Primaries were held in PA and KY and Jacksonville FL elected a new Mayor. The Dem won a Special Election for a PA state house seat in the Philly burbs which focused on abortion rights. The win solidifies Dem control of the PA House, for the first time in decades and provides a check on the control the GOP had previously enjoyed in the PA Legislature. Turnout was light in both PA and also in KY, where the Pubs held their Primary to see who will challenge Beshear for Gov in the fall.
Some are characterizing it as a Trump/DeSantis battle with the Trump endorsed Cameron cruising to victory. However I don't think you can read much into those results, as Mitch backed Cameron as well and he's popular with KY Pubs. DeSantis only endorsed the challenger (Craft) on election day, and Craft who actually served as UN Ambassador under Trump was also endorsed by Pompeo, swarmy Ted Cruz and that unknown Vivek guy who is running (for POTUS) as well.So probably not fair to hang this Craft loss on DeSantis...
However, huge loss for DeSantis in FL where his hand picked candidate for Mayor of Jacksonville (Davis) lost to Donna Deegan, giving Jacksonville it's first Dem Mayor in 30 yrs and first woman chief executive ever. DeSantis won Duvall Co by 12 points in Nov. But in a race with heavy turnout (33%) with more GOP voters (99,000) turning out than Dems (92,000) Deegan prevailed in a huge upset. The race was likely decided by the 25,000 voters who were non-affiliated, which could indicate that DeSantis's political pull within the state is not quite as strong as many believe.
Got to be a somewhat embarrassing loss for Ron ,esp in light of his speech in Iowa where he characterized himself as a winner and bragged about his "achievements" in FL. As some of us have mentioned before, Jacksonville appears at the top of the listing (Red State murder problem) released by Third Rate which argued that murder rates are higher in Trump voting states.
Now some have tried to blame the high murder rates in Red states on "blue cities" within those states. But Jacksonville is the most crime riddled city in FL and was (at least up until yesterday) under long time GOP control. It's politics are similar to Bakersfield, which again has a higer per capita murder rate than either LA or SF or a state like OK which makes the list and where the two most crime ridden cities (Tulsa and Ok City) both have GOP Mayors.
All of this is noteworthy because in the Jacksonville Mayoral race the primary issue was crime. Deegan also attacked the state's (DeSantis) political cronyism, and effectively tied Davis and DeSantis to each other.Davis was groomed by DeSantis to basically succeed the current Mayor (Lenny Curry) who has been in office since 2015, and Davis is still likely in shock that he lost. He approached the race as if it was his coronation, esp with Ron's endorsement. Looks like that strategy didn't fly with Independents...
