OT: Dantonio

Yeah. ESPN took a hard left leaning turn and it happened over night. When I was a kid, I don’t remember this kind of left leaning. ESPN used to be enjoyable and the worldwide leader in Sports. No clue what happened.

Anyway, I agree that it’s good to be skeptical. I think that D’Antonio stays because he’s persuaded that base. My thinking that has nothing to do with my own personal or moral views, but he killed the press conference. The fans ate it all up. So we don’t know if he should or shouldn’t be the coach, and ESPN has suspect agendas these days, but I think he remains the coach
Agenda for what? There are many, many accusers. This goes back to, what, 2010 in the AD? I’m supposed to be skeptical of accusers but give Dantonio the benefit of the doubt? What, specifically, has ESPN reported that is an issue to you? What is left leaning about this? There’s a rampant culture of covering up assault.

I agree with you. I didn’t get the impression that anyone is calling them “fake news.” They have had a left leaning bias though, so I wouldn’t make them my only source. Now D’antonio Basically called them fake news lol, which is one reason why I gave him the trump persuasion comparison. But on the flip side, I wouldn’t take everything ESPN at face value. I think that it’s reasonable to also use other sources/logic and to not invest to heavily in one source (like ESPN), or one point of view.[/QUOTE]
What is left or right about this? It’s assault.

TOTALLY agree with you in that they should get their day in court when it comes to legal proceedings, guilt and innocence, but that is not and should not be the case in regards to the matter of whether they keep their high paid jobs. Even if they did nothing technically illegal, the culture they set up could very well be grounds for dismissal.

Of course, at this time, who is going to fire them? The AD and the Pres are gone.
Yeah there’s a difference between legal guilt or innocence and bringing damage to your employer. They should be gone simply for the accusations.

I agree that you should be skeptical for D’Antonio. I never said you shouldn’t be. I think that it’s also reasonable to be skeptical of any news story, look out at multiple sources, and let the accussed also have their day.

D’Antonio for example flat out lied. He said in April of 2017 that the rapes and assaults that occurred in March/April of 2017 were the first since he had been at MSU, but then yesterday said “well I reported every incident in the article to the proper authorities.” Obviously every incident dates back further than 2017, showing that he lied in April. So I’m anything but a D’Antonio supporter. On the flip side, I’m not going to just believe everything that ESPN says unless it’s backed up as well. Usually these processes take a while to play out.

The one thing that I do know that is unrelated to my moral views is that D’Antonio will remain the football coach. Morally, id like an unbiased investigation, and like many, I err on the side that the accusations and volume of accusations are enough to bring his job into question. On the flip side, I know that we live in a world where facts don’t matter, but how someone presents themselves matter. For example, I understood why the Minnesota football players protested last year in regards to a sexual assault case. They were cleared in the legal system after a detailed investigation, and they didn’t feel as if additional players should’ve then been added to the schools investigation. They felt as if it was biased (it was) and boycotted. But then enter Tracy Claeys. He can’t speak very well, is a bad leader, and is obese. I feel bad saying it, but every way that he presented himself made him someone who was an easy target to fire, although from a logical perspective they had a legit argument that should’ve at least been heard. Now D’Antonio on the flip side is the opposite of Claeys. He’s got some level of charisma, strong personality, and leadership qualities. That’s why he was proactive and set up a presser, was emphatic and appealed to emotion, and “looked people in the eye”. It’s no surprise that whereas Minnesota fans were the ones who called for Claeys to be fired, Michigan State fans called for D’Antonio to be promoted to AD or school president. The facts and logical realities were on Claeys side, the charisma and leadership qualities are on D’Antonios side. In a world where facts don’t matter, especially in college sports, D’Antonio will keep his job and Claeys will never be a division 1 head coach again.

Again its accusations of assault. If in fact its true let em hang. Also again terminated for accusations is not a responsible decision. Suspended indefinitely without pay until the matter is resolved should be a consideration.

You ever watch an old western where someone yells hang em and whether or not they are innocent or guilty people get all fired up and are ready to string em up. Well in this day and age its not just the small town screaming its the whole planet.

If that was covered up then they should all pay dearly. But until all the facts are presented we dont know what really happened.

