McCaffery Out at Iowa

Who honestly even knows if McCollum wants to leave Drake after one year but I am sure Iowa will go after him hard.
They will......and they will get him too. McCollum would be Iowa's first choice, and they will court him that way. We at IU have to kick the tires on a free car.....and would approach him like he's the fifth or sixth option....thereby sufficiently insulting his intelligence. The guy can flat out coach. When IU has Brownell, and Iowa has McCollum, and the team's play....this board will be ammonia and bleach.....shaken, not stirred.

it may play out that way, but this board gets way too excited about staying in state or "home". That is just not a factor for many professionals, especially not in sports. McCollum may love Iowa and may end up there, but if he's like most professionals he's going to go where he can earn the most and win the most and at the highest level. Our star has certainly dimmed, but not below Iowa. If we both were to target McCollum, chances are that we'd get him.

Nobody wants bronwell but I am not convinced mccollum is just going to kill it either. He did well at lower levels but its a big jump so who knows how he will end up doing.

Not every mid major hire is going to be the next cig in fact most end up failing. There is no guarantee Mccollum is going to succeed at a high level. People just seemed convinced he is the next sure thing just like archie was the next big thing.
Think it was on CrimsonCast (Galen Clavio) but a buddy showed me a graphic they had, and it's an amazing # of past NCAA champions who had won the most games ever in a season at their previous school. I'd guess McCollum's done it twice.

I agree, it's a risk, but I still think this route is our best chance at landing a program elevating coach. Swing for the fences if you're SD and convinced he's the guy.

There's no guarantee anyone is going to succeed at a high level. That's not something that is specific to only McCollum. I'd much rather take a chance on him and maybe be back here in 4 years because it didn't work out the way we all had hoped than hire Brownell and be back here in 4 years because it worked out the way we all thought it would.

Beard is the wild card in all this. Will they pull the trigger on him or have they passed already.

If we got McCollum and he had success, he’s young enough to be here 20 years unless he has NBA coaching aspirations. He’s only 43.

He HAD to go out like that. The world wouldn't make sense otherwise.

If BM looks at the Iowa roster and thinks he can add his guys with eligibility left to it and compete for a conference championship he would probably take the Iowa job after one year at Drake. I'm just speculating but he looks like the next Hawkeyes coach. I look forward to seeing him bring Iowa back. Let's move on.

C Freeman
F- Manawaya/Koch
W- Dix/P. Sandfort/Howard
W- T. Banks/Kingsbury/Combs
P- Stirtz/Harding

He can compete with this.

...
#%&$ing BINGO!

That's exactly it. The dilemma Dolson faces. I'd rather risk downside than risk it working out just like someone's track record says... Hoping 'It's Indiana!' will magically make them a higher level coach. It won't.

IU has methodically worked through the solid hires and sure things.....which is why we are looking for a new coach......again.

The only outlier to that, Coach K, because RMK had most wins at Army
