May. 15, 2016 Baseball
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Baseball (31-18, 15-6 Big Ten) strung together 10 hits and used a complete game three-hitter from senior
Evan Bell to earn a 4-1 Senior Day victory over the Illinois Fighting Illini on Sunday. With the win, Indiana won the weekend series, 2-1.
Junior
Craig Dedelow led the way for the Hoosiers offensively, as he collected three hits and scored a run. Also collecting multi-hit games for Indiana were freshmen
Scotty Bradley and
Luke Miller. All four runs driven in were accounted by freshman, as Bradley had two while Miller and
Ryan Fineman each had one.
Bell tossed his second complete game of the season on Sunday, as he faced 33 batters and allowed just six baserunners on three hits, a walk and two HBP. Bell struck out six batters as he picked up his second consecutive victory.
After Bell retired the side in order in the top of the first, the Hoosiers strung together three runs on four hits in the bottom half to build an early lead. After Dedelow and Fineman reached on singles, Miller poked a double the opposite way that touched the chalk line. Dedelow scored on the play to make it a 1-0 game. Bradley followed that up with a double to the opposite field gap, scoring both Dedelow and Miller to up the lead to 3-0.
The lone mistake in the game for Bell came in the top of the second. Illinois' cleanup hitter Pat McInerney hit a solo home run over the center field wall of Bart Kaufman Field to make it 3-1 in favor of Indiana. From there, Bell went on to retire 12 of his next 14.
After the Hoosiers failed to score with runners on the corners in the sixth, they managed to add an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh. With junior
Alex Krupa on first base and one out, Dedelow singled to center to allow Krupa to advance two bases. Following a walk to sophomore
Logan Sowers, Fineman flew out to center to score Krupa on the sacrifice, making it a 4-1 Hoosier advantage.
Bell allowed the leadoff batter for the Illini to reach in the eighth on a double, but he retired the next three to end any scoring threat. Then in the ninth with a runner on first and one out, Bell closed out the game with a strikeout looking and a groundout to second.
Indiana is next in action this Tuesday as it travels to Louisville, who is the No. 2 RPI rated team in the country. First pitch from Jim Patterson Stadium will be at 6 p.m.
