Win at #20 Maryland
COLLEGE PARK, Md.
-- Indiana took a 1-0 series lead at No. 20 Maryland with a 6-5 victory on Friday evening at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium.

IU gave Maryland RHP Mike Shawaryn his first loss (10-1), recording nine hits against UM's starter, the most Shawaryn has given up in 2015.

But it was a costly infield error that allowed the Hoosiers to take the lead for good in the top of the sixth.

Will Nolden walked and reached second on Austin Cangelosi's sacrifice bunt to open the inning. Casey Rodrigue beat out the throw to first base for a single and stole second to put the leading run in scoring position with two outs.

Maryland committed its only error of the game on a routine grounder to shortstop, miffing a throw to first that allowed Nolden and Rodrigue to score and give IU a 5-4 lead.

Rodrigue's RBI single in the eighth gave IU an insurance run and lead of 6-4 -- and the Hoosiers needed it.

The Terrapins scored a run in the bottom of the same frame before loading the bases with two outs. That's when IU's all-time saves leader Ryan Halstead was called upon to finish things off.

Halstead forced a pop up for the final out of the eighth and retired Maryland in order in the ninth to earn his team-high eighth save of the season and 31st of his career, the most in IU history.

RHP Jake Kelzer earned his fourth win of the season, pitching five innings and matching a career high with six strikeouts to lead IU.

Indiana's 10 hits were led by three each from Scott Donley and Rodrigue .

The Hoosiers scored the game's first three runs, one in the top of the first and two in the third, before Maryland could get on the board.

IU received back-to-back two-out base hits in the opening frame, a double from Brad Hartong and an RBI single from Scott Donley, to take a 1-0 lead.

Maryland's lead-off batter reached base in the first and second innings, but a pair of double plays by the Hoosier infield shut the door on those opportunities.

Four of IU's 10 hits came in the top of the third, allowing the Hoosiers to expand their lead to 3-0 thanks to RBI singles from Donley and Craig Dedelow.

Maryland tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the frame and took a 4-3 lead in the following fourth inning on a solo home run.

IU appeared prime to immediately retake the advantage in the fifth, loading the bases with one out, before the Terrapins turned a double play to maintain its 4-3 lead.
The Hoosiers and No. 20 Terrapins continue their weekend series in College Park, Md., on Saturday, May 2, at 2 p.m. ET.

Sunday's series finale at 11 a.m. ET will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
