Misery loves company

Nebraska is a pretty good team at home. They can score. 86 vs IU, 72 @ Wisconsin, 88 vs Boilers in their last 3.

Been saying all season this Nebraska team is like the 2012 Hoosiers. Breakout year. And tonight they had their Kentucky game.

They certainly are red hot for now. They start missing shots and they'll fade. Not sure I've ever seen a team shoot so well for as long a stretch. That level of play is hard to sustain.

No one else can clear the stink of this game, except IU. Gotta come out and play well, and soon, or it’s gonna get ugly.
I think we’re NIT bound. And not a 1 seed either. Sucks. But just being realistic based on results and overall play. The fact that we couldn’t blow out the early Cupcake U home games told me this team will never sniff the top 25 this season.

Not quite, that IU team had the #2 & #5 pick in the NBA draft the following year. I highly doubt this Nebraska team even has a future NBA player.

I don't see this getting fixed. After allowing OSU to outrebound us on their offensive glass and getting outrebounded by 20, any team worth a damn would not let that happen again, and yet we did. 18 turnovers? 4-15 on FTs? This wasn't a bad game, this is just who this team is.

I don't either.

When all the metrics match what you see when you watch them play...at this point in the season...its a pretty good indicator of who they'll continue to be.

We haven't looked all that good in any games yet this year. And we've looked really bad in a number of them. There isn't a single shining performance to point to, and to anchor hopes to.

Having guys like Ware, Reneau, and Mgbako on the roster...and coming off 2 NCAA Tournament seasons, probably has all our expectations set higher than what this team is going to be capable of achieving. And at this point, I've lost all faith that Woody has any answers or ability to turn it around as quickly and fully as is needed.

Nope. Letting KU off the mat was a killer.
KU game was decent, I guess. But the finish left such a bad taste in my mouth its hard to remember the solid 2/3 of a game we played. I guess maybe that game is a sign we might compete with teams like Purdue/Wisky/lllinois, at home, for parts of those games. I'll be very pleasantly surprised if we're able to close them out though...

Yeah, they were on fire. Also had 9 steals vs 1 steal for the Boilers. More assists. Their red hot shooting is the only way they win against Purdue but also their D creates more turnovers and they passed the ball better. Playing at home helps.

It doesn't make me feel any better about the state of our program. But if we get beat by the Boilers it will still hurt.
I just posted this because I wasn't even paying attention to other games, and was surprised to see Mayor Fred's squad slapping them around.
But no, doesn't wash the stink off of last night's IU performance. This team just does not have any momentum this year. This can't be good for Queen and LIam Mc is probably starting to get a little jumpy.

i'm 56 yrs old (that hurts to type) and can go to my gym at lunch today and hit 4-15 FTs blindfolded. Boggles my mind. But so does getting your ass kicked repeatedly on the boards. Actually...that just pisses me off. FT shooting is all about form and focus. Rebounding, as I've said before...is about growing some balls and playing pissed off. Passive players don't block out. Aggressive players block out your ass into the sideline camera guys. We don't block out...we just stand, watch, and jump.

In situations like this I am hoping that recruits have the opinion, "They stink so I can get some playing time"

I wish that were the case, but most of these 5 star super academy recruits, I would assume, already know the playing time, and the NIL $, is part of the 'deal' they have 'negotiated'.
Bigger concern is what coaching instability does to recruiting over the next 24 months. As with CMD and CTC...and CAM...once word starts circulating that the natives are getting restless with the current coach, other programs use that against us in the recruiting battles. It will only hurt us.

Good team free throw shooting percentages come from a few things...

1. Having good overall shooters, obvious one (we don't have many of those). Probably a lot of this is determined by recruiting. But also development in the program once they get there.
2. Having a decent balance of who shoots the FTs...because of the offense we run, a large percentage of our FT attempts, most games, come from our bigs. Refer back to number 1...they aren't our better shooters.
3. The importance of them is emphasized in practices. Early season, actual painful running is on the line for FT attempts. Throughout the year, strategically, free throws are practiced at varying moments of practices, especially when the team is most likely to be gassed. If they miss them, its pointed out, maybe some running, but some sort of emphasis is made on making them.
4. Teams that are stronger mentally, and are able to focus better, generally, make their free throws. So really any/all of a coaching staffs program efforts to instill mental toughness, focus, attention to detail, etc... within their program, will help with FT shooting.

No clue what Woody does with number 3. But it appears the other things are likely going against us. He hasn't effectively recruited a lot of good shooters. Can't think of any shooters that have gotten better/more consistent in his program. We target our bigs offensively, for the most part. And its obvious this team isn't overly strong mentally.

true, TJD was a mediocre FT shooter, and shot half the team's FTs, so we were never going to be 75% as a squad.

But the FT shooting from our backcourt over the past 5-7 yrs, at least to my eyes, has been a little subpar.

there was a time, many yrs ago, when IU would get into the bonus and I'd think "cool, now we'll kill them at the FT line". Now when we get into the bonus I think "this would be great...if we could actually make 2 FTs in a row consistently".
