It's LHP Ryan Kraft on the mound with Stadler behind the plate. Kraft has an ERA of 7.71 and a WHIP of 1.71 in 11.2 IP. He has 17 Ks against 4 BBs with an OBA of .327.

UCLA will have RHP Cody Delvecchio on the mound with an ERA of 7.06 and a WHIP of 1.52.

The batting order is Wiggins, Taylor, Dickerson, Hanley, Denny (DH), Stadler, Cerny, Oliver, and Malamazian.

T1st:

Wiggins started the game and reached on a throwing error.

Taylor hammered a two-run homer to CF to give IU a quick 2-0 lead with no outs. Dickerson and Hanley both grounded out.

B1st:

Kraft put them down in order to include a K.

End of 1st: IU 2 UCLA 0

T7nd:

It's the 6 thru 8 hitters up with Stadler leading off and he walked on a full count. Cerny SAC bunted Stadler to 2nd and one out. Oliver who has struggled at the plate with an .148 average was up. Oliver and Malamazian both flied out to retire the side.

B7th:

Kraft faced the middle of the order. Kraft got the first two batters on flyouts. He then gave up a two-out single. Kraft picked off the runner at 2B to end the inning.

End of 2nd: IU 2 UCLA 0

T3rd:

IU was at the top of the order with Wiggins leading off and he grounded out. Taylor grounded out to 1B.

Dickerson crunched a homer to CF to give IU a 3-0 lead. Hanley grounded out to retire the side.

B3rd:

Kraft faced the bottom of the order. Kraft got a groundout for the first out and then have up a double. A flyout got the 2nd out with the runner holding at 2nd. With the top of the order up, Kraft got a flyout with no damage done on the double.

In kind of an oddity, Kraft had not given up a double on the season until this one, yet he had given up three triples and three homers so far.

End of 3rd: IU 3 UCLA 0

T4th:

It was the 5 thru 7 hitters up with Denny leading off. Denny Kd and then Stadler doubled.

Cerny hammered a two-run homer to LF to give IU a 5-0 lead with one out and no one on.

Oliver crunched a one-out triple off the wall to put him in score position. We needed Malamazian to put the ball in play and he Kd. Wiggins grounded out to retire the side with Oliver stranded at 3rd.

B4th:

Kraft was back out there to face the 2 thru 4 hitters and he has pitched really well up to this point. Kraft got the leadoff batter on a groundout on a tremendous play by Malamazian at 3B.

Another groundout got the 2nd out. A 3-1 walk put a runner on.

A batter reached on a FC on a throwing error by Cerny and there were two runners on with two outs.

Kraft worked himself out of a minor jam with a groundout which was only partly his fault and he has breezed thru four innings.

End of 4th: IU 5 UCLA 0

It was the 2 thru 4 hitters up and Taylor and Dickerson both Kd. Hanley popped up in the infield to retire the side.

B5th:

Kraft faced the bottom of the order and he walked the leadoff batter on a full count. An error by Oliver put runners on the corners with no outs. Kraft got a K for the 1st out with runners still at the corners.

We are at the top of the order and IU went to the bullpen and brought in RHP Cole Gilley with an ERA of 2.49 and a WHIP of 0.83.

I guess Gilley will not be the Sunday pitcher. You could say that Oliver's error is what ended up chasing Kraft who pitched well, but I guess they saw something that made them feel that Kraft was running out of gas.

Gilley Kd his first batter seen for two outs and runners still on the corners.

A flyout ended the inning and IU pitched out of huge jam with runners on the corners and no outs.

End of 5th: IU 5 UCLA 0

Brenczewski came in to pinch hit for Denny and he grounded out. Stadler flied out for the 2nd out. Cerny Kd to retire the side.

B6th:

Gilley faced the 3 thru 5 hitters. Gilley gave up a solo homer to the leadoff hitter as UCLA chipped away at the lead. Gilley then got three straight Ks to end the inning.

End of 6th: IU 5 UCLA 1

It's the 8 thru 1 hitters up with Oliver leading off and he walked on a full count. A SAC bunt by Malamazian moved Oliver to 2nd and one out and we were at the top of the order in Wiggins.

UCLA went to the bullpen for the first time and brought in LHP Ian May with an ERA of 4.64 and a WHIP of 1.45. He has given up 10 extra base hits on the season to include three doubles, one triple, and six homers so far.

Wiggins singled to put runners on the corners with one out. Taylor Kd for the 2nd out, and this was the second time in the game where we had runners on the corners and one out, and the next batter Kd.

Dickerson flied out to retire the side and IU blew a big chance to get that run back.

B7th:

Gilley faced the bottom of the order and the leadoff hitter singled. Gilley then got an infield pop-up for an out.

A DP ended the inning with no damage done.

End of 7th: IU 5 UCLA 1

It was the 4 thru 6 hitters up with Hanley leading off and he lined out. Brenczewski then Kd for two outs. Stadler then singled to put a man on with two outs.

After the lefty May faced several left-handed Hoosiers, they go to the bullpen to bring in RHP Jack O'Connor with an ERA of 2.79 and a WHIP of 1.04, and he faced the righty Cerny.

Cerny Kd to retire the side.

B8th:

Gilley faced the top of the order and it was a quick inning for Gilley as he put them down in order.

End of 8th: IU 5 UCLA 1

IU got a huge series opening win with some great pitching and with the long ball. IU outhit the Bruins 7-4 with five of those hits for extra bases to include a double, a triple, and three homers.

IU had just one multi-hit player.

Stadler - 2 of 3 with a double and he scored one run.

Taylor - 1 of 4 with a two-run homer in the 1st and two RBIs.

Dickerson - 1 for 4 with a solo homer.

Cerny - 1 for 3 with a two-run homer.

Oliver also had a triple.

The pitching was great and maybe Kraft should start games rather than come out of the bullpen where he has been struggling. IU used just two pitchers so that was big, and wanting this series opening win may have been the reason they potentially burned a Gilley start on Sunday.

Kraft - 4.1 IP, 2 hits, to include a double, and no earned runs, 2 Ks and 2 BBs, and the rest of his slate was clean.

Gilley - 4.2 IP, 2 hits to include a solo homer with one earned run, 6 Ks and no BBs, with the rest of his slate clean. He put them down in order in both the 8th and the 9th.

Our middle infield was sloppy tonight with the two errors committed, although they did combine for a DP in the game. UCLA had one error.

Great to see. Things sure seem to be clicking right now. I watched a couple innings late. That stadium seemed kinda dinky. What’s the story there?
It’s actually a very nice field but not huge stadium I think similar size seating as the Bart. The place was not anywhere near full and there were quite a few IU fans there (many were parents). It is separated from ucla campus by the 405 and a cemetery fans park on campus and get shuttle buses to the game
