New Castle fieldhouse question

Also, if you're driving from Indy, you'll go right by Knightstown, so you might be able to swing in and check out the Hoosiers Gym.

Beat me to it! For fans of the movie & basketball in general, it's a must see. When I stood down in the locker room, the hairs on my neck stood up; I could see Gene Hackman & the boys. Also, I am one-for-one in that gym.

Benson was a soph in 1971; NC actually played BOTH semistate and State finals at Hinkle (that was the last year before the finals moved to Assembly Hall).

NC won the semistate before playing Elkhart in the afternoon game of the state finals. Benson hit 2 free throws to send it to another OT before finally falling 65-60 in 3 OT's. I'm crying as a 9 year old (thought for sure the Trojans would win state) when my dad says "dry your tears, son - no way they were gonna beat East Chicago tonight". And he was right; that was an awesome ECW team. Junior Bridgeman, Pete Trgovich, Tim Stoddard (who played at Lousiville, UCLA and NC State, respectively). What an absolutely loaded team.

All three played on NCAA championship teams.

Bridgeman didn’t win a title, but made it to the ‘75 Final Four with Louisville. Stoddard and NC St knocked off Trgovich and UCLA IN 74 National Semifinals before beating Al Maguire and Marquette for the title. Pete, of course, won in ‘73 & ‘75.

NC Fieldhouse when packed has always been my favorite place to watch a game. Kids today have NO idea what sectionals were back in the 70's / 80's.
This. I don’t know what it was about the Fieldhouse, but things sometimes looked strange in there. Colors seemed different, dimensions were a little funny. I remember one time a manager handed Kent Benson what looked like a completely enormous shoe. I thought it was a joke clown shoe, but, no, he just put it on.

Kent was just BIG, college ready from the start in an era when players were a lot bulkier if you played inside.

Won a basketball at an Evening Optimist Father-Son banquet Kent spoke at his senior year. My dad said “Take it up and have him sign it”. Will never forget 4th grade me walking up and asking him - he was so stinking tall he was intimidating. But he was absolutely great about it - knelt down beside me and asked me my name, then wrote “Best Wishes, Kent Benson”.

See Kent every now and then, and we have a laugh remembering that one.

One day I was walking around Arlen’s and stopped by a large display and suddenly I realized it was Kent Benson and I was way too close to him.

What’s the of the steak sandwich place?
Ice House, used to be the bar side to The Tank (500 ft seafood buffet).

Tank burned in May 1979, and the owner never had fire insurance. Which was a shame; cool place. Indy 500 drivers used to come over the week of the race every year.

Still got our steak sandwiches, though. Hot cheese, pickle n onion. Little horseradish on top. Good stuff!

Arlens - there's another blast from the past! That place has been gone over 40 years. Our BWW is where that used to be.

Sadly, this is true.

NC Fieldhouse when packed has always been my favorite place to watch a game. Kids today have NO idea what sectionals were back in the 70's / 80's. And when I was a kid you couldn't get a ticket to the Regional if your team wasn't playing in it. In 1973, Richmond and New Castle played in the regional championship and the place was sold out. The new junior high had just been built that year next to the high school with Bundy Auditorium (which seats something like 1,200). They sold out tickets to Bundy and piped in the local radio broadcast of the game.

Talk it over with your wife and let me know. If you all want to try to come up for the Fri or Sat games, I can definitely work something out.
I remember when the sectional was 8 teams and New Castle got half the tickets and the other 7 teams got the other half. It was packed for every session and we went even if K-town was not playing that night.

Brad Miley - there's another blast from the past.

Played at Speedway until his senior year when he moved to Rushville. Made an already good Lions team into a GREAT team. Believe he still holds the state finals records for rebounds with 29 when Rushville came back from 21 down in the 2nd qtr to beat Drake Morris (jr year) and EC Washington in the afternoon game. They then lost to Dave Colescott and Marion that evening.
I am pretty sure I went to the Rushville vs K-Town game at K-Town in 76 and the game was great.

See, I am different since I had played in that gym many times before the movie and was in those cold locker rooms so I did not ever see what the big deal about that gym was.

Back when Knightstown had Brent McGee.

I thought they were better the year before with Galen Thomas and Jeff Galyen to go along with McGee.

Someone mentioned that earlier,I wonder if you need to talk to someone in advance if you want to see it?
Might not hurt to check in advance.

I know of some people who volunteer at the Hoosier Gym - let me know when you're thinking about coming for sure and I'll contact them for you.

One year our starting lineup didn't have anyone smaller that 6'3 and for that size school is pretty good. Actually Brent's son is the HC and K-town now and he was the best player on our team that went to the semi state in 2006.

Also when they use to have mini Mr. basketball for players under 6'0 Art Rose of K-Town won that award.
Helluva player. Everyone hated him because he was so cocky, but he could back it up.

Dropped 39 on New Castle his sophomore year in the sectional semifinals. Panthers then lost to Tri High by a point (for the 3rd time that year - all three meetings had nearly identical scores) for the sectional title.

Yeah he went to a small college in North Carolina and had a bad accident that broke his back but he was a great 3 sport athlete.

You are correct. Knew there were three titles among them. Must have assigned one of Pete's to Junior.

That’s cool. Small world. I can’t remeber which year it was, but one summer Cory hit a growth spurt and came back 4 or 5 inches taller and was reverse dunking. I was like who is this guy! I’m pretty sure he ended up at U of I.

I played a couple of times at the field house, it’s a great gym. My high school gym was Case Arena (held around 5-6k) and would sell out for sectionals and regionals, in the 90s, before class basketball and the environments were unreal. Needless to say, I can’t stand class basketball.
Legendary UCLA coach John Wooden, who played on the 1927 Martinsville state championship team, couldn't believe an era was over. "I never thought it would pass," said Wooden from his home in California. "I am very much surprised and disappointed. In doing away with this, they take away something that is unique and a part of Indiana history."
