The Michigan game looks like a matchup nightmare for us, we are going to have to try different combos and stay out of foul trouble

Freshman on the road in the BIG spells danger

Match Up possibles

Iggy - J smith/A Durham/ Morgan/ McRoberts

J Poole Livers - Langford/Davis

Mathews - A Durham/Langford/ Mc Roberts

Teske - Morgan/Davis

Simpson - Greene/Phinisee

Keys to the Game

  1. Can’t in foul trouble MORGAN
  2. Settling for threes Greene
  3. Great game for J. Smith on Iggy
  4. Low turnovers 12 max
Wildcards

  1. Forrester on Iggy
  2. Damezi shooting threes

If Rob is back and is healthy the game is not a matchup problem at all. They are going to have problems guarding Morgan and Romeo too. We need to keep playing the inside out game and not turn it over to stay in it and get to the line. Must play with great poise from the opening tip. I’d go right at Tester to get fouls on him.

Iggy- Smith/Morgan
Mathews - Green/Durham
Simpkins - Rob/Green
Poole - Romeo/Zack
Tester - Morgan/Davis/Fitzner

Good transition defense and keeping morgan out of foul trouble will be key against michigan. Romeo needs to play strong and score a lot at the line or hit j's.

I think DeRon may also be critical in that game. IU's guards need to seal drives off the best they can.

IU must win the boards. Limit second chances for michigan.

IU beats Michigan in the hall, book it.

We're playing the 2019 Michigan team, not the 1992 version.

I think IU will split with Michigan. I expect home court to be the difference though I think UM will lose a close one and the game in Crisler will be more like a 10 point loss for IU.

Sadly, this IU team would have no chance against that 92 Michigan team. Morgan would be exposed as too small defensively against Webber and Howard and DeRon would be too slow. It would also be THE game to test whether Romeo is ready for the league.

Yet in the end it would NOT be recorded as a win for UM.

Morgan stays out of foul trouble.

Limit turnovers.

You do those 2 things and you put yourself in position to win.

We absolutely can not lose to Illinois, so much that I think it's more important (as in potentially damaging) than the Michigan game.

I think we'll be fortunate to go 3 and 3 over the next 6 games after Illinois. Will be smiling wide if we go 4-2. Wouldn't be stunned if we go 2-4 (but not happy).

6 and 3 would be a nice record going into February. The very tail end of our schedule lightens up significantly.

I think 5 conference losses could win the conference this year.

MG80 We're OK if Rob is back Yikes !! Blue will target Devonte from tip off Blue forcers turnovers and low FG% We are going to need others to step up Al/ McRob /Justin Best bet go through Juann at High post with dive cuts don't settle for 3's

Phin is out for the UM game. Green is somehow gotta get his act together.

Romeo needs to be super aggressive and get Brazdeikis into foul trouble early. I cannot wait to see how Romeo responds!

Why would Forrester suddenly become an answer for a key UM player? Beside the fact he was unavailable against Illinois, he isn't going to be asked to play a big role on the road.

Rob won't be playing so it will be Green, Romeo, Al, and McBob filling in if needed in the back court. I liked the wrinkle of Romeo playing out top.

We don't have a true post player playing major minutes. We counter with speed and athletic ability. We won't match up well with some teams, but we can still beat UM in other ways.

Fair analysis, and I agree... although 4-2 is attainable if we get RP back soon, stay healthy and can overcome these slow starts. I'd like to see Zack start vs Smith. I think we could use his calming effect and bring Justin off the bench. I'd also like to see Davis in the starting lineup at some point... why not start now.

so you're saying keep green on the bench
I'm willing to give him another chance (basically out of necessity ) but if he starts Sunday anything like he finished last night I'm pulling him and putting the ball in Romeo or Al's hands.

I saw in another thread where someone said it's alarming for a Jr point guard (Green) to be making the mistakes he's making. That observation tells me two things: 1) Even though we're a lot better than last year, we're still not close to where Archie is gonna take us. He hasn't had enough time to develop quality depth (injuries have been a killer this year in that regard); 2) just think about how good FRESHMAN Phinisee is going to be in two years - especially if Archie keeps pulling in the quality guys to surround him with? Future is bright . . .;)

No they don't ...

they're 198th in created TO.

Michigan doesn't gamble or overplay on defense under Beilein, they play containment.

Where do people get this bullsh*t? Do you just make crap up?
Yes. Probably 95% of this board is opinion stated as fact.

Braz won't be guarding Rome much if at all, different positions. Not to mention he couldn't if he tried - too slow. Rome will probably be checked by Matthews or Poole.

RP should sit this one out anyway. No chance IU wins Sunday so get him healthy for the next one. Hoping we don't get embarrassed like the Duke game but afraid of a repeat.

Ok, I did not realize that he plays the 4 in their line up. I know that it is not the traditional role. I think Josh should be one of the tougher matchups for him offensively in the BIG with his agility and athleticism. Hope that I am right!

He's an awfully skilled player, though not as big, only 6'7, and in a different "position", he may be better on both ends as a frosh than Wagner was as a junior.

Probably freshman of the year and 1st team AC right now. Justin needs to be locked in it/s going to be a tough night for him. ..

Who would Teske guard then?
I’d love it if that was the matchup. Juwan could force his 7’1 butt out to the perimeter, which would open driving lanes for Romeo.

I could be wrong, but I’m not so sure Beilein doesn’t match Teske up to Smith. That keeps him close to the basket as a defender/rebounder. Justin hasn’t shown an ability to consistently knock down a perimeter jumper. Plus (in my thinking) Beilein will want to control JM early and not let him get on a roll. As good as Romeo has been, IMO it’s Juwan’s play that will make / break us in this game.

How do you see the matchups, player by player?

Beilein will generally go straight up .. but ya never know. I mean RMK played zone against ND, right?

A guess ..
DG/Simpson
AD/Poole or Matthews
RL/Matthews or Poole
JS/Spazidiekis
JM/Teske

They only go 7 deep also and one of their 7 (Livers) had back spasms and is questionable for Sunday. Their only weakness is interior depth but they have a matchup disadvantage with their style of defense and Morgan..

Watch the South Carolina game and how Martin used his big (bringing him out and driving him against Teske) I think he found a flaw.

IIRC they may also switch 2 through 4 .. ie Spaz, Poole, Matthews..

Hope Livers takes the day off on Sunday. He's one of their best 3 point shooters.

IMO those are all great matchups for Michigan - except for Teske on Morgan.

If Juwan gets hot from outside (Butler), Teske will be forced to go out to guard him. That opens up things for RL , Al or DG to drive; or, if JM takes him off the dribble, we could get good looks from other defenders dropping off to help.

Reason I play CM on Juwan? As you said, he’s their best defender. He’s quick, has length, and while he doesn’t have Morgan’s bulk he’s stronger than most realize. My nightmare is CM beating Juwan to the spot defensively and picking up charging calls on him - exactly what cannot happen if we hope to have any chance.
