I know two things: If you are Kevin Wilson at Indiana University, you WILL play your third string QB on meaningful downs in important games and you are limited by rule as to how many hours you can practice each week. So, why not divide up your practices? Have your first stringer practice from, say, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., your second stringers practice from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and your third stringers practice from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.? You could have the same script and schedule for each practice. That way, your third string QB would get the same number of reps as your first string QB. Would that help prepare this man for his seemingly inevitable important playing time?

Does everyone else (the O line, backs, receivers, defense) get to practice three times the allowable limit? Please tell me you were joking with your post.

No, no! No one would practice three times the allowable limit. Everyone would practice the same amount of time. I'm just trying to think of ways to get third stringers the same number of reps as first stringers get, that's all. Trying to think outside that proverbial box.

Reps only matter if it's with the #1 offense. Every quarterback can throw and study, but reps need to be with the first unit.

Just out of curiosity, have you heard of the scout team that has to simulate our opponents? How many guys do you think we have?

Yeah, I thought of that, myself and I admit I don't have an answer unless you an bring in some guys to be a permanent scouting team. I also admit I don't know if that's against the rules, but if I were a betting man, I'd bet that it is otherwise, the Big Boys (the Alabamas, the O$Us, the Michigans, the USCs, etc.) of the college football world would be doing it. So, no, I don't have an answer to that. In my defense, at least that didn't keep me from asking the question! :) )

1. Coaches have limited time. When are they going to recruit, break down film, game plan if they are on the field for 6 hours a day. There is simply not enough time.

2. Teams typically carry 100-115 players. So if you lucky with 3 groups you would have 30 per practice. So half the time they would waste their time playing scout team. Do you really want you starters playing scout team? Are you six deep in case a player gets hurt.

3. When do you have meetings? Most have pre practice meetings. So likely you are having meetings from 11-12.

4. When do players schedule classes? With this schedule players essentially couldn't have any classes from 11 am to 8 pm. They cant plan ahead and schedule classes based on what team they are on.

5. How do you practice special teams? They are often made up of starters and back ups.

6. How do you try different combinations? You can't get a guy first team reps to see if he fit better.

Fair points, all. So, I guess there is no way to give your third string QB more reps. :-(
