Kentucky got a homer from the leadoff batter in the 1st to start the game. A ground out, walk, a flyout, and two more walks load the bases with two outs. A triple scored all three walks which is something all too familiar from the Troy series, and IU has themselves in a big hole already at 4-0 and we haven't even had a bat yet. A flyout ended the T1st. Kentucky's lineup is loaded with juniors and seniors with three juniors and six seniors, but I don't know how many are their normal starters. IU has a really serious problem with their pitching staff giving up free passes, and the walks seem to always find homeplate, at least lately.

In IU's 1st, Doanes led off with a double and Glasser then doubled to score Doanes, so IU is off to a good start offensively. A single by Whalen put runners on the corners with no outs. Ellis then hit a 395 ft 3-run homer to tie the game with no outs. Tibbetts grounded out, Pyne struck out, and Colopy flied out to end the inning with the game tied at 4-4.

Both pitchers have struggled in the 1st, Hayden with control problems and Logue simply got hit hard.

Well, we are in a real pitchers duel right now! VBG. I thought this one was over already but the Boys responded! Good to see the bats working this well this early. I'll take 4-4 after that top half of the inning.
Go Hoosiers!

In the 2nd, IU brought Ryan Kraft out of the bullpen to open the inning and he put them down in order.

In IU's 2nd, Mathison struck out to leadoff, but Jessee hit a homer to RF to give IU the lead at 5-4. Doanes was out on a bunt attempt for the 2nd out. A two-out double by Glasser, his 2nd double of the game already, put a man on 2nd; however, Whalen flied out to end the inning with IU up 5-4.

In the T3rd, Kraft got a K to start the inning, and then a ground out for the 2nd out. He then walked two batters with two outs and the thinking is here we go again with the two-out walks. Kraft then hit a batter to load the bases with two outs. For once a two-out walk didn't score as Kraft got a K to end UK's half of the inning. IU pitchers hit five Troy batters in the double-header this past Sunday and they already have one in this game to go along with the walks. In 16 games this season so far, we have hit 26 batters and walked 100 and counting with this game.

In IU's 3rd, Ellis hit a leadoff 435 ft homer to right center to give IU a 2-run lead and Tibbets then walked to put a man on with no outs chasing the UK starter as they go to the bullpen. UK brought in RHP Mason Moore, a freshman, who has 6.2 IP and an ERA of 2.70. Pyne walked to put runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs, and a force out at 2nd put runners on the corners with one out. Mathison hit into a fielder's choice at 2nd, which scored which scored Tibbetts from 3rd. Doanes walked to load the bases with two outs, but the inning ended on a force out at 2nd. IU leads 7-4 with the 4th coming up.

Ellis is tied for the B1G lead in homers with nine homers.

In the 4th, IU dodged a bullet when the leadoff batter for UK crushed a pitch that ended up foul, just outside the foul pole. Good inning for Kraft as he got them down in order on a ground out and two Ks.

In IU's 4th, Whalen singled up the middle to leadoff. After hitting homers in his first two at-bats today, Ellis was plunked in the back putting runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs. Tibbetts fouled out for the 1st out. An RBI double by Pyne scored a run and put runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out and chased another UK pitcher. RHP Wyatt Hudepohl came in for UK with 6.1 IP and ERA of 5.68. A 2nd out shallow pop up was not enough to score a run. Mathison struck out to end the inning missing a big chance to really add to IU's lead as they score one run.

In UK's 5th, Kraft got the first two batters on a K and a flyout, then gave up a single on a shallow single down the LF line and another single that was slapped through the infield to put men on 1st and 2nd. Another infield single to SS with the runner just beating the throw, loaded the bases with two outs. IU went to their bullpen and brought in Nathan Stahl. After having an 0-2 count on the batter, Stahl ran the count full and then gave up a single down the 3rd base line to empty the bases and make it 8-7, IU. A single to the pitcher put another man on who ended up stealing 2nd with two outs. A K ended the inning, but IU gave up three runs after two outs and I don't know how many runs we have given up after two outs this season, but it's been a bunch.

