Finally, Justin Smith can be compared to Zion Williamson. They both blew out basketball shoes within one week of each other. Unfortunately, this is the only thing he will ever have in common with Williamson.
Smith gets a ton of criticism for obvious reasons, but blasting him because he isn't Zion Williamson is pretty lame. They are build completely different and are two very different players. A player like Zion comes around about once every 25 years. Last comparable player was Barkley in terms of height/weight/ability. A player like Smith is a dime a dozen, and really his only major calling card is his amazing vertical jump. There's certainly not been many players that could jump 48 inches in the history of basketball, but the rest of his game and his size is completely average. Finally, Justin Smith can be compared to Zion Williamson. Did anyone notice that Justin used some inside moves to score a couple buckets yesterday. He has typically been a putback scorer or uncontested dunk guy. Could be a good sign.
He can shoot all the threes he wants over the summer, but it will do no good unless somebody works with him to correct his shooting technique so he is in a more balanced position and not bringing the ball back behind his head before he releases. The difference is about 50 pounds of muscle. Smith has all of the athleticism, he just doesn't have a position because he's too skinny to play the post but can't shoot well enough for a wing. He needs to do nothing but lift weights and shoot 3's over the off-season and we can wee what sticks.
