It's RHP Seti Manase on the mound for IU with an ERA of 1.78 in 30.1. Serruto is again behind the plate with Mathison as the DH. The batting lineup is the same, and with rotation of Jessee and Colopy, it's Jessee in the lineup.

For the Terps, it's RHP Nick Dean with an ERA of 5.04 in 44.2 IP.

It's around 55 degrees at game time with the chance of rain practically nil. The wind is NW at 7 mph.

1st Inning:

T1st:

The Terps have big home run hitters in the first four spots of their lineup with Shliger with 10 HRs, Shaw with 15 HRs, Lorusso with 15 HRs, and Petrutz with 10 HRs.

Manase got the leadoff hitter on a deep flyout.

Manase then gave up back-to-back homers to Shaw and Lorusso to make it 2-0 Maryland and those two players now have 16 homers each on the season.

The next batter doubled with one out and the Terps are seeing Manase well.

Manase then threw a WP to move the runner to 3rd and one out.

A SF scored the runner at 3rd with two outs and it's 3-0.

Manase then gave up a two-out walk. Manase got a K to retire the side with the WP costing us a run.

B1st:

Glasser popped up to SS to lead off. Whalen then K'd looking for the 2nd out.

Taylor got a two-out single. A Tibbitts GO ended the inning.

Maryland is going to hit IU pitching hard because they do that to everyone. However, getting shutout at the plate by a team that has shutout no one at the dish is going to get them swept right out of the series. Don’t come crying to me when it happens. Maybe it will finally teach everyone that Mercer is not a great coach and struggles to mange against good teams with good coaches.

I give Mercer credit for taking Manase out quickly when he realized he didn’t have it. Next time realize in the first place that throwing a guy who is prone to giving up home runs against the best power team in the country may not me best idea.

Mercer is getting better at correcting mistakes recently which is an improvement. Now don’t make them in first place.

T2nd:

As expected, Manase's day was short and IU brought in RHP Brayden Risedorph with an ERA of 3.81 in 28.1 IP.

It's the 8 thru 1 hitters up for the Terps.

Risedorph got the first two batters on swinging K's. A GO retired the side.

B2nd:

It's the 5 thru 7 hitters up with Mathison leading off.

Mathison walked to lead off.

Pyne then singled to put runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs and Cerny up.

Cerny and Jesse both K'd swinging for two outs.

Serruto lined out to 3B and IU missed out on a big chance to chip away at that early lead.

first 2 guys get on and the next 2 can't put the ball in play. Disappointing. Definitely not the start I was hoping for.

3rd Inning:

T3rd:

Risedorph faced the two big hitters to lead off with the 2-4 batters up.

Risedorph walked the lead off man. Risedorph then got the next batter on a pop up to shallow CF for the 1st out and a man still at 1st.

Another pop up to RF resulted in the 2nd out. Glasser made a good diving catch of a liner to retire the side and Risedorph got through the toughest part of the lineup with just the leadoff walk.

B3rd:

It's the top of the order up and IU went down in order to end the inning.

Really nice to know we have found yet another struggling pitcher we can turn into Nolan Ryan. Mr. Hitting guy Mercer has to stop making his players make every mediocre pitcher look like elite. It is a HUGE issue that has reoccured in his entire tenure and he has not fixed it.

You can’t beat Maryland if you can’t score and only Mercer could figure out a way to have his offense shut down by a team that has been hit hard by everyone.

4th Inning:

T4th:

Risedorph was back out there to face the 4-6 hitters and he got the leadoff man on a pop up to CF.

Then next hitter reached on an infield hit with one out.

Risedorph then K'd the next two batters to retire the side and he has really settled things down for IU and has given up just a walk and an infield hit so far.

B4th:

It's the 4-6 hitters up. The Terps' Dean has given up 19 XBHs this season to include eight homers so he can be hit, but so far IU hasn't got to him yet.

Tibbitts flied out to lead off. Mathison then clubbed a solo homer to make it 3-1 with one out.

Pyne grounded out and Cerny popped out to retire the side.

Mercer still doesn’t know when to remove a struggling pitcher and now the game is over. He regretted it at Ball St and does the same thing again. Unbelievable.

When will you guys realize he is not a good manager.

Statistically speaking… 8-0 win streak bound to be broken also considering how we almost concede Fridays because we have one starter. I hope our bats can come alive but so far we’re helping Dean look good. Doesn’t bode real well for Savacool being saved for Sunday. We’ll see if the team can adjust and rebound this evening and the rest of the weekend

I have a bigger problem with the fact that a guy with an ERA over 5 going into the game is owning us, other than Carter's HR. Especially in such a big a series.
Well we know Mercer’s teams have a pension to make mediocre starters look great. With that said Dean has looked pretty good lately after struggling early.

There is a reason IU struggles in openers and thrives in other games. A deep pitching staff without an ace will make that happen every time. Its not an accident.

5th Inning:

T5th:

Risedorph was back out there to face the dangerous part of the order with the top of the order up.

The leadoff hitter reached on a walk. A bloop single that fell in no-man's land put runners on 1st and 2nd and no outs.

Another single that landed in front of Taylor loaded the bases with no outs.

A SF scored the runners from 3rd to make it 4-1 with the runners on the corners and one out.

A SAC bunt scored another run with the batter reaching 1st and runners on the corners with one out and it being 5-1.

Risedorph then hit back-to-back batters to first load the bases again and then score another run.

Another single scored two runs with runners on 1st and 2nd and one out. A double scored another run to make it 9-1 and one out.

