But I prefer 'bison', because other schools are the buffaloes. There are buffalo mascots. I am not aware of any called bison by the fans? It just sounds more unique, even a little badass.

Kinda why I like Buffalo. Sounds on the loose, wild and menacing. Bison sounds as if their territory is behind a fence on a farm. Not exciting.

Bison is a more descriptive name as Buffalo is used for Asian animals too. Bison is uniquely an American animal.
