It was a game where one team got the clutch hits in the few times they had scoring opportunities while the other team (IU) had multiple chances and mostly came up empty. When you have a player on 3rd and no outs and that player is left there, and then you had another situation where a runner was on 3rd with one out, and we couldn't bring him in, then we know why we lost. We have to look in the mirror and say we blew a big opportunity. It was still a very successful season with next season looking very promising also, but we need to strengthen our bullpen, and that was where UK had an edge in the regional.
We outhit UK 10-6 and we were 10 of 35 for a team average of .286 while UK was 6 of 29 for an average of .207. We had three players with a multi-hit game and here are some stats.
Glasser: 3 for 5 with an RBI and a run scored.
Whalen: 2 for 4 with a double, and an RBI.
Jessee: 2 for 3 and a run scored.
Taylor had a double on his lone hit.
Both teams had one error apiece.
Bothwell, after a shaky first inning, pitched really well and kept IU in the game until he started running out of gas in the 6th. Regardless of the four runs charged to Bothwell, IU got what they needed out of him against a team that hits the ball really well, but we just didn't give him any run support to speak of. Risedorph and Kraft pitched the final 2.2 innings and pitched well. Here are the pitching stats:
Bothwell: 5.1 IP, 3 hits which included 2 doubles, 4 runs all earned, 7 Ks, 3 BBs, and 1 hit batter.
Risedorph: 2.1 IP, 3 hits to include a double, no runs, 3 Ks, 1 BB, and the rest of his slate was clean.
Kraft: 0.1 IP, and Kraft faced just one batter and got a ground out to finish the 8th.
