Memphis athletic director Tom Bowen has resigned. Allie Prescott will be the school’s interim AD.
No wonder it’s so hard for IU to win a recruiting battle with some of these schools. $$$$$$$ Seems like AD didn’t want any part of CBB recruiting cheating. Such a shame that the NCAA lets schools get away with this. Either pay all the players or punish those who do. What a joke

Things are completely out of control.

I think when UNC got away with 20 years of fake classes with no consequences it was the final straw for the NCAA. It may be time for the Big 10 and the PAC 10 to explore alternative arrangements to the NCAA. Break it up and start all over, it's rotten to the core.

My guess is that he left Memphis because he does not want to be part of the American Athletic Conference when there are greener pastures elsewhere.

If caught, Penny will claim, "It wasn't me . . . it was that LITTLE PENNY GUY! He has been haunting me for years!"

How do we know Memphis is cheating? Have there been rumors or do all the players drive new cars and not have to go to class?

It is possible Penny runs a program with few rules and that is appealing to kids that aren't interested in an education. That works until someone blows the whistle. Memphis has never struck me as a great academic institution so they don't have to live up to their own standards.

Considering Nike was the shoe company that sponsored his AAU team, Nike was the shoe company that endorsed him, and Nike runs Duke/UK recruiting....I'd say it's a pretty safe bet they are somehow involved (and it's very difficult to believe Memphis would beat out Duke and UK for a top 3 recruit just because of you argument about less rules!
and reponsibilities...which is without a doubt untrue at UK). I mean we have pretty good evidence Zion required a Nike payment to go to Duke. I suppose innocent until proven guilty is in order, but...

The fact UNC got off and Will Wade and Sean Miller will likely remain coaches show how far off the rails this has gone. this so called NCAA scandal is a big dud so far. I still love college bbal but not like I once did. Nothing about it is pure at all.

I guess its possible he is not cheating but those kids sure are not going to that school to learn. Memphis does not exactly have the greatest reputation.

Per Memphis media, AD Bowen and the Memphis President did not get along, at all. AD's contract is expiring and he was offered a 6 MONTH extension. I'm thinking that offer prompted his reaction. The article stated that Bowen was "pursuing other opportunities". I wish it was due to Penny and company breaking rules, but it may not be the case. What an expose' that would have been. Would the NCAA even act on it?

give them a chance to get on campus. then you'll know

Absolutely how I interpret this resignation. He will look like a genius in 3-5 years.

My first thought was that Penny was becoming more powerful and was making it difficult for he AD to have control of the program.

I like that Memphis is going all out on recruiting, let them dilute the pool and become another one and done factory.

Of course the one and done probably goes away in the next year or two but still.

The FBI case has established that the going rate for these guys is $250k. Play the game baby!

Love how the AD, who is on the brink of a massive athletic turnaround because of, ah hem, recruiting success decides to get the hell out of dodge vs waiting and using this year as a springboard.

I don't believe Penny is cheating. I think he fell into a great position at his alma mater with a bunch of roster spots open where he could offer a bunch of playing time and use his time and connections to the NBA as a selling point. Penny hasn't been around long enough to prove one way or another that he is capable of getting kids to the next level. But as an 18 year old, the appeal for immediate playing time under a former NBA star is more than enticing.

Dude hasn't played in over 12 years and he was hardly a star then. The fact is his stardom faded after about 2000. These kids he's bringing on board by the busload right now were between just born and 6 years old. Hardly impressionable. There has to be something other than that going on.

I think this is incredibly naïve. Lots of schools with better reputations/situations could have offered the same exact thing. Add on to the fact Penny has limited coaching experience and they were either toddlers or not born when he was peak Penny - they probably have no idea whom he is outside of YouTube. Just because said person played/starred in the NBA doesn't mean he has some magical wand that can advance them to being NBA players. I'll give the kids more credit then that.

I won't even mention the whole Nike thing(oh wait, I did).

I don't really care either way because I don't want IU focusing on OAD's and would prefer them to build a program around 3-4 year kids that actually value the program and playing for the school and the legacy.

Well, if nothing else, at least we know you aren't a feepaw sock puppet.

It's not that far-fetched in the least. Two of of his recruits played directly for him when he coached at Memphis East. One of the recruits is from across state lines in Olive Branch MS and is cousins with one of the kids from Memphis East. There's another recruit who played at a different high school in Memphis. Penny is a LEGEND in the city of Memphis. These kids all know who Penny is as he has been a fixture in the community while they were growing up. Mike Miller is on staff and his brother runs an AAU program who these kids played for as well. You can keep shouting something illegal is going on until you're blue in the face but there's nothing that implicates Penny or Memphis. It's not out of this world to think a bunch of kids from Memphis want to stay home and play for Memphis.

