Joel Katt ranking

Call me crazy, but I’m not so confident we get in at 11-1 if we are considered the 4th best B1G team. And at this point, that seems to be the most likely scenario if our 1 loss is at osu. If Oregon, PSU, and osu all finish 11-1 or better in the regular season, we’ll be in the same spot we are now. Are you 96% confident that they’d put 4 B1G teams in?

Alabama will be ranked ahead of us with 2 losses if we’re 11-1. I can absolutely see 4 SEC teams getting in.

With the Group of 5 spot, that would leave 3 spots for the Big 12, ACC, and ND. Not happening.

Even if Bama doesn’t jump us, if ND still has one loss, it will be them and not us.

Unfortunately, I see a scenario with 3 B1G teams, 4 SEC, 3 Big 12 + ACC, 1 GO5, and ND.

I'm telling you, if the CFP committee sees things the same way the polls are right now, we can absolutely be left out at 11-1. I really hope I'm wrong.
The worst B10 scenario for IU at 11-1 is if PSU loses at home to O$U, and then we would be tied for 2nd in the 2nd best P4 conference. Do you think an 11-1 SEC team would get left out? Neither do I. I think it will breakdown like this:

SEC - 4
B10 - 4
ACC - 1
B12 - 1
ND
Boise St

Upcoming SEC games of note:

GA @ Ole Miss
Bama @ LSU
TN @ GA
TX @ TX A&M

They're going to keep piling up losses and a 10-2 SEC team isn't making it over an 11-1 B10 team. It's just not happening. The wildcard in all this would be if a team on the outside wins an automatic berth over an undefeated regular season conference champ. Think Clemson beating Miami. Now the ACC is getting 2 teams. Then Kansas St beating BYU. Now the B12 gets 2 teams. If both of those things happen then we are on the bubble. Our SoS is our worst metric and it's only going to rise the rest of the season, except for that dumpster fire from West Laffy. That game won't help, but kicking their asses is gonna be great!

I hate to be a Debbie Downer on this, but this is my fear and what I think is likely to happen at 11-1 (unless the CFP committee has us ranked #6-9 next week). This is the same Joel Klatt in a more recent video predicting IU to miss the playoff at 11-1.

***EDIT - I'd like to add something on a positive note. I know we can absolutely beat OSU and go 12-0. So let's just do that! That said, let's just beat MSU this weekend. GO IU!!!

I'd bet a lot of money a 10-2 Alabama will be in over 11-1 Indiana. It isn't fair. It doesn't make sense. But it is what it is. The brand matters like it or not.

The craziest thing in all of this is that losing to Northern Illinois at home seems to be a good thing. I was unaware of that. We should schedule them at home. It's a win/win! ;)

Yeah, man, that's what I'm afraid of.

I've taken gruff on these boards for years saying we should schedule some marquee pre-conference games, mostly to make the games more interesting, a better 'scene' whether we're home or away. But I'd also mentioned that playing games like that, although we always considered it a "remote possibility", protects us from what happened to FSU last year (for the first time ever), and may happen to us this year...a season where we have a LEGIT national title shot, and we get left out because we were scheduling for 6 wins, instead of scheduling to win it all.

Hope that Louisville cancellation doesn't cost us the most rare opportunity we've ever had...a chance to win an undisputed National Championship in football.

You and others forget FSU lost their #1 QB at the very end of the season before the committee selected the teams for the play-offs. I ma sure it will work against IU if Rourke is hurt again and out for the year but short of that IU's situation is different than last year especially with 12 teams being chosen.
