Why are six players on the IU Womens Basketball team jumping ship, and entering the Transfer Portal? Five Juniors, and one Sophomore. They've had decent success, and I thought their coach was loved. Yarden Garzon is the big surprise. Starter and leading scorer. And Lilly Meister played in every gave, and, I believe was the first sub in.

There are at least two other threads about this you can review

At least we are not ND, they have 4 scholarship kids between those returning and the one freshman commit (who may not play next year with an injury) and had an AA decide to transfer

Unlike most programs, IU Women’s team the last few years had been immune to major portal jumping until the last couple weeks. Unfortunately, this is the new normal in college basketball. Coach Moren has been the beneficiary of transfers Patberg, Cardano, Scalia and others. Hopefully coach can fill roster with adequate ready to talent to stay in the top half of the league.

Given the current college athletics landscape, good players leave good teams all the time.

It's easy to do, there is no penalty and they can make a quick buck. Until the NCAA or some other governing body steps in, this is the new normal. It doesn't always mean that the program is falling apart, it sometimes just means that a particular player is looking for a different opportunity. Simple as that.

I'm surprised I haven't heard too much drumbeating about equal NIL or rev share to all sports including women's. Yet. Some but not too much.

If it was still college sports, it would have merit, but it's pro sports played by pros for colleges in name only, and funding comes from the most eyeballs watching.

That's bc currently the NIL collectives are paying the money and they are not legally part of the schools, therefore not bound by Title IX. Then there was a ruling with the upcoming rev share agreement, that IS paid by the schools, that Title IX would be enforced. The Trump administration reversed that decision, but there will likely be lawsuits about that once it comes to fruition.

Yes. OSU had a huge loss when jr F Cotie McMahon entered the portal. I believe most of the players outside of Garzon didn't see their role changing much next season and were looking for a situation where they were going to see more minutes. Meanwhile, we don't know what players Moren is targeting in the portal right now.

They're not testing the waters. They're leaving. I'd be shocked if any of them return. One at most. And frankly, there's not money in WBB like there is for MBB. Not for role players.
For those of us that follow IUWBB the million dollar question is why leaving. We are not fast enough nor athletic enough to play with the top teams. It may be that Moren has told the leaving players that she is going to try and recruit over them. The problem with that theory is that Lex is very fast and Yardon is a top (>40% 3pt) shooter. I admit Lex can’t score and Yarden is slow but they are both well familiar with the culture and system.
The other side of the coin, and a major worry, is that there are locker room problems and players are leaving due to Moren.
Unless someone is good friends with Chloe, Syd, Strip, one of the coaches, etc I do not think we will find out.

There doesn’t have to be a singular answer. Outside of Yarden, who I have no explanation for that I would go to my grave with, the rest all have very plausible reasons for leaving, most of which probably revolve around regular playing time where they are featured.

This.

They probably have different reasons. The rumor around Garzon is that she is unhappy with admin, not necessarily Moren.

This isn't really surprising. I probably would have transferred for 500 bucks and two kegs of beer, if offerred. Sadly, I wasn't good enough at golf to get that kind of offer. Heh.