After Risedorph seemed to be cruising, things fell apart in this inning and his day was over with runners on 2nd and 3rd and one out. It's 9-1 and IU has probably played their way out of this game.

IU brought in RHP Wes Burton with an ERA of 2.70 in 10 IP, and he will face the dangerous top of the order.

A deep flyout to the wall in CF scored another run. Another flyout retired the side.

B5th:

Three K's surrounded a Serruto single ended the inning.

Depends which Savacool you get. He is either really good or really bad. Dean has been strong lately. Series will most likely come down to which Savacool shows up Sunday likely.

6th Inning:

T6th:

Burton put them down in order.

B6th:

It was the 3-5 hitters up for IU and they went down in order. Nick Dean doesn't have that great of pitching numbers and he came into this game with an ERA of just over 5.00 and he has given up 20 extra base hits on the season to include Mathison's homer today, yet he is handling IU like Sandy Koufax in his prime.

7th Inning:

T7th:

Burton faced the 6-8 hitters. Burton got the first two hitters on a ground out and a flyout.

Burton then walked two staight hitters to put runners on 1st and 2nd with two outs and Mercer pulled him with the top of the order up.

IU brought in LHP Nathan Ball with an ERA of 13.50 in 4.2 IP to face the top of the order. With the score the way it is, you are not going to see any pitchers by IU in this game that might be needed for the last two games of the series.

Ball walked the first batter he faced to load the bases with two outs.

A WP scored the runner from 3rd to make it 11-1 with two outs and runners on 2nd and 3rd, and IU has given up a run after getting the first two outs of the inning. A flyout retired the side.

B7th:

It's the 6 thru 8 hitters up and Pyne K'd to lead off.

Cerny then homered to LF to make it 11-2.

Jessee lined out for the 2nd out and Serruto fouled out to end the inning.

UMD 11 IU 2

8th Inning:

T8th:

It's the 3-5 hitters up for the Terps. RHP Cooper Katskee came in for IU with an ERA of 7.84 in 16.1 IP.

The leadoff hitter singled and Katskee then got the next batter on a groundout with the runner reaching 2nd.

A ground out to the pitcher kept the runner at 2nd and two outs. A K retired the side with Langerman now behind the plate.

B8th:

It's the top of the order up with the Terps going to the bullpen to bring in LHP Logan Ott with an ERA of 6.60 in 30.1 IP and like with IU, the Terps are not going to bring in any of their effective relievers with the way the score is.

Glasser singled to leadoff. Whalen grounded out with Glasser taking 2nd.

Another GO by Taylor moved Glasser to 3rd with two outs.

Tibbitts grounded out to end the inning:

9th Inning:

T9th:

It's the bottom of the order up and IU brought in RHP Aydan Decker-Petty with an ERA of 2.79 in 9.2 IP.

D-P popped up the leadoff hitter for the first out, but then gave up a walk and a single to put runners on 1st and 2nd with one out.

With the top of the order up, D-P got a big K for the 2nd out.

With two outs, D-P gave up a double to Shaw to make it 13-2 with still two outs.

A ground out retired the side.

B9th:

It's the 5-7 hitters up with Mathison leading off.

Mathison then tripled to right CF to lead off.

Pyne popped up to RF with Mathison holding at 3rd.

Cerny K'd for the 2nd out.

Jessee was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners with two outs.

Langerman grounded out to end the game and a leadoff triple was wasted which pretty much summed up how this game went for IU.

It was a clunker of a game to start the series and there is no need to go through a lot of details on this game since IU used several back-end bullpen pitchers to finish out the game after it got away from them in the 5th. The Terps with the win fell into a tie with IU for first place in the conference. The Terps' Nick Dean had his best game of the season and went 7 IP, his longest outing of the season, with IU not doing much against him even though he didn't have great pitching numbers coming in.

IU won the first game of the OSU series to open the season and they have now lost the first game of every B1G series since then, but have won the following two games to win the series. Let's hope that pattern continues.

IU's team batting average for the game was 7 of 34 for .206 while the Terps were 12 of 35 for .393. As good as IU's hitting has been in the batting order, there's not a team in the B1G that has the power that the Terps have in the top four hitters of the order and they had a total of 50 homers combined coming into this game and they battered Manase at the start of the game. IU had just one multi-hit player in Mathison. Here are some of the stats:

Mathison: 2 for 3 with a triple and homer, 1 RBI, and 1 run scored.
Cerny 1 for 4 with a homer, 1 RBI, and 1 run scored.
Serruto was 1 for 3.

There were no errors in the game.

IU used six pitchers and the best stretch of the lot was when Risedorph breezed through innings 2 thru 4, and he put them down in order in the 2nd, gave up just a walk in the 3rd, and a harmless single in the 4th. Risedorph then totally fell apart in the 5th in a decisive 7-run inning for the Terps. It's just a gut feeling but we may have seen the last of Manase in the starting rotation with him falling into that group of middle relievers. Just who might replace him would take a little bit of thought and maybe I'm all wet on this.

Here are the pitching numbers.

Manase: 1.0 IP, 3 hits with two homers and a double, 3 runs all earned, 1 K, 1 BB, and 1 WP.
Risedorph: 3.1 IP, 6 hits to include a double, 7 runs all earned, 4 Ks, 2 BBs, and 2 hit batters.
Burton: 2.1 IP, no hits, 1 run which was earned, 2 Ks, and 2 BBs.
Ball: 0.1 IP, no hits or runs, 1 BB, and 1 WP.
Katskee: 1.0 IP, 1 hit, and 1 K.
Decker-Petty: 1.0 IP, 2 hits, 2 runs both earned, 1 K, and 1 BB.
