I watched a few minutes of his interview. Paraphrasing he said he's probably the only black guy in history to lead four white guys to the ncaa final. said they were lucky to get there. that come back against duke where he was running up the court pumping his arms will always be one of my favorite moments in sports. you could just feel the energy. i was in a bar in florida at the time and i think every single person in the bar was pulling for iu. the folks who were at that game must have had one hell of an experience.

I was at the game...in Rupp...it was one hell of an experience. Heh.

It was a treat. Especially sweet because we had gotten so far behind at the half.

Ran into him once at a strip club in Tampa right after that 02' loss\he had just gotten drafted to Washington..
I told him I was from Indiana and grew up on IU ball but it was like he didnt believe me haha.
He kept asking me where I was from and I told him Jeffersonville and was tryin to explain to him it was right at the bottom of the state by Louisville.
We talked a couple minutes.

Pretty petty/egotistical statement - from what I recall and in terms of Floor 'generalship', Coverdale led that Team. And Fife.
Yeah he basically went on to say that the teams they played (Duke/Maryland ) were stacked with pros and he was the only guy on iu to play after that. I know not the nba but didn’t newton play overseas?

Newton and Leach did come off the bench during that run. Hornsby, Coverdale, Fife, Odle started with JJ.

Do not remember Odle starting in Lexington or in final four. Remember Newton starting.

I got patted down before going into a strip club in Tampa around that time. Was one of the scariest environments I have ever been in. My drunk friend in a xxl crown royal racing jacket was having the time of his life however.

Ohhh man Tampa, that brings back some memories

I dont know if this is all supposed to be a joke or (?)
Lol im gonna take it as srs tho.

Ya man, I used to hit up so many strip clubs back in the day.
Florida ones always had the best lookin girls.
That night I would have never met Jared Jeffries had I not asked one simple question.
"Whose the stretch limo for"

I was so young, dumb, and full of booze that night, that to this day I realize I never appreciated the odds of that whole situation happening

I was a sophmore and I'll never forget running to showalter fountain after that win..what an incredible run- the buzz on campus was amazing!

I have some real good stories from around that time in life. Was a great time, before the smart phone. I would be in jail if they had iPhones back then.

My IU college visit was the day after that win and the vibe was awesome. My friends and I got stopped by one of the Indy TV station reporters by the fountain who asked what the reaction on campus was like after the game. We made up a story about running around the dorms or something, then our story made it to the news that night.

Then we went to the HPER and played bball for a few hours. Pretty good day.

As did Moye before his health issues.

Frikken, thanks for the link on starter's and off the bench guys. Chemistry on that team was great. All seemed happy to be contributing regardless of starter, or not.

I'm sure he said it in a joking way....

I know his dad....he's a big IU baseball fan, a fisherman, and a great guy. I have to think JJ's a good guy as well.

No problem. If I remember right, Odle didn't start all year--earlier in the year it was Newton, but I can't remember why Davis switched it up.

I could be wrong but I believe Leach actually got some starts and then sprained his ankle which opened the door for Odle to start. Newton could have started at some point as well but I believe he was our first big off the bench which he played that role very well that season.

I just took a quick peek online and it showed Newton started 5 games, Leach 10, and Odle 23.

funny how memory fades. i'd have never guessed that. i thought newton started every game, and certainly started more games than leach. that team had great size, shooters, and lots of gritty personalities. shame that coverdale got injured.

Tom Coverdale was a gritty, tough, leader at IU!

Heck yeah he was, Coverdale was a leader for sure. Ashamed he hurt his ankle. Rough.

now he is rocking it as an insurance agent in Noblesville. Have family up there. Went to see my niece at one of the local elementary schools for a school play. Cov was there, said hi, super nice guy. Though he looks like a Full back these days, like all of us as we get older lol
