Winning coaches are always more powerful than their ADs.
What has Penny actually won?

Now that's funny.
add 2 Indiana Mr. Basketballs ! ! !Last year we got Romeo Langford. Consensus top 5 player... is that not too talent? This year TJD. Two McDonald’s all Americans. Very interested in how that’s not “top talent”
The recruiting battle. And that’s 80-90% of college coaching. What has Penny actually won?
YDSThe recruiting battle. And that’s 80-90% of college coaching.
I think this is incredibly naïve. Lots of schools with better reputations/situations could have offered the same exact thing. Add on to the fact Penny has limited coaching experience and they were either toddlers or not born when he was peak Penny - they probably have no idea whom he is outside of YouTube. Just because said person played/starred in the NBA doesn't mean he has some magical wand that can advance them to being NBA players. I'll give the kids more credit then that.
I won't even mention the whole Nike thing(oh wait, I did).
I don't really care either way because I don't want IU focusing on OAD's and would prefer them to build a program around 3-4 year kids that actually value the program and playing for the school and the legacy.
Not exactly Mr. Calipari. The recruiting battle. And that’s 80-90% of college coaching.

It's is obvious how to evade the NCAA nowadays. Leave no paper trail and do anything incriminating face to face with the party you are doing business. Deny whatever wrongdoing whatsoever if someone comes snooping. Sue the NCAA once you hear what the gist/details will be handed down. Big schools and their teams of lawyers skew anything necessary in the timeline mentioned to put reasonable doubt towards the incriminating individuals. Not to mention, the NCAA loses money when their babies are on probation.
Want a top flight kid that may have accepted gifts or said coach is going to supply him some? Hire a team to sanitize all social media and the player's image overall.
In other words, IU self reporting made it loud and clear to the blue bloods to NEVER go that route unless they want gutted (yes I know we sanctioned ourselves, but if we hadn't would the NCAA be more lenient or strict?) Best way to cheat and stay clear is destroy any documents pertaining to the violation at hand and lie your teeth off.
I do not condone this, it is just reality.