He can recruit kids that don't need much development . They need a place to hang out until they can play professionally. Let's see if he can build a roster once the one and done players go straight to the NBA. There is more to coaching and running a program than acquiring talent. Mike Davis learned that at IU. He wasn't ready then. Let's see if Penny can build a team or deal with the daily challenges of young men.

Oh the irony. So many people here accusing Memphis of cheating with absolutely ZERO evidence.

Meanwhile we have a coach whose brother is waist deep in the middle of a NCAA investigation for paying players. And our coach was an assistant for him AT THAT SCHOOL.

I’m not accusing either of cheating, but some people need to get a clue. At very least quit throwing stones at others.

This might be the only thing we ever agree on, but you're spot on.

Wow. So bitter. Penny played when these young mens parents were fans. He also has Mike Miller another NBA guy helping convince kids to come aboard. Some of you banking on all this recruiting success to end for certain schools once OND is done. Ya probably not. And it def dosent mean IU will all of a sudden become relevant again with its so called three to four year guys who value the program and tradition, so much more then a kid who gets a once in a life time chance to move forward and reach their finacial and personal dreams. Its sour grapes. Your angry because your program has fallen off the map. For whatever reason. You dont think Archie or Crean didnt recruit these OND? They did and do. Kids just dont want to go to IU. Sorry. Its not shoe deals or buckets of money. IU is just not a place top talent looks at and says. Ya that tradition and great enviroment is were I wanna go. And even if every kid is on the take. You dont think Archie knows his way around those areas? His big bro did. This notion IU is in the place they are today is because kids want to get paid. Or they dont want to go to class. Or they dont care about tradition and IU only offers these things so kids take the lucrative and easy way. Instead of coming to IU and being a part of this great tradition for three to four years. Man that sounds sad. Just not true. IUs problems are a lot deeper and have nothing to do with other schools and how and what they offer these young men. To just jump to Penny paying players and ADs leaving over possible troubles in the future. Is just sour grapes. Sorry but a guy who was a HS coach two years ago. Is out recruiting your tradition and offer of plenty of playing time and a chance to help turn around a program thats been going south for the past fifteen years. Maybe figure out why IU is just not appealing to not only top talent. But middle talent aswell. That would be my start. Instead of lobbing rediculous unfounded acusations out of anger and jelousy.

He just won three consecutive state championships. I think everybody knows who he is.

Nice grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Clearly that vaunted Memphis education is everything we think it is. Well done.

Last year we got Romeo Langford. Consensus top 5 player... is that not too talent? This year TJD. Two McDonald’s all Americans. Very interested in how that’s not “top talent”

You're right. I mean Will Wade sure turned LSU around in a hurry and beat Kentucky's ass last year.

Nothing to see there.

These kids are all turning down $250k because they love the big city life of Lexington and Durham.

It's not strange at all for a team in a mid major conference to start pulling in a boatload of $250k players regardless of Penny's NBA career (which was considered a failure by the way).

Maybe they don't want the money, maybe they want to be coached by a guy who can get them into the league, or has a massive fan base or is on national TV all the time...all things Memphis is not.

Calipari recruited pretty well there...or course he had to vacate a season because of Rose but nevermind that.

I think when UNC got away with 20 years of fake classes with no consequences it was the final straw for the NCAA. It may be time for the Big 10 and the PAC 10 to explore alternative arrangements to the NCAA. Break it up and start all over, it's rotten to the core.

It's is obvious how to evade the NCAA nowadays. Leave no paper trail and do anything incriminating face to face with the party you are doing business. Deny whatever wrongdoing whatsoever if someone comes snooping. Sue the NCAA once you hear what the gist/details will be handed down. Big schools and their teams of lawyers skew anything necessary in the timeline mentioned to put reasonable doubt towards the incriminating individuals. Not to mention, the NCAA loses money when their babies are on probation.

Want a top flight kid that may have accepted gifts or said coach is going to supply him some? Hire a team to sanitize all social media and the player's image overall.

In other words, IU self reporting made it loud and clear to the blue bloods to NEVER go that route unless they want gutted (yes I know we sanctioned ourselves, but if we hadn't would the NCAA be more lenient or strict?) Best way to cheat and stay clear is destroy any documents pertaining to the violation at hand and lie your teeth off.

I do not condone this, it is just reality.

IU was in a hurry to put the bad acts behind them. UNC and now AZ, LSU, Kansas and MSU with the sexual assaults are willing to drag issues out so the media gets tired of reporting on them and the public forgets about it.

Did IU learn from the experience? With UL stripper/prostitutes, UNC academic tricks and schools standing by top coaches with serious allegations, I no longer feel bound by any code of honor. Screw the NCAA as long as students aren't harmed (like MSU) or in danger.

The NCAA has lost credibility and some of their punitive power. When was the last time a team was banned from TV appearances? The BTN and SEC networks would never stand for that. Reducing scholarships and post season bans are as bad as it gets.
