Not Sustainable?

B1G announcers continue with the old saw that Indiana's use of the portal is not sustainable but Nebraska & MSU, etc. will in the long run do better than IU. Sound familiar to you all? Seems like a lot of bias by the TV crews.
They’re not entirely wrong. You can’t rebuild your roster every year with G5 gems. You’re gonna have misses. Just like with any other recruiting.

Where they’re wrong is that they don’t seem to appreciate that a big chunk of rosters everywhere are going to be 1 yr transfers any more.

I don’t follow this argument either. I don’t see the difference between us and those other schools, we both face the risk of recruits working or not working. /shrug

I think coach CIG knows your foundation is going to be high school recruits. But until those guys are ready you supplement with transfers.

This season is an anomaly in that the team was built with that many transfers. Those transfers are here because they followed their coach. I think Cig will still use the portal but high school recruits will be the core of his future teams.

I was on the Rivals football board and a lot of folks think IU will be a 4-5 game winner in a few years. They gave examples of non traditional powers who rose up for a short time, like Kansas several years ago, and I reminded them that it was before the portal. As Urban Meyer has said, Cig takes good players and makes them play great. He can always find good players, who have produced at another school, in the portal..

Frankly, I don’t think what he’s done has ever been done before so you can’t say it’s not sustainable. He seems to think it is and his record speaks for itself. The guy wins.

The media and other fan bases refuse to give IU any credit, outside of a couple announcers.
Pretty sure Cig knows whst he’s doing.
He had no other choice this year.
Next year will probably be another year of numerous transfers.
After that he will have established recruiting ties in the state and Midwest.
I don’t care what the schedule was this year, what he has done in year one is pretty incredible.

But a bunch will be returning. He will fill in as needed. Rourke was new to his system. Sig has a plan and is recruiting pretty well so far. He likes to develop talent.

First they were all saying you better enjoy it because he will be gone at the end of thei year.
Now that he signed the extension they say it’s not sustainable.
One excuse after another instead of giving us an ounce of credit, screw em.
There are situations that in hindsight you should’ve seen it coming, but with CCC he doesn’t really have any red flags in his coaching history that would lead you to believe he can’t keep IU a winner. And frankly, with the resources of a B10 school and the prestige of the B10 conference, it should be possible for this program with a coach like him to win big. Good recruits are going to want to come and plenty of good portal players will want to be a part of this situation to finish out their career. If you’re going to gamble on a coach and a situation, this is the one to do it on.

Next year we return 3 starting offensive lineman, potentially our top 2 receivers, two running backs that have looked good in limited time on offense. On D we bring back the bulk of our defensive backfield, our stud linebacker, and potentially our best pass rusher. The needs are far less plentiful then they were last year and all MSU and Nebraska have done is disappoint regardless of their coach. Scott Frost was coming home and bringing back the good old days. Mel Tucker was the next big thing until he wasn’t. Matt Rhule took all the excitement and name ID and used it to maybe crack a .500 record in year 2. Cig came in with far less fanfare and recruited without the hype. Let them hate us now because they are really going to hate us later.

The secret to Cignetti's success is his ability to get quarterbacks to play at a very high level. Look at what Rourke has accomplished, it's what Cignetti is so good at developing.

For this very reason, Cignetti should have a shot at winning a bunch of games on a yearly basis. That makes his approach very sustainable from my point of view.

The biggest element that the haters are missing is that the "culture" has been established and we will have a core of players returning (next year) to continue building on it... This year they had to start from scratch...

The Cignetti era is going to be fun to watch (is my prediction)...

Yes, and he’s said this multiple times in interviews.

He’s said he’ll probably hit the portal hard again after this season because of so many seniors.

Then follows that up with saying that the foundation will be built with high school recruits.

People/pundits aren’t quite sure how to react to what he’s doing here because it hasn’t been done before (not like this).

I can somewhat agree, but I’ve heard him
say his defense has been good, too, and as we know from the Michigan game the special teams have also been good. To me, it seems his success has been having a complete team with no weaknesses. That’s what I see in this current IU team.

This is certainly a very complete team, no doubt about it. I also think he had several complete teams at JMU. That is a testimony to his coaching/recruiting/developing chops.

His teams at JMU had very good QB play, too. That circles back to my original point; he knows quarterbacks. Hell, Dolson stated that was a key reason he hired Cignetti.

Ha. Pretty sure the first year is the toughest for a head coach for obvious reasons. Nothing happened this past year that is notably not repeatable or “unsustainable.”
