An immediate family member is trained EMT. For 20 years, has trained and fielded German Shepherd dogs trained as 'cadaver dogs' in multiple states, mostly Indiana and contiguous states.
I asked if the authorities had been in contact....here is the answer;
'The CUE Center for Missing Persons is my primary agency.
We must wait until local infrastructure has been restored. We generally do not work disaster call outs, but there will still be people missing when the dust settles. All of our certifications require LE or EMA oversight. FEMA has a few cadaver dogs deployed as well as NC and TN teams. The odor of decomposition is so overwhelming it is causing the dogs to alert far from the actual source(the deceased). It is tricky and dangerous right now.
There can be long term consequences for handlers and dogs. I donated to Samaritan's Purse because they offer spiritual and material support.
I have had handlers call me.
I warn them; You cannot unsee, unhear or unsmell what you will be exposed to. One certainly understands the magnitude of the horror."
