Didn't even make it to the inauguration .

Vivek and Elon being relentlessly attacked for supporting H1B visas for Silicon Valley.

Laura Loomer 'demonetized' by X after criticizing Elon.

I see it as a healthy debate to be having as they construct proposed reforms to immigration policy.

Count me on the side of the tech bros -- just as any company should want the best people, so should a country. And it doesn't matter where they come from. If they don't put their skills to use here, they'll put them to use somewhere....and we may not like that somewhere.

Legal immigration is a good thing. It's the illegal immigration we need to get under control.

Amazing how badly people want this approach to fail, but you’re spot on.

Steve Bannon and the MAGA army doesn't agree.

So now we've got Musk opining that Americans are "too retarded" for skilled jobs, and Ramaswamy is railing against "American culture."

The oligarchy is getting off to a rough start.
The wheels will really come off when Trump lashes out at Musk because he’s tired of hearing all the comments about Musk being the defacto president.

That is 100% coming.

Where's @toastedbread

He's had some pretty strong opinions about H1B

Also I don't for a second buy into the argument that this is all about the very best and brightest engineering minds in the world. That would amount to a very small % of the H1B visas. The reality is tech companies want people that will work basically non-stop for less cost than domestic hires.

The tech industry has laid off hundreds of thousands of people over the last 2-3 years in cost cutting measures.

It's not really that amazing. Every incoming administration has some people cheering from the visitors bleachers.

Here's the thing: when two groups with similar and related (but not identical) goals have a common objective, they will usually set aside their differences while pursuing that objective.

Once it's achieved, then those differences will reemerge...because both sides are naturally going to be angling for having the upper hand on matters where they disagree. And that's what we're seeing happen here.

MAGA and DOGE (for lack of a better team term) were always obviously very odd bed fellows. Not sure what a white working class movement has in common with the billionaire tech bros and aggressively cutting govt spending.

You are thinking exactly like a democrat that prays for failure so the status quo is maintained. The working class (to hell with your white word!) are very well understood about inefficiency as well as how the (possibly) very well intended, lets say planned, inefficiency in the swamp kills them. Maga will help Working class just as it did 16'-20'. But this time it very well may be on a force multiplier due to experience.
I envision those who prefer to have Swamp ass rouge on their nose, are not going to be happy for the next 4-8+ years. You all screwed us for the last time. ... I hope.

Bunch of f*****g dumbasses voted for this. So did the people who didn’t vote, or made some conscience vote. Enjoy your conscience, dickheads.

Yes. And with fragile visa status hanging over their heads.
Aren’t most those tech employees working abroad? Foreigners? My edibles bud went from Anderson to peoplesoft to oracle to Accenture. His people were always in India. He’d be on site here dealing with them in India at all hours

We have offshored a lot of programming to save money. To me it makes little sense to lower programming wages with these visas, at the same point kick out migrant farm laborers and animal processing plant labor. Simply put, Americans largely do not want to work ripping carcasses apart and we certainly do not want to pay more for our meat to hire Americans. But it is the brave new world we are heading into

So these programmers. Are they Indians contracting with oracle etc or are they Americans shipped over there?

Offshoring and visas are not the same thing. Much of the service functions performed offshore are first on the list to be replaced by AI in the short term anyway.

The Tech bros are correct in that we need to do everything possible to collect and keep top talent. But as has been pointed out in this thread, that’s not who the vast majority of H1B’s go to. To the extent Americans are being replaced by top flight engineers on visas from abroad, I really have a hard time believing it’s simply a cost cutting measure. It seems to me that MAGA is looking for their own form of affirmative action, which is something Vivek warned about even preceding the election.

Where we might find agreement is that offshore developers largely suck and aren’t worth the cost savings. My companies developers and programmers are largely offshore and I think it hurts us. For crying out loud we’re based in Atlanta. Go down to Georgia Tech and drop major pay packages to a few dozen of their best engineers every class and the ROI would far surpass what we see now.

Well, neither like excessive government intervention and control, for starters.

Nothing more fun than trying to solve a tech problem over the phone with someone who has a heavy Indian accent. It is a horrible customer service experience.

Musk said he looked at Harris v. Trump, determined Trump would be better and so campaigned for him. That doesn't make him MAGA. I look at what he's trying to do now is influence Trump away from some of the more populist, anti-business sentiments in the MAGA movement and towards Musk's view of what a pro-biz regime should be.

Damn, how I hated Hewlett-Packard’s “customer service.”

“I don’t want to see a single piece of equipment in here from hp. I will pick it up and toss it in the dumpster.”

Still pisses me off if I see anything from those awful POSs if I’m in a business or store.

I think Elon’s fighting a losing battle here. The Kid Down the Hall gave me the Latin term for it. If he gets off the damn phone with his accountant I’ll see if I can get it from him.

Government is a business. Elon should know how to improve the customer service and how to make it easier for private sector to innovate. He needs to stick to that stuff.
