IU is listed at 23 is the rankings per the link

I would prefer not to be ranked at this time. That's just more pressure

on this team.

That's their own ranking. AP and Coaches Poll come out later today.

I have no problem if we're ranked. We'd have a bullseye regardless of whether there's a number next to our name or not.

I agree, I would prefer IU to play the underdog role.

Not because of an opponent's approach, but from IU's perspective. This IU team seems to be responding well to underdog status. Not sure how they will mentally handle being ranked. Maybe they will continue with the same level of play, but that remains to be seen.

Ranked #44 by Sagarin

which is undoubtedly a more objective scale than one writer's personal opinion. IU ranks 6th in B10 according to Sagarin, which sounds about right.

Re: Ranked #44 by Sagarin

I agree about being ranked. I would prefer the underdog role as well but I suppose if you keep winning you have to be ranked. I think the next two games will tell us if we are truly a contender or not for the big ten.

what was UConn ranked going into the tourney last year?

Didn't they get rolled by Louisville by over 30 during the season? Why do people get so caught up in rankings, just win.

Yeah but...

Sagarin has Davidson at 29 with an 11-4 record,0-3 vs top50, and 108 SOS vs IU at 44 with a 14-4 record, 3-3 vs top 50, and 104 SOS.
Also N Iowa at 26 with 16-2 record, 1-1 vs top 50, SOS of 193.
And OSU at 19 with a14-5 record, 1-5 vs top 50 and 135 SOS.

Early season it lacks consistency, but at this point these anomalies shouldn't exist

In Sagarin, our being at 44 is tied to one loss.

EWU (who's 100 in his ranking). If we don't lose that game, we're a lot higher.

As it happens, in RealTimeRPI we're also 44, but there EWU is 60.

Could be really bad timing with Maryland coming in

Hope they stay focused or Maryland will kick the snot out of them..

Then again, they make punch Maryland in the face and beat yet another ranked team....

Re: Yeah but...

I watched Northern Iowa lose to UE. UNI didn't play bad, but I said when they had a 10 point lead at half that UNI did not look like a top 25 team. I saw Wichita State play this weekend against UE. Wichita State is a top 10-15 team.

As our SOS from the B1G improves, our RPI would expect to improve unless we start losing at a higher rate. Teams like Gonzaga drive me crazy. Their SOS was probably higher before their conference started than it will be at the end of the season. As they beat teams in their own conference, those teams may get a slight bump in the RPI thanks to playing Gonzaga.

The coaches and AP polls rank the teams based on how they are playing at the moment and may ignore who they played in the first week. A weak schedule isn't held against you until you lose and by how much. The human method can either give an extra break or make it more punitive for losses than the mathematical equations.

The NCAA doesn't rely on the computer rankings completely or we could figure without a doubt which at-large team will make it every year. This is why the rankings by the coaches and AP are important.Finish in the top 25 and you will be in the NCAA tournament regardless of RPI. Sagarin, or any other service.

I do recall one time when an AP top-20 team did not get in.

I want to say it was UNLV following their probation in 1995-96 (they were eligible but the committee sent a message).

Also it should be noted SMU was in both polls the week before Selection Sunday last year and didn't get in (and they were still top 25 in the Coaches Poll the day after). So being in the rankings isn't a guarantee either.

Who are the 5

Teams in conference that are better right now? I concede Wisconsin and understand we were handled at MSU. That said, if you feel 6 is right, which it may be, just curious as to who you feel the 5 better teams are at this point?

Re: I would prefer not to be ranked at this time. That's just more pressure

What?

23rd... not #1

This is still Indiana, there should be zero added pressure at 23.

I don't think there are five better, but Maryland should be in there

(even if we beat them Thursday). For me, the jury is still out on Iowa (although their win at UNC was impressive). IU is probably right there with Iowa and maybe OSU.