Not a thing will happen to these two coaches. We’ve been through this before with Penn State, which involved young children, and that institution is fully functioning and its cash cow is at an all-time high. The NCAA even saw fit to reduce the penalties. Dantonio and Izzo are fully protected. Hollis has exited. It was on his watch as the top guy and this will blow away within a few months, as wrong as that may seem.

You are probably correct. They probably will get off with an admonishment.

Things are getting a little warmer for them however. Thes a Special Prosecutor involved but depending on how the outcome effects MI politics..., it may turn out to be just another white wash...

D’Antonio has fan support and their fan base believes its a witch hunt. Even the two cases from last year could very well prove those players innocent. Appearently there’s a video of the players from the January 2017 incident having consensual sex with the accuser. They’ve even been granted the ability to go to juco schools, which a judge wouldn’t have granted if the players were deemed to be a risk.

Even with the players being kicked off of the team by D’Antonio, there was also an outside independent investigation, and they found that D’Antonio handled the case well and promptly from January 2017 and the other case in April 2017. He gave a “strong” press conference yesterday which gained fan “support”, To go along with these details. Each case was presented to the proper authorities. If anything he will publicly appear to be tough on assault IF these players are actually cleared in court, which they believe is likely in the case of the three from January, but the case from April is unclear. The reason why I mention these facts isn’t because I think D’Antonio “should” keep his job. He’s dishonest and openly lied to the public about January 2017 being the first incident. That’s a fireable offense alone, and shows that previous incidents were indeed likely covered up. But these additional details will give him more fan support since he was cleared by a third party. They’re reaching for any reason to keep that man. At penn state, the staff was slowly fired and even their fans couldn’t support that. Statues fell. D’Antonio is a completely different animal though. I don’t think that comparing him to trump is a far stretch, and he may even believe his own BS at this point. Due to those factor, and being cleared by a third party law firm, he’s going to coach that team in 2018. And that doesn’t make MSU fans terrible people. When you have a mass manipulator, people tend to follow. That’s D’Antonio for you.

It's amazing to me how anyone up there can ignore Dantonio's continued recruitment of the DE from Ft Wayne who was already in trouble for not one but two assaults in high school...

The guy went on to rape a girl while under Dantonio's direct supervision ...

Crickets up there... Not a peep about his removal... The guy is completely Teflon up there. Nothing sticks... He's Paterno part two. Don't be surprised if they erect a statue for him too...

These two coaches are too big and bring way too much attraction to the conference on the playing fields to have anything happen whatsoever in this. The BTN loves them.

They are already filming future episodes for “Green and White Days.”

People need to understand that NOTHING ever happens to successful programs. Ever. The only programs that ever get decimated by scandals are little guys. This has actually had the opposite effect: MSU now has a bigger chip on their shoulder. Those programs won’t tuck tail and hide. They’ll thrive. Somebody just poked the bear here.

I don't know that they'll thrive on the short term but being the cynical old guy I've become (for good reason), I hate to say you are probably correct and they most likely will survive and eventually continue to thrive... Sad...

Cover ups like these ought to result in lost jobs at their level at minimum..,

I disagree with this view. Plenty of money making programs have fallen. The difference and key is always is the leader a good manipulator or not. As a thought experiment, imagine MSU football the way it is today. Everything is the same in terms of wins, revenues and popularity. Imagine the only difference is the strange and awkward Tracy Claeys is the head coach, and not D’Antonio who can lie and manipulate people. You better believe that Claeys would’ve been gone. It’s not just that the program makes money, but it’s who the leader is. The fans need someone who can confirm their bias that their program is beyond reproach. Without that kind of leader, it doesn’t matter. I’m pretty sure Claeys was 9-4 and trending upward when he got fired, but the difference was his personality. The fans aren’t these heartless vultures who are just out for wins, but they’re also being manipulated, which was the point of that press conference from D’Antonio.

Turns out the fix already appears to be in: The special prosecutor or whatever they are calling him up there is a good pal of Dantonio who was already aware of what had been going on at MSU (at least in regard to the football team).

With that guy in charge of the whitewash things will be summed up in a tidy fashion fairly rapidly with Dantonio exonerated ... The Big Ten offices will breathe a collective sigh of relief and the Big green cash machine will go rolling on as usual...
