IU wins 2-0 over WKU in 2nd exhibition

IU Tops Western Michigan In Exhibition Play

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana men's soccer team got goals from sophomore Grant Lillard and senior Femi Hollinger-Janzen in the second half to post a 2-0 win over Western Michigan in an exhibition game on Thursday night.

The game was played inside Memorial Stadium, the home of the IU football team, in an effort to preserve the playing surface at the regular home for IU soccer – Armstrong Stadium.

In the first half, the two teams played fairly even across the board, both creating a pair of chances on the attack but coming up empty. The first IU chance came when Tanner Thompson sent a cross into the box that narrowly missed the diving header attempt by Lillard.

Later in the half, Hollinger-Janzen was able to pressure the WMU defenders and force a turnover that led to a semi-breakaway. He was able to get inside the 18-yard box and get off strong shot but it was saved and the teams headed to the locker room tied, 0-0.

Early in the second half, Western Michigan had a couple header attempts off set pieces go over the crossbar in their best chances of the half.

Once IU regained control of the half, it would be Thompson delivering a stellar service into the box off a corner kick that found Lillard's head and then the back of the net to give IU a 1-0 lead.

Indiana would ice the game later in the half when freshman Rees Wedderburn beat his defender along the right sideline and then delivered a strong cross through the box that Hollinger-Janzen easily put home inside the 6-yard box to put IU in front, 2-0.

Indiana will play its third and final exhibition game on Saturday in Fort Wayne, Indiana, when they take part in the Shindigz National Soccer Festival. The Hoosiers, ranked No. 14 in the NSCAA preseason poll, will play Marquette at 7:30 p.m. ET.

The regular season will begin on Aug. 28 for the Hoosiers, as they welcome St. John's to Armstrong Stadium as part of the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic starting at 8:00 p.m.