In IU's 5th, Jessee led off with his 2nd homer of the day to give IU a two-run lead at 9-7. Jessee's homer matched Ellis' effort so far on the day. Doanes then doubled to put a man on 2nd with no outs and chases another UK pitcher. LHP Mason Hazelwood comes in for UK and has pitched just 1.1 IP. Glasser then hit his third double of the day to score Doanes to put IU up 10-7, and a man on 2nd with no outs. With one out and a man still on 2nd, they intentionally walked Ellis after hitting him in his last at bat after he clubbed two huge homers, putting men on 1st and 2nd. Tibbetts walked to load the bases with one out, but Pyne struck out for the 2nd out. Colopy then walked to bring in another run. A hard hit ball that went right to the 1st baseman ended the inning with IU scoring three runs to make it 11-7, IU

In UK's 6th, UK got leadoff single and then Kraft got a K for the 1st out. A single put runners on 1st and 2nd with one out. Stahl then hit a batter to load the bases, which is the 2nd batter to be hit by IU pitching in this game. Grant Holderfield relieved Kraft with the bases loaded and one out. Holderfield got two Ks to end the threat and UK's side of the inning. The guy that Holderfield struck out for the 3rd out was Daniel Harris who was batting 1.000 with the bases loaded so far on the season, and that went by the wayside. The freshman Holderfield has been really impressive coming out of the bullpen so far this season.

In IU's 6th, UK goes to the bullpen again bringing in LHP Jackson Nove with 3 IP and an ERA 6.00. Jessee got a leadoff walk and Doanes singled to put runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs. Glasser struck out for the 1st out. An infield hit by Whalen loaded the bases with one out. Ellis struck out but the pitch got away from the catcher and Jessee scored on the wild pitch making it 12-7 with runners on 2nd and 3rd with two outs. A two-run double by Tibbetts scored two runs to make it 14-7. Tibbetts then scored on a single by Pyne to make it 15-7, and Colopy struck out to end the 6th. It's good to see one of our opponents giving up runs after two outs.

In UK's 7th, Holderfield got the leadoff hitter on a ground out and then two Ks to take them down in order. Holderfield has faced five batters and has four Ks.

In IU's 7th, UK went to their bullpen again bringing in LHP Evan Byers who has just 1.1 IP and an ERA of 6.75. Mathison led off by blasting a leadoff homer to the deepest part of the park to give IU a 16-7 lead. Jessee struck out and Doanes walked, but a DP ended the inning with IU up 16-7.

In UK's 8th, the leadoff hitter reached on a single through the infield. Holderfield then got his 5th K for the 1st out. The runner moved to 2nd on a SF with two outs. Holderfield then got his 6th K to end the 8th for UK.

In IU's half of the inning, Whalen flied out, Ellis singled, Tibbetts flied out, and Pyne doubled to bring Ellis in to make it 17-7 with two outs. IU has scored in every inning today since it's unlikely they will come to bat in the 9th. Colopy then crushed a 426 ft. two-run homer to LF to make it 19-7 with two outs. Mathison then doubled and Jessee was hit by a pitch to put runners on 1st and 2nd with still two outs and that chased the freshman reliever for the Wildcats. Another frosh came in to pitch for UK in RHP Colby Frieda who has 2.1 IP with an ERA of 15.43, and it's UK's 7th pitcher today. Doanes then singled to RF to make it 20-7, and Glasser grounded out to end the inning. All players in the lineup today have at least one hit and six have at least three or more hits.

IN UK's 9th, Holderfield struck out the leadoff batter, got the 2nd out on a flyout, but hit the next batter to put a man on with two outs. A K ended the game. Holderfield had 8 Ks in 3.2 IP.

Ellis and Jessee had two homers each today while Mathison and Colopy hit one each. Doanes was 4 for 5, and Glasser, Whalen, Ellis, Pyne and Jessee all had three hits on the day as IU had 23 hits and everyone in the lineup had at least one hit. This was a big win for IU and without looking, I believe it's a Quad 1 win for the Hoosiers which is big.

IU scored at least 1 run in every inning. Awesome hitting tonight and decent pitching from Holderfield.
Go Hoosiers!

Really good win against a really good UK team
Kentucky has a big series with Arkansas this weekend and it would help our resume out if UK was to take that series. We lost a 5-2 game to Arkansas down in Texas when they were ranked No. 2, and I believe they are currently No. 3 in at least one of the polls but I don't know which one.

Doesn’t really matter if UK wins or looses the series. They will have a high RPI at the end of the year playing in the SEC. It’s a really quality win on IUs NCAA resume regardless of how UK finishes the season.

Wins over SEC baseball teams are big. Beating UK anytime is great. Baseball is serious in the SEC.
