Jasai Miles Commits to IU

Kinda hard to be excited when we land a former Osprey. Kinda rude to say it though. Sorry, I guess. 🥹

End of the bench guy it looks like.
Agree, rotational player maybe. Developmental player?

The team he played for was awful. They jacked 36 threes per game and played at a high tempo. He may still be a potential shooter though.

7+ attempts per game. Non shooters don't generally get 7+ attempts per game. Maybe Caleb Love syndrome, maybe not. Possibly, in a offense with more discipline and structure his % goes up but 34% at that volume isn't awful.

Not trying to make this guy seem like Steph or anything .. but ... he wasn't that bad of a shooter. Not great though .. elite is 40%+ at high volume. Like DeVries and Wilkerson...

People get too infatuated with percentage. Yes elite shooters are consistently 40+ but volume is more important. Carsen Edwards in his final year only shot 36%, making 4 per game on 11 attempts. He was still an elite shooter.

Jasai Miles is a Hoosier. The North Florida transfer adds size, rebounding and shooting ability after being the leading scorer for the North Florida Ospreys.

speaking of ospreys, the fam and i were kayaking last week in Bradenton w a guide and he said "look up!" and we saw 4 or 5 ospreys trying to peck the heck out of an American Bald Eagle.

I guess the eagle flew into the osprey's nesting area and they are known to bludgeon bigger birds to death/drown them.

I hope that's what we do to the Big Ten next year.

The Indiana Hoosiers landed a commitment from North Florida transfer Jasai Miles. Miles averaged 15.4 points per game and has two years of eligibility remaining.

Additional story is coming very soon.
He hit 1/3 of his 3's. But he took 220. So he ain't afraid to shoot. Let's hope his shot selection improves. There are good 3's and bad ones. I hope the best for him. Go IU.

Large volume, low percentage 3 guys are known as 'gunners'... And to win, you have to beg them to quit shooting and play team ball instead.

I doubt that's Jasai though. His percentage is OK and I don't see anything that says he's not a team guy, especially since Coach says he is by bringing him in.

If you watch his videos, he clearly has a nice stroke with great rotation. He has good feet and squares up well. Looks like he launched often from Curry range. I think he just had a green light because they lacked other scoring punch. He also has a good handle and can finish at the rim. He could thrive with other shooters and more discipline, which he will get at IU. He had interest from several D1 programs.

I thought his highlights were impressive, Can handle and drive the ball. Like you say. good form on his shot. And he's physical.

One thing about this year v. last.....when you watch these guys you're like "Hell yes".. Last year when I watched Rice & Carlyle highlights and looked at their stats it was more like "I'm not really seeing it, but the coaches know more than we do....".

Also, Ballo as the #2 prospect in the entire portal with his limitations? What was that about?

You ever see the talons on those raptors? He's bound to have a great "handle" and when he fouls a guy I guarantee you they'll know it... 😉

🍺🏀🍺
Hoping he can claw his way to the top.
End of the bench guy it looks like. Not a good three point shooter or FT shooter. Good 2 P%. Doesn't have great numbers for steals, no idea if he is good at D.
Think of him as dependable filler in the matrix between something more solid and you’ll find yourself walking with more bounce to the step. It works for me as it might for you.

Sounds like we still need a couple more starter types from what you guys are saying about this guy.

I agree about Carlyle and Rice but wont pick on Ballo. Without him then this season would have had 3+ more losses. 13ppg/10rpg and a block was Oumar Ballo. Overanked probably but he did fine by my expectation.

We need athletes and he looks the part, no telling what the kid can do if he is surrounded by better players. I love to see athletic guys on the roster just warms the soul.

A team can never have too many “starter guys” just as long as you can keep them all happy. In team sports, scuba diving and oil drilling it’s all about “depth.”

Yes, if athleticism enhances one’s proven ability to play the game, basketball. Superman could leap tall buildings but couldn’t bounce a ball while running, much to his chagrin.

I’m getting excited about the offensive potential of this developing roster. We have athletic guys now who can move, handle, shoot, drive and kick from the perimeter. Last year, we had 1 guy (Gallo) who could do it with any consistency, but he often encountered a clogged lane. Conerway, Tucker, Wilkerson, Miles, Enright, and even Bailey can thrive in a 4 or 5 out based offense with Conerway directing. Going to see a lot of dribble drives, rim finishes, kick outs, and open shooters who can shoot it. A modern offense that is effective. And they should be able to run assuming we get more rebounders.
Just get some bigs to complete the roster.

That's the next big signing(s). See what I did there? 😁

I was always told there are two things you can't teach/coach and that is height and athletic ability. I don't think Cohen Carr at MSU is a great basketball player but his athletic ability makes up for some of it.

I don't disagree. He did everything he could do and everything he was asked to do. He was just ranked too high given his limitations.

Plus he has the perfect coach to mesh those things together. He will be a nice finished product.

I like Miles' video. He can play. Not just shooting but getting inside under control or nice athleticism, whatever it calls for.

I remember now what I found unsettling a couple days ago. I never saw using his left hand to finish. His inside finishes were right handed and that made a few awkward or difficult. I thought some of those would've been swatted away in the B1G. Contrast to Reed Bailey who switches finishing hands like they're equal. Oh well, Miles still scores them. And he handles the ball well with both hands.

Excited about everyone we've signed so far.

Ballo may of met expectations statistically, but under Woody, he is 1 example of many as to why it did not work. Devries is putting work into the background of these guys. Enright tweeting about guys committing tells you all you need to know. 1 of the guys most certainly takes away from his playing time. You think Ballo or Mgbako would have reacted the same. It is not fantasy sports, there is a large portion to this that deals with human emotions. Woody looked at takent and gave them the bag of cash. Devries used his resources and gave them an opportunity based on believing their makeup would add to his goals. I really believe the slow start to getting guys was him being deliberate in his vetting of players. The nil/portal era has waned my interest, but my uneducated 30,000 foot view leads me to believe we have a guy who has a framework which could lead to success.

I’m guessing that CDD has actually lost out on a player or two because he didn’t want to rush the vetting process, which allowed a less-deliberate coach to move more quickly but with less consideration. He seems to be adamant about knowing who he is making a commitment to and is willing to risk losing a player rather than cheat the process.

Yeah. There were a few, especially big guys that I thought he let slip by. But he knows what he is looking for in a team makeup than I or any fan or evaluator/writer does. I think he is being focused on what guys are out there and how they will develop into a tough nosed/winning team that can pull out the close games with shooting/defense/ and free throw shooting. I still wonder if he will try for a couple HS kids to add to Sisley though. But I leave that for his expertise.
