Looking For Crowd Song?

You don't start any traditions without student section buy-in, they are the heart of a football stadium. The students aren't going to engage with Boomer rock from the 60s-80s.

The easiest answer is that we already have a tradition that all of the fans know and participate in (William Tell Overture timeout). Just duplicate it on the football field. Nothing wrong with bringing 55k to their feet, clapping in unison, singing the fight song together.

If you want a song, Swag Surfin is what you should do. They played it at the Nebraska game I was at this year, but in typical IU athletic department fashion, the execution was so horrendous that it fell on its face.

You can't just play a song and expect people to start singing. You set this up ahead of time. Post a short video on socials saying "end of 3rd quarter, Purdue game", have the song "Swag Surfin" playing in the background, and people will get the message. Or do literally any communication to the students as they're walking into the game.

During the game, operations needs to do their part and lead into it. There needs to be a hype video (or just do the William Tell Overture timeout), giving the students a signal that "oh we're going to do Swag Surfin now", then when the song starts blasting, you need to re-enforce the positive behavior by putting the students who are surfing on the video board.

Have people videotape the students doing it, share it on socials, and the tradition stays.

Auburn does it perfectly. They play a hype video for ~2 minutes, then pan to the students who are surfing. The band does it, the cheerleaders do it, the lead in is perfect.

I think the guitar into to 'Stranglehold' would be epic.

I still find it hard to believe Uncle Ted never did drugs. I mean, what the hell was "Journey to the Center of Your Mind" about then?
The first OSU game I went to was when I was 11. They played Purdue and OSU scored late in the 4th quarter to force OT. It was a cold and rainy November day (late afternoon) and almost eerie with a mist and fog. As the two teams waited for OT they started playing “Stranglehold”. The crowd really got rowdy and it was almost deafening inside the shoe. I’ve been to my fair share of games there but that was probably the loudest I ever heard it. OSU won in OT. I believe Kyle Orton was Purdue’s QB that day. Wild scene for sure.

Maybe we're making this too complicated - bring out Martha the Mop Lady sometime late in the game.
I don't like it as far as a hype thing goes. But I think you're on to the seed of a great idea.

Our in-game promo activities are pretty bad, especially compared to other B1G stadiums I've been to.

Let's parlay the mop lady & borrow from successful promotions elsewhere.

Concept: The IU version of Beat the Freeze or where Illinois has a 77 yard race against Red Grange
  • Have a female sprinter (can be an actual track athlete or one that was a high level sprinter in HS)
    • If we REALLY want to have a ringer, have an elite male sprinter in drag.
  • Dress her/him up as the mop lady, complete with frumpy padding to really sell it
  • Pick a fan to challenge the mop lady to some distance. 40 yards, 60 yards, 76 yards if we want to incorporate more of a basketball connection to the last perfect season. Whatever.
  • The pot for winning is progressive. It grows with every mop lady victory until the winner "really cleans up"

Not a "sing along" song, but I love hearing the beginning of Led Zep's "Immigrant Song" and the first two lines:
"Ah-ah-ah-ah!
Ah-ah-ah-ah!"
Would be a cool "marching down the field" and picking up a first down thing. I like the one the IU band uses now, but liked the longer version before. Just a thought🤔 Don't shoot me, I'm only the Piano Player!🤣

I saw another team use it and kind of like the Apache song that used to play at AH and there are motions to it. I’m jealous of Wisconsin. Did you see all the Oregon players dancing to Jump Around? We need something!
Jumping around is so cringe.
