Parallels between Ancient Rome and Western Powers?

Unrolled thread:

Hardly breaking news but I'll say it anyway - - - kids are expensive. It costs north of $325k to raise a kid to age 18. That's before college.

Prices will begin to fall on Day 1 (January 20), though, so expect fertility rates to start increasing in a couple of weeks.

Well, it wasn't because of birth control.

Probably had more to do with slaughter after being overrun multiple times and people heading for the hills when Rome was no longer safe.

We have the opposite problem today - everybody's coming here!

Probably both. If you don't produce enought sons for your army.........someday you won't have no army to defend Rome.

But yeah, the number of factors beyond population decline that contributed to Rome's decline has been written about for centuries. But, it's part of it espeically once the fighting started.

No greater motivator to earn more money than having to provide for a wife and children.

The problem is too many people penny pinching and falling into analysis paralysis like you did above. When what they should be doing is taking the leap because it’s the most important and rewarding thing they’ll ever do.

Unfortunately, Trump won't be able to make prices fall Day 1. He can however develop a SBR and take the first step towards American being on the Bitcoin Standard, which will eventually lower prices. @Bulk VanderHuge never miss an opportunity to tell the world about the beauties of Bitcoin.

Did you even read the thread?

The heavy amounts of lead in Roman water wasn't helpful either.

I hadn't heard of it. Certainly caused issues, but doesn't sound like most scientists think it was to the level of toxicity?

Are we certain it is an economic issue? Seems like cultural changes have a significant impact too. I don't know how you attribute cause for the effects, but it's not simply about money.

Here's an interesting exchange re: Rome:

I think a comparison between Rome and Russia is more appropros.

The US has people literally dying to come to America. Russia, not so much.

There are many parallels that can be drawn between Rom and the US, but I don't think shrinking population is one.

I agree it's expensive but I think a lot of parents make it a lot more expensive because they think their kid(s) has to have everything.
Yes. Too many shitty parents. Too many irresponsible parents. Too many people having kids who shouldn't be having kids. Too many deadbeat dads. Too many broken homes. Too many kids living with just one parent. Etc.

I read the exchange. Tough for me to take anyone seriously who talks about problems being "exasperated."

Oh, oh, I bet I know the answer!

Would have been better served with a classic...

Well, yeah, but the empire had moved the capital and all that admin function to Constantinople and then in 476 Rome was sacked by the Germanic tribes. So of course their population fell in those 200 years.

And the Eastern empire limped along until 1453.

Also, the Germanic tribes didn't just save and rebuild the empire, but also founded the feudal system that would govern western Europe for another 1000 years. That's how we got, you know, f*cking CHARLEMAGNE.

I honestly can't figure out what the point of this thread is about, unless it's simply that people bring genes and sperm from outside your tiny neighborhood is somehow a threat to the existence of your society.

Blame the feminist movement for a lot of it.

How about WWII which saw women leaving their homes each day to take jobs in an effort to help us win the war?

Next they worked in order for the family to pay their bills.

Now a good many prefer work to getting married and raising a family.

The feminist movement included equal pay. How dare they.

Great series of episodes about the first Frankish kings that culiminated in Charlemagne on the Rest Is History that just came out.

This comparison is stupid beyond comprehension, although no one in this thread has yet been able to land on why it's stupid.
It seems people have identified a lot of reasons besides birth rates for Rome's population collapse. As for the comparison, I see two issues. 1) Rome was/is a city, not a country.

2) Rome had a birth rate issue and failed. We have a birthrate issue; therefore, we will fail. It’s flawed logic.

What's the obvious one that we missed?

Rome promoted the GAY life style. That was their downfall.
