MAGA Coalition Falling Apart

Didn't even make it to the inauguration .

Vivek and Elon being relentlessly attacked for supporting H1B visas for Silicon Valley.

Laura Loomer 'demonetized' by X after criticizing Elon.

You misspelled "MAGA GOP contains diversity of thought while Unithink/Cancel Culture continues to poison the Dimocrats. MiddleAmerica watching closely."

Normally, that’s what would happen.

But I prefer them doing it in public. Strongly prefer it, really. After all, they’re discussing public policy, not private policy.

Craze, from the standpoint of we the people openly listening to the policy makers in the Executive branch offering their opinions on polcies being formulated it is definitely interesting.

When Congress does this as per televised committee meetings it is called watching sausage being made. In other words, it is messy.

Congress as an institution has been losing the trust of we the people, so watching sausage being made may be part of the problem.

Is the Trump administration with leaders offering opinions
openly as polices are being formed an admirable approach to policy formulation, or is like sausage being made. In other words, will it work to gain the confidence of we the people?

Check out the GS pay scale. The average federal worker is GS11, but most entry positions are GS1-GS7 and if the person has the right skills and education they'll usually start between 8 and 12. They're not making the big bucks.

My daughter might need one of those down the road. We’re driving to the mall and this is the convo. She was at the rec center with friends last night.

Dad. Remember that boy max that was like my best friend in first and second grade?
No.
Well I literally saw him last night hahahaha!!! Then paused and goes. I don’t know if it was him though

You must be conflicted. Republicans and even most Democrats oppose illegal immigration. Most of us support legal immigration. A significant portion of MAGA is opposed to all immigration, including those on H1B visas, which is temporary. It’s going to be a GOP/MAGA point of conflict.
I’ve always supported legal immigration.

Amen to that. Democrats seem all together befuddled and gleeful that a political party would have open policy disagreements amongst itself in public. That’s an indictment on them.

100% agree with this. Though I don't know enough to agree that the alleged "shortages" are anything but a low pay ruse. On the medical front it does appear that there are shortages.

I think the reshoring strategy is stupidity at its finest. We are going to start competing with Vietnam and Bangladesh for manufacturing widgets and t-shirts? I want free trade and a low labor supply. And let's outcompete on the high tech side and raise wages. But our corporate overlords won't agree.

Here's a link on the engineering shortages. Anyone that competes for engineering talent knows there is a supply and demand imbalance.

I'm not sure I agree with the data and premise around software engineering being the largest gap. Part of the problem is that new engineering demands are not the same as they were for Baby Boomers - there is a much higher technology component. On top of that, fields like computer science and software / data engineering can pay much more and lure away talent beginning in college from other segments of the field. I have yet to talk to a single exec in high value manufacturing that sees an oversupply in materials, A&D or chemical engineering - but maybe I'm missing something.

Part of the thesis around reshoring is specifically around automation and capabilities. To your point, we shouldn't be making widgets and commodity products (e.g., birthday party favors, cheap toys, plastic silverware, etc.). That being said, there have been some major advancements in robotics and automation that enable US manufacturers to make high volume, lower $ production at reasonable profitability. An example would be catheter manufacturing.

No.

The government shouldn’t be designing those policies is the answer.

I agree, which is why a debt based monetary system is not compatible with capitalism. We’re living in a control system that will only continue to centralize as things get worse. People will incorrectly diagnose the problem and will vote for their own demise, more government. It’s why Europe is a shit show now.

The answer is separation of state from money, which would allow for benefits of free markets to flow to everyone. The natural state of a free market is deflation. All we have to do is let it happen.
The Separation of Church and State and now The Separation of Money and State.

I like it. It's a nice turn of phrase and takes advantage of already entrenched cultural mores.

Some general questions (not really directed at you, toastedbread, but to all):

Should the government be setting policies based on what "we" want to compete for and even worry about raising wages in any sector over another?

If we design policies to undercut lower class wages and jobs but increase higher skilled or higher class wages, how do we think a majority of people are going to react?

Many times, I think people assume that the majority of people can just become "more educated" or make different career/job choices, without realizing that the vast majority of people are operating with real constraints--IQ, family situations, valuing their home so don't want to move, etc.
Agreed but the low level manufacturing is just an unwinnable race to the bottom.
I’ve always supported legal immigration.
You've hitched your saddle to the wrong horse. Full throated endorsement from DJT on H1B. No shock there as he recently endorsed stapling green cards to community college grads. I don't agree with CIS on everything, but they are often on the mark.

I was mainly commenting on the AI side of the house. Every single foreign PHD and MS grad attempts to work in data science.

Again though isn't it a question of supply and demand? For the right wage even in the fields you mention there will be no shortage? We are merely protecting profits by importing cheaper workers.

Good for you.
I don't think I've met anyone who supports illegal migration. The question is what limits belong on legal immigration. Personally, I would give almost citizenship on arrival to leading scientific researchers. E.g multiple patents. MIT PhD grads in the hard sciences. The current system is perverse. Even the O visa is no longer for Einsteins. There is major abuse across the board. Our resources are depleting rapidly due to climate change and the country is full.

Edit: I would also like to see a number of additional steps such as an official language, and a required competency test for any incoming immigrant. Ballots must only be cast in English.

As usual, hoot, you make a compelling argument.

I’ll have to give it some thought. And what you’re saying is definitely food for it.

We ate at a Chinese place for lunch today and the two girls that helped us were named Tina and Wendy who both spoke very broken English.
It’s pretty standard nowadays for Chinese immigrants to take on an American name, at least the women. My 8 year old son’s best friend, Luke, is Chinese (he was born in the U.S.) and his mother, who immigrated, goes by Maggie. At my son’s school it seems like the Chinese fathers keep their given name and the wives take an American sounding name.

Craze,appreciate your kind remarks.

Offered my observations about Trump and his team maintaining public support is part of my hoping his team is successful.

Just because they don't necessarily follow my game plan doesn't mean I want them to fail.

Heck, having Trump, Musk. and Ramaswamy all calling the plays in the huddle may be just what we need.
