Gametime temp is around 60. It's RHP Seth Benes on the mound for IU with Miami starting LHP Luke Ross. Sefcik is the DH and Joey Brenczewski gets his first start of his career at 1B. Tibbitts is behind the plate and Wiggins gets his first start and is in RF.

1st inning:

T1st:

Taylor made a great play on a liner to get the leadoff hitter. Benes then gave up a homer to CF to give Miami the early lead. Benes then got back-to-back Ks to retire the side as he recovered nicely after giving up the homer.

B1st:

Mathison popped out to lead off. Pyne lined out to CF for the 2nd out.

Taylor singled up the middle to put a runner on with two outs. Tibbitts flied out to RF to end the inning.

End of the 1st: Miami (OH) 1 IU 0

Taylor is a hitting machine. Perfect balance. Quick hands. Kid has the entire package at the plate.

Little announcers just casually said AJ will be out for “a while” - so there’s really no clue what that means.

2nd inning:

T2nd:

Benes was pulled after the 1st inning and IU brought in RHP Cooper Katskee to face the 5 thru 7 hitters.

Katskee put them down in order to include two Ks.

B2nd:

Like with IU, the Redhawks went to the bullpen and brought in another pitcher in RHP Nolan Hollis to face 5-7 hitters with Cerny leading off.

Cerny doubled to lead off. Brenczewski moved Cerny to 3rd on a ground out.

Wiggins brought in Cerny on a SF to tie the game at 1-1. Cefcik flied out to the CF wall to end the inning.

End of 2nd: IU 1 Miami (OH) 1

Looks like a total bulllen game for both teams. Makes sense. Throw em out there and see what you’ve got.

3rd inning:

T3rd:

Katskee was back out there to face the 8 thru 1 hitters.

On a 1-2 count, Katskee gave up a no-doubt homer to give the Redhawks the lead again at 2-1. Mercer goes to the bullpen.

We see LHP Grant Holderfield for the first time since the two seasons ago and he faced the No. 9 hitter with no one on and no outs.

Holderfield got his first batter on a ground out. With the top of the order up, he gave up a double to put a man in scoring position with one out.

A ground out kept the runner at 2nd with two outs. Another ground out retired the side to leave a man on.

B3rd:

It's the 9 thru 2 hitters up with Burckel leading off.

Burckel was hit to lead off and then he took 2nd on a passed ball and the top of the order up with Mathison.

Mathison walked on four pitches with runners at 1st and 2nd and no outs and Pyne up.

Pyne clobbered a 3-run homer to give IU a 4-2 lead with no outs so far, and the Redhawks go to the bullpen.

The Redhawks bring in LHP Connor Preisel to face Taylor with no outs.

Taylor grounded out for the first out. Tibbitts who is off to a slow start at the plate, Kd for the 2nd out.

Cerny Kd to end the inning.

End of 3rd: IU 4 Miami (OH) 2

That was a bomb by former Hoosier Evan Applewick. Taylor barely flinched. Probably felt pretty good for Applewick. Not so much for Mercer.

Ball must be juiced today. Every fly ball has either gone over or up against the wall. Hammertime boys.

4th inning:

T4th:

IU brings in Gonzaga transfer RHP Jack Moffitt for the first time this season and he will face the 4 thru 6 hitters.

Moffitt got a ground out to start off, but then gave up a single with one out. IU got a DP ball to retire the side.

B4th:

It's the 6 thru 8 hitters up with Brenczewski leading off and he fouled out for the first out.

Wiggins Kd for the 2nd out. Back-to-back walks put runners on 1st and 2nd with two outs and the top of the order up.

Mathison lined out to end the inning:

End of 4th: IU 4 Miami (OH) 2

5th inning:

T5th:

With Moffitt back on the mound, IU gave up two runs with one unearned on a K, HBP, a double, a ground out moving runners to 2nd and 3rd, a bunt single scoring two runs with Pyne charged with an error and the game tied at 4-4. A K retired the side.

B5th:

Pyne walked to lead off and Taylor singled to put runners on the corners with no outs.

Tibbitts hit a SF to score Pyne and Taylor took 2nd. Cerny singled to advance Taylor to 3rd.

Cerny stole 2nd to put runners at 2nd and 3rd.

Brenczewski doubled to LF to score both Taylor and Cerny.

Colopy Kd for the 2nd out.

The Redhawks went to the bullpen. A WP moved Brenczewski to 3rd.

Secik flied out to end the inning with IU up 7-4.

I had a distraction so I hope I got everything as they occurred in that inning.

End of 5th: IU 7 Miami (OH) 4

6th inning:

T6th:

It was the 4 thru 6 hitters up and RHP Evan Whiteaker on the mound for IU replacing Moffitt.

Whiteaker walked the leadoff hitter. Whiteaker Kd the next batter with one on at 1st and one out.

Whiteaker gave up a single to put runners on 1st and 2nd with one out.

A FC got the runner at 2nd with runners on the corners and two outs. A ground out retired the side.

B6th:

It's the 1 thru 2 hitters up with Burckel leading off. Burckel flied out to the CF warning track for out No. 1 and the top of the order up in Mathison.

