IUBASE vs. Middle Tennessee

The Wyrick kid came into the game with a nice ERA of under 2.00. If we don't jump on their pitcher tomorrow who had an ERA of over 9, I'll be extremely disappointed.

Until I see otherwise, I'm prepared to be extremely disappointed every game. I'm not a fair weather fan (although it's too freaking cold to sit thru a game right now lol), but I'm really down on this team at this point.

Hoosiers Fall to Middle Tennessee in Home Opener, 5-3

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana baseball (4-7-1) dropped its 2017 home opener, 5-3, to the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders on Friday afternoon.

Senior Tony Butler picked up two hits, including a triple, and scored. Sophomore Luke Miller also added two hits and a score, while freshman Jake Matheny picked up a timely two-out hit to score two runs. Senior Alex Krupa picked up an RBI in the effort.

Sophomore Tim Herrin fell to 1-2 in the 3.2 inning outing. He allowed six hits and three earned run while striking out two. Senior Luke Stephenson and sophomore Pauly Milto each picked up 2.2 innings in relief.

An early error set up Middle Tennessee to score in the opening frame before Herrin picked up a swinging strikeout to strand one runner. Four hits then paved the path for the Blue Raiders to add two runs in the top of the second to take a 3-0 lead.

After a quick 1-2-3 top of the third inning, Butler singled to left-center field and stole second, but Middle Tennessee picked up two outs to strand Butler in scoring position.

A sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth upped The Blue Raiders' lead to 4-0. The Hoosiers used some two-out hitting to cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the frame. Luke Miller led off with an infield single, while Dedelow singled to right field. A ball off Sowers' ankle loaded the bases before Middle Tennessee secured two outs. Matheny took an offering to left field to drive in two runs, cutting the deficit to 4-2. Butler followed by also getting hit by a pitch, but an out at third base left the bases loaded for the Hooseirs.

Middle Tennessee added a fifth run in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly. Jeremy Houston tried to ignite Indiana's offense in the bottom of the inning with a two-out walk and swipe of second base, but a strikeout ended the frame.

The Hoosiers tried to rally in the bottom of the ninth as Butler led off with a triple to left field. Houston rocked a ball down the third base line that landed just foul before Krupa's sacrifice fly plated Butler.

Indiana and Middlee Tennessee return to action on Saturday afternoon at 2:05 p.m

IU bats stay cold in Bloomington as Hoosiers lose home opener

The bats fell flat in IU’s first game at Bart Kaufman Field this season, and the Hoosiers were unable to find a much-needed victory Friday afternoon against Middle Tennessee State.

MTSU scored four runs in the first four innings and wouldn’t even need the additional run it added in the seventh inning, as IU could only plate three runs in the 5-3 loss.

IU junior outfielder Logan Sowers misplayed a fly ball in the first inning to allow an immediate Blue Raider runner in scoring position, which MTSU plated with a sacrifice fly later in the inning.

A single and sacrifice fly in the second inning pushed the Blue Raiders’ lead to 3-0, and they never looked back, as they added another sacrifice fly run two innings later.

The Hoosiers answered the four quick runs with two of their own after loading the bases with no outs in the fourth inning.

Two singles by junior Luke Miller and senior Craig Dedelow and a hit-by-pitch for Sowers loaded the bases, then two quick outs left freshman catcher Jake Matheny as the last batter to salvage what was a potential big inning. The catcher singled to push two runs across.

IU tallied six hits and stranded eight runners in total, including three in the bottom of the eighth while trailing by three runs.

Sophomore pitcher Tim Herrin made his third start of the season for IU and earned the loss, as he allowed four runs, but just one earned, in 3.2 innings of work. Herrin allowed six hits and struck out two Blue Raiders.

In relief, senior pitcher Luke Stephenson was able to stop the bleeding with his most extensive outing of the season, after battling a blister on the middle finger of his right hand all year.

Stephenson pitched 2.2 innings, allowed two hits and retired the first seven batters he faced. Sophomore pitcher Pauly Milto finished out the final 2.2 innings with just one hit allowed.

The loss dropped the Hoosiers to 4-7-1 on the season, and they have now won just two of their last nine games. They will need to win the final two games of the series against MTSU to avoid losing just the third home series since Bart Kaufman Field opened in 2013.

The games on Saturday and Sunday are scheduled to start at 2:05 p.m. and 1:05 p.m., respectively.
