NCAA Tournament to Expand to 72 or 76 Teams

I've never understood the new "68" number. So why not make it 72 or whatever? Seems just as arbitrary.

Since it seems like they're intent on adding teams. I'd make all the 11 and 12 seed line games, play in games. So total of 72 teams, if my math is right? Play all 8 games in Dayton... 12PM, 3PM, 6PM, 9PM...on Tuesday and Wednesday. No conference tournament champions in the play in games, no matter what.

Oh great... it will be so exciting to see the 19-16, 12th place B12 Cincinatti Bearcats take on the 17-15 Florida State Seminoles in an expanded tournament game. The expansion to 68 sucked, so now they are going to add even more?

I like the 68. It starts the touney earlier and I enjoy the tourney.

Agree, but that’s a pretty good reason to those receiving the money.
We'll agree to disagree on this one.

The thing I will say, when they did it, it would have been more apropos to have all the play-ins be the final teams in, the bubble teams not the autos from the MEAC conference.

Money, money, and money. It's all about generating even more TV money to the point they might as well let all teams in. It will ruin selection Sunday, at least for me, which has always generated a lot of interest to include which bubble teams get in, although the seeding and placement of teams will still draw interest. With the new number being 72-76, if that's the case, the separation of teams as to who deserves a spot, will be increasing more difficult with even more criticism over the selection process.

Get rid of championship week, and let everyone in. Some good teams would actually play fewer games, with less wear and tear. The 1 seed would get a bye and then play a weekend game against the winner of the 256/257 game. Chance to rest up for the top 50 or so teams.

Edit: sorry, misanalyzed it. The 1 seed would play a thursday/Friday game against the 256/257 winner, and then the 128 seed on the weekend if the seeds hold.

The worst 108 teams would play 3 games the first week, if they keep winning.

Totally better.

One reason is that, from what I understand, the basketball championships include the smallest percentage of overall teams in their postseason championship.
That may be true but the teams that don't make it have absolutely no place in the conversation in the first place. No team higher than an 8 seed has ever won. There is absolutely no reason to incude more teams. If anything they should cut it back to 32.

I think this ignores that college basketball is entertainment like any other form of entertainment. The goal is not simply to crown the best team champion. It’s to provide as much entertainment as possible. (Of course for those making money it’s a different issue an understandably so.

If the goal was to crown the BEST TEAM for the season, you wouldn't have this format anyway. It's about a lot more than that...at every level. No NBA team seeded lower than 6th has ever won, but there are 20 teams involved now.

Expand the tournament plus:

Allow one transfer per player for postseason play only (for players on teams that make the tourney)

Allow all players that are not NCAA bound to be up for auction , but in order to buy one of these players, who must shed a comparable NIL amount (cut players)

Each NCAA tournament team gets one additional roster spot to use in post season

Allow

If you just want some post-season showcase games for your mediocre alma mater team, fine, set those up separately, make that the NIT or the "Crown Tournament" or make up some new ones. I don't think they got much interest, I know I didn't watch them.

I'm fine with it, as long as no additional "auto bids" are given.
I wouldn't see an issue with giving auto bids to both Regular Season and Conference tourney winners. At least those teams did something to earn the bid even if the conference tourney winners sometimes come out of left field. It sux when a mid major conference regular season team gets knocked out when they deserve the bid over some power conference 9th or 10th seed. They should probably just let all teams in the tournament like in HS. In that scenario the conference tournaments can be scrapped.

This is the only way it will stay good. I agree. My #1 sports interest to me is fading slower every season.

If they just add to the play in games, its not a big deal. Those games are now baked in to the whole thing, and I enjoy watching them for the most part. Adding a couple more games on Tuesday and Wednesday of that week isn't a big deal.

And while hopefully IU won't have to worry about those play in games any more, in the unfortunate event that they do land in one of them, watching them play in those games is better than them not making it at all...for me anyways.

Basketball 68 of 355 for 19%
Football 12 of 134 for 9%
Baseball 64 of 304 for 21%
Softball 64 of 291 for 22%
Volleyball 64 of 344 for 18.6%

Not the lowest, FB by far is--and that was really 2 or 4 for a while, BBall is basically the same as the other 3 that have a 64 team tournament

Football has to be the lowest obviously. Not saying you said otherwise.

People watch 8 vs 9 seeded games in the tourney even though they have no shot at a title. Getting more teams into the tourney doesn't mean more teams now are more likely to contend for a title. Having more games to watch in regard to the NCAA tourney, is just more fun.
