Watching Tucker DeVries pull up from 25' plus, had me having a discussion with some buddies about long distance shooters, and I really struggle to remember any like that at IU. Yes, Blackmon, Gordon and Alford were great shooters, but I don't really recall any former Hoosiers who pulled up from that deep, ala Chris Kingsbury or Steph Curry. What Hoosiers and Big 10ers do you remember that would pull the trigger from a foot or more behind the 3 pt line? Seems like we had the 3 on an experimental basis for Wittman and Kitchel for a year, but I don't remember either of them letting it fly from deep. Seems like I heard that Jimmy Rayl would let it fly from 25' which seems crazy when there was no 3. Non-Hoosiers, Rick Mount (I heard) and on the womens side Caitlyn Clark would pull the trigger from deep. I've told this many times, but I did play against Joe Hillman a couple times at the HPER and I'd never had to guard anyone so far out on the floor, but I would guess he was shooting from 22'.

He is literally on the staff. Do you not remember hulls?

Deep enough for ya?

I mean guys that regularly pulled up a few feet behind the 3pt line. I thought Yogi was a good shooter, but don't think of him in the top tier of great shooters and don't remember him pulling up regularly from 25'

Define regularly? 10% of makes? 15, 20, 25%?

Wittman had more limited range than Kitchel, he was usually inches behind the line that year they had the three. He was smart. Kitchell was the best shooter I ever saw. Maybe not by stats or technique, but when he was 'feelin' it' wow. Saw him use glass from outside the three line once at a bad angle and there was no doubt it was intentional.
Jay Edwards was fun to watch. Smooth and with range.
Not really answering the question, I think some of the more recent guys mentioned above had range. But yeah, seems like some of our opponents in the past have the deep elite bomber more than we have.

regularly enough that I think if him when I think of bombers. To me guys are listing great 3 pt shooters (Coverdale, Edwards), but my memory of those guys isn't pulling up 3' behind the line. Regularly? I'd guess 20-25% being deep enough that it makes you take notice.

Then I would say Gordon. I recall him consistently taking NBA level 3's. Off the bounce and the catch. I recall Blackmon consistently taking them but not making them. Not like Gordon

Jay Edwards! Tom Coverdale!
Coverdale? 😂

Jay Edwards was the best long distance shooter in IU history. Those of us who are old enough to remember him know that nobody in college basketball could contain him from the outside. He could sink a last second shot from 30 feet with a guys hand in his face. The guy was unconscious from outside, especially with the game on the line.

biefeldt too.....crean could spot them

wasn't always so sure what to do with them
Copy that. My stance with Crean is, he was really good at doing what he did. Great offensive teams. But once a team threw a wrinkle in his game plan, we were completely clueless on what to do. Ugh. I don’t miss Crean at all but when his offense was rolling it really was something to watch.

Edward’s actually had RMK jump up and down.

Edward's won several games for us with clutch jumpers in 89'. The shot he hit against Illinois gets forgotten, but he was floating behind the backboard from 15ft, an impossible angle. Then Nick fn Anderson hit a 35ft turnaround.......

On multiple occasions I saw him hit contested jumpers, get fouled and on his way to the line yawn. He was never rattled. My favorite Hoosier.

Coverdale in the ND game at Notre Dame was fun for sure. You could tell Brey didn’t know what Coverdale could do.

Syracuse playing zone was a wrinkle? Maybe one from old age!

I was a sophomore in high school and when he decided to go pro, I read the Indianapolis Star every morning waiting for the headline that Jay Edwards would return to IU. I was very naive. Sad face.

IIRC, that was the game winning 3 to beat Michigan. Lyndon Jones had the ball near the top of the key dribbling away the last seconds, then flipped it back to Jay who put up a 28 footer. Nothing but net and a true buzzer beater. Knight was jubilant, jumping up and down because it was a Bill Frieder coached team. Knight hated Frieder.

Lyndon got tons of credit for that 'assist' where he finally tossed it to Jay far too late. Jay had time to instantly shoot, barely. Oh well, it worked, and was very sweet! Bobby ran straight off the court right? No handshakes?

Carsen Edwards NCAA Tournament run was one of the best ever, PERIOD! His range was unbelievable.

The 3 against Michigan? lol That was a great moment. They kept showing it over and over to see if he got the shot off in time. The rule was the horn meant the game was over so the ball left his hand before the horn. That whole year was fun. My uncle who passed away a number of years ago told me that was Knight's best coaching job.

Eric Gordon had this kind of range.
