Archie is likely not not done for 2019 class even with a small number of options open. I could see his focus changing away from freshman and looking for the best available grad transfers that can help bolster our practice squad and provide experience in the locker room. I would not expect a game changing player at this point.

I've said before that the 11 we expect to be on scholarship are almost all expected to have a shot to play. Anderson and Franklin would possibly be at the end of the bench now, but that can change.

I am interested in the preferred walk on players and other late additions that we haven't heard about. It is important to have smart walk on players that can run an opposing team's offense or show defensive looks that our rotation players will face. They come in knowing they aren't likely to play and don't complain like the 12th and 13th scholarship player might do. They don't get the credit they deserve. Have we heard about any walk on players?

agreed! hoping there is a grad transfer out there with some size and a decent 3 point shot...along with a good sense of smart ball (Max Bielfeldt version 2.0 is needed badly....not Fitz 2.0).

Curious why why you think Franklin would be "at the end of the bench". He probably won't start, but between lack of guard depth and his abilities, I'd say he will be getting min. Right now, I'd pencil in Green at SG with him being the primary backup. Now, if Anderson can make a jump in the offseason, might not need to add any numbers. That said, we really could use a consistent/experienced 2, but with the upgrade in size, things could open a big more for the guys we have.

I think he says that because Franklin is not ranked high and will be an uproven frosh just like Anderson was last year. It all depends on how he handles the speed of the game.

Don’t count on another grad transfer. IU foolishly makes it difficult to admit one.

I would love to get another grad transfer. Would really help next years squad and won’t take up 4 years of scholarship. Let’s give it to a guy that’s already developed and can play at this level.

They do?

You have something that documents this?

What he is saying is we don't do special admissions like other schools do. I'm going off memory here, but I believe the kids have to carry a 3.0 GPA (I could be making that up but I heard that somewhere). We don't do like high school admissions where we will let special admissions in.

Exactly, what are you relying on for your observation? Does IU have standards that are different from what the NCAA requires, or what?

Exactly.

I'm not denying IU doesn't have stricter guidelines. They very well indeed might. But if they do, it ought to be easy to provide said guidelines, right?

The only incoming walk-on I know of is Nathan Childress of Zionsville. 6'6", 205 lb forward.

I don't really know much more about him.

I have asked for a link more than once and still have seen NOTHING to validate this assertion.

Maybe you will have more luck.

I don't know if it's premium content or not but on the 247 site, weaver does a interview where he talks with CTA about this very subject and coach Allen addresses this very issue.

Obviously if it's premium, I can't link it, but if it's not, it's the second to last question question to the very bottom.

If IU has different rules that the rest of college athletics then it needs to be changed.

Thanks

This was posted on Bleacher Report ... if it violates the rules of this website I apologize and understand why it needs to be taken down.

CTA paints a clear picture as to why post-grad/juco recruiting is difficult at IU ... however, he owns it and turns it into a selling point for the kids that do qualify. On a side note, as an IU alum I appreciate my universities’ standards, it makes my degrees that much more valuable.

That was one of the best CTA interviews I’ve ever heard or read. He’s getting better by the day.

It is not that IU has a different set of rules, it is that they do not change the rules for athletic transfers. Basically, not getting into a grad program with a sub 3.0 GPA and not getting in as a JUCO if you did not qualify out of HS.

I'm thinking Archie is done with 2019. Feels like he turned the page a couple weeks ago when he either learned or figured out LQ and Morton were not coming. He immediately started focusing on 2020 and making offers.

There does not appear to be much left out there as a grad transfer. I suppose I wouldn't be shocked if he added one, but the odds of finding an impact player at this point seems very long.

Morton is a 2020 kid.

I agree. There could be a last minute transfer come available, or a kid at a lower level program transfer to IU and walk on.

TJD, Brunk and Franklin are good additions for next year. I suppose we can add Hunter to the additions assuming he is healthy. That would be a pretty good recruiting class if all 4 were evaluated as a single class. Thompson will be in his 3rd season and hopefully be ready to contribute with a healthy summer and start to the season.

My only concern is if we start having early injuries and players missing practices leading up to the start of the season. We need all 11 this year. We need Anderson ready to play and Hunter to be able to play without concerns over his health.

Franklin was ranked higher in HS than Green, and has a high BB IQ as a Freshman.

Realistically, it might not be until more like 2022 or even 2023 when Miller’s own recruiting classes start to graduate. Athletic Director Fred Glass called this thing a “serious rebuild,” and that is probably how much time Miller will need to complete that kind of job.

IU will not get consistently better until Crean's players have graduated and moved on.

Anderson, Hunter, Race, Brunk, TJD, Franklin will be a big key to the upcoming season. They need to move into the rotation and contribute.

The issue isn't "Crean's" players. It was Tom Crean coaching those players. We're heading into Archie's 3rd year. They're his players. Also, I'm glad Al Durham, De'ron Davis, Justin Smith, and Devote Green are going to be on the team, next year. 3 of those guys will most likely be starters.

Hooray - we agree on something!!

Without question, anyone on the roster after last season is totally on Miller. Smith at times could drive you nuts with his lapses on defense; same thing with Devonte all too often trying to hit "home runs" instead of just making the simple play. But if you're going to keep them on roster going forward, it's on you to coach them up OR bench their a$$ if they aren't doing what needs to be done.

I really hope both guys buy in and play how they're capable. Could be the difference in how good this coming year turns out.

I'm still holding out hope that Green's lapses can be corrected. He has a golden opp next year and does seem like a kid who has the fire inside to drive him. Smith is another issue...loaded with natural ability but plays like he just rolled out of bed sometimes. And I agree with the other poster re: Anderson....hoping he really makes progress over the summer, but saw little this past season to hang any hopes on a major improvement. I think the keys will be Rob P getting consistent with his 3pt shot, TJD's transition to college ball, and Davis healthy and able to play 20 min/game. And Hunter's status, which might be the biggest of them all (and the biggest question still).

Possibly 2, DeRon and Green.
I don't see Smith starting if Hunter and DeRon are healthy.

I agree 2 is more likely. I forgot about Hunter. If Hunter is healthy, I think he starts and Green comes off the bench.

I have more faith in Anderson making shots than Smith.
