Had an uncle there who had to run things as a Sgt. after his entire command element was wiped out... He was awarded the Bronze Star with a Combat V for his actions.

Never heard any details from him when he was alive. Like my father and all our other friends and family members who saw significant combat all I could get from them as a kid was: "It was rough"... Learned most of my uncles story at his funeral from his medals and ribbons citations along with details from family...

He ended up being severely wounded and was listed as Missing In Action. His wife thought he was dead after several months of waiting for word after that initial telegram...

He finally was able to get word of his survival back home after reaching a hospital in Britain.. He'd made it there after being moved by hand, by stretcher, by Jeep, by train car, and by ship (to England)...

Not a one hit wonder, he went on to switch Services and serve in the Marine Corp Reserve, once again reaching the rank of Sgt...

R.I.P. Uncle

May our country continue to remember what you and your friends did over there..., and why it was important that you did it...

I had an uncle who got a purple heart for his injuries there. 3 of my uncles received purple hearts. My Dad served in the Pacific but wasn’t injured. Two of my aunts were nurses. All are gone now. The last was an aunt who passed away last week at 101.

My great uncle (grandmother’s brother), was shot In the leg during that battle. Luckily survived and lived another 50+ years, despite needing a cane for most of his life. Never once heard him complain or fuss about it.

Tough as nails. Smoked like a chimney (pipe mostly).
