McCollum to Iowa

Izzo is the current kingpin of BT basketball coaching. When he retires it will be Painter. When Painter retires, it will become DeVries, who is five years younger than Porkchop.
What happened to Dusty May? He took a Michigan team who won 8 games last year and took them to the Sweet 16 and still playing. DeVries did not even make the tournament, the BT is loaded with some great coaches and have some really good teams coming back next year, we are talking top 10, IU does not even have a starting five yet, IU fans have a nasty habit of raising their flag on the top of a pile of s___t and then standing around and pointing fingers at anything that moves! Maybe this time you will get lucky.

Good point about Dusty May: he beat the shit out of PU in the BTT. Please, tell us more about how Matt Painter is a better coach than Bill Self.

Football is all that matters in college sports and IU is kicking ass there.

I'll take the other side of that bet. Iowa is extremely difficult place to win at. McCollum will struggle to be better than Fran.
I hope that's how it goes, but I don't think it will.

Fran never higher than 3rd in B1G and 2 games over .500 despite some really down years overall by others in the league. He never won his second game the 6-7 times he made the tournament either. 2 games over .500 in the east coast and southern conferences too. I don't see McCollum only winning 4 conf games, which Fran has done twice. The second time in year 8.

Getting caught up with the FBI recruiting stuff could lead someone to think he was dirty. It looks like the level playing field has brought him back to the pack a bit. Paint has had a couple of back-to-back stinker seasons in his career, but has had a level of success we can only hope our recent choice has.

Great hire for Iowa but I'm glad Indiana went with DeVries. Has proven he can do it at a higher level than McCollum and I assume Dolson wasn't banking his first, and possibly only, real basketball hire on a coach with 1 year of D1 experience.

I am highly intrigued how McCollum will recruit at Iowa. Drake's top 4 in minutes (Abreu, Mascari, Jackson, and Stirtz) all came over from NWMS and all but Stirtz were super seniors. Did recruit the MVC 6MOY in Tavion Banks and could bring him and Stirtz to Iowa. I just wonder with Iowa's purported funding woes if he'll attract talent that can compete in the B1G. He's probably not going to be lucky enough to hit on local families to have NBA-adjacent players.

Painter does more with less. Braden Smith would be a first team All American on like 5 other teams. Edey's development was exactly what Painter had been trying to hit on with one of his yearly gargantuan recruits. **** little black and gold brother but Painter is an all-time B1G coach.

Did not build that program? Irrelevant. IIRC, he had no returning players. He had some of his D2 players and filled in the rest.
AND he was 30-3 plus winning a tourney game. In no way shape or form did CDD have anything to do with Drake success this year.

McCollum won 4 national titles at D2. He had a 82% win %. He was something like 138-9 for one five year stretch.
He is a winner and will be a thorn in our sides for years!

Doesn’t matter Ben McCollum> John Wooden.
I was stunned when I saw that Ben McWooden and Drake got rolled yesterday even while out scoring Texes Tech by 18 from the 3 point line.

Iowa had DeVries as their first choice, McCollum as plan B.

IU had 3 1/2 serious candidates. 1. Otzelberger 2. DeVries 3. McCollum/Brownell. Both schools got their 2nd choice and I think a good fit for each.

The problem with BM at IU is that he is not interested in chasing the necessary talent it takes to win a natty, and the 4 and 5 star players aren’t signing up for that style. He wins with less talent, but that less talent comes with a ceiling. Best case scenario is he’s Bo Ryan or Tony Bennett, which is great. But there’s no guarantee he becomes that, either.

You keep telling yourself that garbage and maybe you even believe it but know this........IU and everyone else we now get to see just how good McCollum really is.
You and others keep putting so much value in high caliber recruits as the key to a Championships but how has IU's top level recruits faired in the last 10 years? I don't need to prove anything or convince anyone.....the results are on the way.

You know how many national champions have had high level recruits in the last 60 years? All of them.

I’m not here to bash McCollum. He’s a very good coach and sounds like an outstanding man. He’s what college basketball should be about. I just think he’s a much better fit at Iowa than IU.

I’m glad we have true professional as our AD, and wish he would’ve been allowed to do his job last year.

We'll we'll see how many high level recruits he'll get. Probably their fair share. It's harder at Iowa though for sure.
I just don't know why this narrative he won't or can't recruit high end talent? That just sounds made up out of nothing.
But anyway, I'm only caring if our guy can recruit elite talent. I'm feeling good that he will.

I'm glad Dolson was allowed to do the job this year. It was a bummer last year but it's tough to release a coach after year three. I'm not sold that Dolson would've picked May last year. So I think we did alright. Got lucky one of last year's was willing to jump again.

Talk about an upgrade. I'm suprised BM didn't go to a better program, but home is where the heart is. For people who say Dusty May wouldn't have come to IU last year, I'll enter BM as Exhibit A.

The decision to hire DD will be on full display, it appears.
Iowa is 6-4 vs IU over the last 10 matchups.
I believe since 2000, they have a winning record vs IU in the modern era.
IU currently is the conference red-headed stepchild to most every opponent.
It’s also likely that he saw Iowa as a better job offer in his home state.

Sorry I was at the port hole tonight and missed this post.

Fran did a good job at Iowa.

I think the best case for Iowa is another Fran with a couple NCAA runs sprinkled in. That was ultimately his downfall, he never could break through in March.

Iowa is a bottom half B1G basketball job. People need to be realistic about what success looks like there.
We used to say that about Wisconsin.