Mathison doubled to CF to put a runner on 2nd and one out.

Pyne grounded out to move Mathison to 3rd, and two outs.

Mathison scored on a single by Taylor to make it 8-4 and Tibbitts up with two outs and a man on at 1st.

Tibbitts Kd to end the inning and his season-opening slump continued with his batting average at .143.

End of 6th: IU 8 Miami (OH) 4

7th inning:

T7th:

IU brought in LHP Brandon Keyster and he faced the 9 thru 2 hitters. A HBP and another homer by Miami cut IU's lead to 8-6.

B7th:

Cerny singled to open the inning, but that would be it for IU as they close the 7th inning with a 8-6 lead.

End of 7th: IU 8 Ohio (OH) 6

8th inning:

T8th:

Keyster is back out there. He got the leadoff hitter on a K on a full count. Mercer went to the bullpen after the K to bring in RHP Drew Buhr, a transfer from Bellarmine.

Buhr got a K for two outs and no one on. A double puts a man in scoring position with two outs.

The No 8 hitter, Appelwick, was up with a man at 2nd, and he hit a homer earlier in the game.

Buhr got a K to retire the side with a man stranded at 2nd.

B8th:

Burckel led off for IU. Burckel got a leadoff double to bring up the top of the order.

A double by Mathison sent Burckel home where he was tagged out for the first out.

With Mathison on 2nd and one out, the Redhawks go to the bullpen again and brought in RHP Patrick Mastrian who is one of the Redhawks starting pitchers, so even though this is a midweek game, they want this game badly.

It didn't work as Pyne doubled to score Mathison.

With Pyne on 2nd, Taylor was intentionally walked to bring up the struggling Tibbitts with one out.

Tibbits reached on a FC, with the pitcher charged with an error on a throw to 2B which went into CF, scoring Pyne and putting Tibbitts on a 1st.

Cerny doubled to score both Taylor and Tibbitts to make it 12-6 and a man on 2nd and one out.

Stadler grounded out to the pitcher with Cerny taking 3rd and two outs. Colopy Kd to end the inning.

End of 8th: IU 12 Miami (H) 6

9th inning:

T9th:

Buhr was on the mound to close it out and with two outs and no one on, Mercer went to the bullpen to bring in another pitcher rather than let Buhr try to put them down in order to end it. Needless to say, Mercer was trying to get as many pitchers in the game as possible with the game won.

He brought in RHP Jacob Vogel and he got just one pitch in on a flyout to end the game.

Final: IU 12 Miami (OH) 6

IU outhit the Redhawks 13 to 9 with IU using 11 position players today. IU had eight extra base hits to include one homer. IU struck out just six times today after averaging 12.3 Ks in the Baseball on the Beach tournament which is an improvement although IU saw starting pitching in the tournament compared to midweek pitching today. IU and Miami had one error each today.

IU had four players with multiple hits today.

Cerny - 4 for 5 with two doubles and two RBIs and he scored 2 runs

Pyne - 2 for 4 with a double and homer for 4 RBIs and he scored 3 runs

Taylor - 3 for 4 with 1 RBI and he scored 2 runs

Mathison - 2 for 4 and two doubles and he scored 3 runs

Brenczewski - 1 for 3 with a double and 2 RBIs

Tibbitts' struggles at the plate continued and that is a puzzler. He went 0 for 4 with 2 Ks, and saw his batting average fall to .087.

IU used eight pitchers today with Moffitt the only one with more than one inning and he pitched two innings. Given the number of pitchers used and their limited time on the mound, I'm not going to bother to break down each pitcher's performance.

I thought it was significant that the eight pitchers used today only gave up one walk on the day. They hit two batters and gave up three doubles and three homers. They got 12 Ks and had no WPs. Of the six runs given up, five were earned.

They have several after game video interviews on iubase.com's X account that are interesting.

Good call on the pitchers. Although I previously posted I thought it was a good idea to throw them out there to see what you have, I’m not entirely sure what conclusions they could make after that one.

Looking ahead to the three-game series in Waco, Texas this weekend against Baylor Bears, the Bears are currently 1-3 after going 0-3 in a tournament against Nebraska, Oregon, and Tennessee on a neutral field, while getting their lone win against Lamar at home.

Series with a little bit of interest this weekend is the Boilermakers playing George Mason in a four-game series in Holly Springs, NC. I know you have to be careful in comparing games, but it would be interesting how that series pans out after GMU dropped all three games in the Baseball on the Beach this past weekend.

Here’s hoping for a George Sweep!

No firm conclusions … but no disastrous innings… maybe mid week pitching won’t be a big concern this year.

Let’s keep winning the games we’re supposed to win.

Last season, IU went 17-0 against Quad 4 teams and 8-2 against Quad 3 teams which was a major factor in propping up our RPI since a loss to any of those teams can really hurt your RPI to say the least. Hopefully, we continue to avoid those types of losses this season, and needless to say, many of those lower quad teams will be in the midweek games.

The news has been out there for quite a while, and many have probably already seen it, but Shepard will be out for a significant amount of time, and probably anywhere from four to eight weeks, after having arm or wrist surgery. He has had nothing but bad luck with the injuries after missing all of last season because of it.
