Shelstead is a tough cover. But yeah, he’s had some uncharacteristic breakdowns for sure.

He should have jumped him there for sure. But if he had and had been called for a foul you’d have said the same things about Leal.

glad he got a hand up at the end that had zero effect on the splash. How about this fact, the ball didn't hit the rim. We can't win with Leal, tonight was a perfect example. He had multiple bad defensive plays, costly plays, and his good plays did not out weigh the bad ones. Good teams expose us with Leal.
For most of that game, he shut down one of the top 2-3 guards in the conference. It took a bullshit 35 foot “splash” for him to get in to double figures.

For most of the game, they all played pretty good D. Leal had a couple defensive breakdowns the first few minutes, but was great the rest of the game. Goode struggled with Evans a couple times, Bamba a couple times, but those are some dudes…At some point their gonna use their size and athleticism. For the most part though, I thought our defense was really good. Even when we had the two big lineup out there.
The foul line is where we lost it. Outscored by 16.

First time I've seen Oregon and they are a tough team physically. Athletes at every position. Sure look like they should be competing for the conference title.
Because Reanu and Mbako have a world of talent and many of their mistakes appear to be effort and correctable through good smart play. Leal is punching above his class and making himself valuable with effort and limited physical ability. There's an old adage about "beware the man who is born on 3rd base and takes credit for hitting a triple!". Athletically, Mbako and Reanu were born on third base. Leal got hit by a pitch and stole 2nd and 3rd. That matters to most people.
Most everything cav says makes him sound like a dumbass but that's why we find him amusing.

No, no one wants that. Ultimately all this comes back to your love and support for XJ, and it chaps your ass that folks forgive Leal for his shortcomings and not XJ in your eyes. You just can't accept that you were wrong there too.
I promise you lots of people want that. X wasn’t very good, lot do to injury. I am guessing many would want to play Leal over X last year. X and Leal are about as different as can be. X isn’t as crafty as to try to fake a nut kick though, he would just do it.
Now that Leal is actually playing minutes it is clear as day that he is a glue guy that needs help from the refs to make an impact. I hate those guys in college bball.

No one "wants" Leal playing, but we do want to see his effort exhibited by all our players, and since they don't, he's getting support because he has, and it has helped. We've won more with him playing more minutes, even if his effort is muted because he's not this caliber of athlete. Still, his communication and effort, helps other players play better. Conversely, Mbako's lack of it....
No one worth listening to wants that. You speak in absolutes. Leal...without question...100%...could be a contributing, main rotation player, for a national championship level team. It just couldn't be a team filled with a bunch of players similar to Leal...obviously. To be a legit Natty contender, you need dudes...Leal is not a dude. But he he's a damn good overall basketball player that plays complimentary basketball, communicates well, is nearly always in the right spots, and is now showing himself to be an upper tier perimeter defender. As long as I have other guys that are NBA level talent, that I can run offenses for and through...having Leal out there to lock down a guy like Shelstead... that's gonna help me win a lot of basketball games.
Your focus on him is weird. The problem is Woodson... and then Woodson not being able to pick and/or land the right kind of elite talent...and then obviously not knowing how to coach them when they get here. Leal probably does more coaching on this team than Woodson does.
I want Leal playing. I just want better players on the court with him, and a better coach and system for him to play in.
stopped reading after this. Find me one guy in the last decade on a championship team that is similar to Leal. Then I’ll start listening.

You're too far down the path on this one to even understand it. And you've made it abundantly clear with your posting history you have zero clue what it takes to build a winning team, and a winning culture.
Not ALL Natty teams have them...but there are TONS of successful college teams that have guys like Leal in their main rotations.
"Similar" to Leal...
2024 UConn team...Hassan Diarra...main rotation guy that came in as a backcourt utility guy. Defensive pest. Shot 35% from the 3, had some impactful games with assists, didn't have many high scoring games.
2023 UConn team...Diarra...Naheim Alleyne... similar player and impact to Diarra. Not a great shooter. But active defensively, capable of making plays offensively.
2022 Kansas team...didn't really have anyone like him...but they played a VERY short bench that year.
2021 Baylor team... none of their guards were like him...
2019 Virginia team... Kehei Clark had a lot of siilarities. Not a scorer. Not an impactful athlete. Very good defensively. Very good facilitator and movement guy in their offense.
2018 Villanova team... Phil Booth kinda... Athletic defender... not a huge threat offensively.

Not one of the guys you've worshipped the last few years would have been willing, or capable, of guarding Shelstead last night how Leal did. And while all those guys couldn't possibly look more different, if you really think about how they play, and how they impact games, they're all similar. Defensive minded, limited offensively, good teammates, good cogs in the offense...

We shouldn't let Hot Sauce set the narrative on what Leal is. He won Indiana's Mr Basketball. He's 6-5. He's an above average athlete. He's potentially an all defensive team level defender. There are some things he is not...and he usually doesn't try to be those things. But there are a lot of things he is, that get overlooked...maybe because people think he's a small white kid??

No they wouldn’t. You need talent that can be coached. This team would soundly be in the tournament with a different coach, that would have played Leal 5-10 mins a game at most. It is a crime Tucker is on the bench because of the lack of coaching. Complete wasted year for him that he regressed.
