Maryland.

I would have thought Maryland was a good coaching job. Is Nova that much of an upgrade?
Makes one wonder. You hear so much about the revenue share of the B10 and SEC being clearly superior to all other conferences. I would guess the biggest factors are NIL and support/facilities. Maybe he feels that's where Nova is better, or dream job, or he just made a bad decision. With any one individual, you don't know.

Does anyone have a simple explanation for how the revenue share will interact with NIL? I know supposedly the NCAA will be reviewing and approving NIL deals after April 7 or 8, but can't imagine that goes well for them. Surprised they'll still take stands that I would guess will be knocked down in court (again), but I suppose it's their job.

Big east doesn’t have football to worry about. Most money goes to basketball.

Wonder if this is his agent leveraging for a better contract…and/or trying to get a bigger NIL war chest?

Correct. Looks like top Big East teams could be pushing $6-7M in rev share to bball, while P4 schools that need to focus football (their money maker, and they have more sports programs to fund) will be in the $2-4M range for bball.

Pretty interesting.

Agree that Clearinghouse won't have teeth. The minute they tell some kid, especially those from less well off backgrounds, they can't make as much money as they were offered... good luck in court. The Clearinghouse is going to get crushed.

I'm pretty sure NIL and rev share just pool together to the total offer. IUBB is supposed to be $7M NIL + $3.5-4M rev share for something like $11M of player payroll this year. I think players get offers with the headline annual comp number, and the payments will come from the IU athletic dept (rev share) and Hoosiers Connect (NIL) for example. I don't know how the mechanics exactly work behind the scenes, but IU seems to be all over it since they just did this with football.

If you read the long tweets on X last week from Willard, he explained "the why" ... no so much salary but money for his team. One example he gave, last Christmas Maryland was playing in NY and wanted to stay an extra night but was told by the AD *which just moved to SMU", they couldn't stay because they didn't have the money to stay.

NCAA Men's Basketball is an absolute shit show right now.

It needs some adults, with big brass balls, to step up and take control of all this.

If they're going to financially benefit from ALL the literal billions of dollars that are generated...and yes, I whole heartedly agree they should be compensated more than they used to be...but if they are, with many of them to the tune of multiple 7 figures worth of money a year... then they damn well can abide by binding contracts.

They being everyone... Schools, conferences, coaches, players...

This is the only reason I would think the Nova job would be more desirable than the Maryland job. Maryland has the basketball facilities, big money donor(s) (Under Armour), and fan support.
Doesn’t seem true. Money problems was one of his gripes. Last year the fans didn’t show up at all.

When I say they have the big money donors, I don’t mean to suggest that the money is being made available, just that it exists. I’ve been to Maryland games during some of their down years. While they don’t pack the house, they make a better showing than one might think.

Players entering the portal while their team is still playing in the S16 is just nuts.

That's the issue. They're at or near the bottom in NIL and they wouldn't make a commitment to get to a dollar amount that he was happy with going forward. I also assumed the Under Armor guy was just bankrolling them, but he's not. They will struggle to hire a better coach and they're losing Reese and Queen. AD just bolted to SMU. Not good for a team in the S16 currently. I am going to bet the house for FL to cover tonight now though.

Zero chance Kentucky's Big Blue Nation is going to allow Xavier to have a larger "budget" than they do. If this is the setup that remains with Rev share, we'll be back to WWW days immediately.
Kentucky, Kansas, Indiana...they'll be fine with rev share. But there's another 40-50 P4 teams that a lot of the Big East will be able to out-allocate.

Yeah... it could go one of 2 ways... team rallying to make one last stand with their leader... or the distraction and disfunction kills them. I'm going to put a small amount on Florida now, as well. But the first dynamic is keeping me from betting real money on it. Maryland is talented enough to beat them if they're galvanized by this.

Greed will kill this once grand lady.

Whose idea was it to open the portal before the season is over? I get it in football, due to the semester change, but that's crazy. I don't blame Pippen for looking for the best option for him, but certainly it isn't good for the team to have this distraction during the S16.

On the other hand, why couldn't he wait until next week to get in the portal? Will be miss out on an opportunity by delaying a week?

Yep...sucks. It needs some smart people, that can also heavily benefit financially from leading the efforts, to take the mantle and work on solutions that make sense.

I know this sounds ridiculous on its face...but I'm thinking of someone like Jay Bilas, becoming NCAA basketball's "commissioner". We know he values all the great things NCAA basketball has been. But he's a smart guy, and has been on the forefront championing some of these new dynamics.

Pay him many millions a year, to lead efforts to get Rev Share, NIL, Portal and Transfer rules, Coaching changes rules, etc... under control.

I actually like that idea.

There are holes... and I'm sure many will be wary of him favoring the ACC and/or Duke specifically...but overall, he'd be an example of the type that I think would give it the best chance at success. Someone that would work to blend as many of the great things NCAA basketball has been throughout the years...with the new, unavoidable, and past due factors and dynamics.

Like many other big things in our world right now... we're whiplash overreacting, and everyone's worst tendencies are fair game, and its going to end up ruining the entire thing. Just need some guard rails.

I'm guessing he is leaving because it will be alot easier playing in the big east. Also more money for NIL not going to football.

There was speculation Willard was getting fired or at least on the hot seat last season.

That was a big reason why I thought IU had an inside track on Queen. Before he lost 30/40 lbs last off-season, Queen wasn't looking like a one and done to my eye watching Montverde tape.

I had the same impression of DQ, admittedly in very limited watching.
