Kaleb Banks

Georgia 4A Player of the year.

Looks like we have gotten a good one here. Pair him up with CJ Gunn and we should have some firepower on the court.

Now if Bates and Geronimo mature, we'll have some potent wings/forwards.

Just need 1/2 more to leave/hit the portal.
lol. Another Gunn comment. I’d think Schifino brings more to the table and earlier than Gunn. Georgia POY is no joke tho for Banks. Congrats young man!

People bullish on Gunn because he’s not a top 50 or whatever # pleases you crowd are going to be in for a treat. I like JHS as much as the next guy but people who act like JHS is going to come in and average 15 ppg (because he’s a 5*) are going to be in for a disappointment. JHS is a ball-dominant player and good at facilitating. Will be interesting to see how things shake out with JHS and Xavier in the lineup together.

Gunn is a flat out scorer and won’t be shocked at all to see him score more points than JHS next year.

JHS is a point guard who will distribute the ball and make it possible for others to score . He might not score a lot of points , but will be a big part of IU being able to put up points .

Their minutes will start with their ability to play defense. So they both better be ready to bring it on that end of the ball. Do that and play within the flow of offense or make some shots from deep, and they will see time on the floor as freshmen.

JHS will play no matter what as there are only 2 PGs on the roster.

He’s a very good shooter who can score from all 3 levels. I don’t need a recruiting ranking to tell me the minutes he should be allocated.
You clearly need to look at a depth chart. He’s a slightly above average shooter. Only shot 37% from 3 this year and only 38% from 3 last year. Now you expect him to come into the Big Ten and shoot at that level or better?

Depends on the types of shots he took in HS, versus what he’d get in college. I haven’t seen any of his HS games. Guessing he didn’t get a lot of open catch and shoot looks though. Depending on who else we have, he might get more open looks at IU than he did in HS.

Same could be said for Anthony Leal who also shot 37% from 3 in high school. Freshmen don’t typically shoot well in college basketball. Lowly ranked freshmen even less.

No disrespect to Leal, but Gunn is a much better athlete and much better pure scorer than Leal and played much better high school competition. Dogging Gunn because of his recruiting ranking isn’t going to make you look foolish in the end, but you’re used to that.

Gunn is not a "Much better athlete". Leal shot 58% from the field his Senior year compared to Gunn's 45%. I'm not dogging Gunn because of his ranking. Based on what I have seen from him and players just like him in high school, I don't believe he will be even a contributor until his Junior or Senior year.

There are always posters like you that think the answer to all problems is the random unheralded recruit. Inevitably the recruit gets to IU and doesn't perform right away (and usually not at all). Gunn will be no different. I would be willing to bet you a large sum Gunn doesn't get more than 10 mpg next year (barring injuries to others). He's just not the type of player to be an instant impact player. In the 1-3 spots he has the following players ahead of him:

XJ/JHS
Banks/Leal
Kopp/Galloway

As opposed to all the 5* star/top 50 talent that’s come in over the years and laid eggs as freshman? Gunn’s recruiting ranking has been discussed ad nauseam. He committed to IU extremely early and missed a critical evaluation period last summer due to injury.

Banks by the way is a 4 and will not be competing with Gunn for minutes.

I meant Bates, not Banks.

I’ll bet you $1k Gunn plays less than 310 minutes next year (10 mpg over 31 games). Major injuries at guard nullify it. Let’s see if you will put your money where your mouth is.

I’m not betting you anything.

Discrediting a player (because of his recruiting ranking) is both silly and lazy. You’ve clearly not watched Gunn play if the only flaw you can take away is where a bunch of nerds have him ranked. His game translates very well at this level.

Only 37%?!?! That’s not good enough?

I knew you would be too scared.

Idk how many times I have to tell you that my opinions on Gunn . Aren’t based solely on his recruiting rankings. I’ve seen him play many times. He’s nothing special. Essentially Armaan Franklin 2.0. He isn’t an instant impact player.

37% with a 3 pt line 2+ feet closer and against significantly worse competition than he will see in the Big Ten? Leal shit the same percentage as a Senior. Check out his college freshman and sophomore year percentages.

I think you are more right than wrong. You never know, but it has been a long time since IU has had a Calbert Cheaney or AJ Guyton walk into the hall as a relatively low ranked recruit and tear it up as a frosh.

It is a spring tradition at iu that all new recruits will save us and are better than anything we have now. Same thing every year and this spring is no different.Remember the hype on kopp, bates, and stewart!

So he's going to beat out Bates for minutes? Bates was much higher regarded, played for an elite prep school and still didn't do squat as a freshman. I hope Gunn is awesome but I doubt he makes much of an impact for a few years.

You’re making my point. If you think recruiting rankings are the end be all and the tell tale sign of how a kid is going to perform then you have a long way to go. Blake Wesley and Jeremy Sochan are projected top 20 picks after 1 year in college despite being similarly ranked to Gunn.

Very true. Let's not forget Lander was a 5* too. How did that work out? What I like is JHS's passing. I can see him being very good for shooters who can actually shoot very well. Gunn is one of these. His stroke is effortless and he has athleticism. I like where we are going.

Gunn won’t get on the floor next year in Big Ten play.

Did anyone actually say that you insufferable dick bag? Or is this more bullshit drivel from you?
Bob Knight did it in reverse most of the time to players. Each current team is told about how great those in the past were. Ted Kitchell was told after he was done playing that he was held up to current players to show none of them could play like Ted. Now Ted pointed out while he was there he was told he couldn't play at all.
In the case of Damon Bailey Knight would tell the guards that Bailey was better than any of them even though he was just in the 8th grade. lol

Is Banks considered more of a small forward? He doesn't appear to be very big in the chest and arms. So even though he is 6'8" I would think he is a sf because his weight is listed as 215. What are the strengths in his game?

That’s fine. Problem with Bailey’s post is that the general narrative wasn’t the picture he’s painting. If so he’d be able to link or cite posts. He can’t because they don’t exist. The general narrative was that Kopp and Stewart would be serviceable starters. That’s hardly the narrative that either would be program changers.
