t allowed other people to offend me with religious mockery for a long time. So that wasn’t my first thought when I saw this (although it’s almost certainly true, as many have charged, that they’d never have dared to do something like this with Islamic symbology).

I just thought that about 80% of the opening ceremony was absurd and embarrassing for France.

I'm going with ignore. There's worthwhile discussion that happens here -- but there have just always been people who are intent on trying to do nothing but pee in the punchbowl. What's the point in attacking them?
Personal satisfaction and gratification? Crazed what do you do for a living? Generally? I’m curious how you are able to pull historical info off the top of your head re old justices and shit. Do you not watch reality tv? Second division euro soccer?

What...you don't take me for a reality TV fan? LOL.

Yeah, I filed for divorce from vapid popular culture decades ago. So when people talk about these shows, movies, music, the Kardashians, YouTubers, TikTokers, and influencers, etc. etc., I'm very proud to say that I'm entirely ignorant of it all and intend to stay that way.

Soooo, one could say you take everything in that universe with a heavy dose of insouciance?

Not Listening Dumb And Dumber GIF

It's not on this list from 12 years ago, but I also remember a Last Supper parody during "History of the World Part 1."

But this is definitely the MOST worked up I've ever seen people about a LS send up.
