IOWA CITY, Iowa -- No. 19 Indiana lost for just the second time in 15 games as the Hoosiers struggled to find a spark offensively in its series opener at Iowa, dropping a 2-0 decision to the Hawkeyes on Friday afternoon at Duane Banks Field.
Iowa's leadoff double in the first inning led to a 1-0 lead that the Hawkeyes maintained until adding another run in the eighth on IU's third error for what was ultimately the final score. Neither team had multiple baserunners on at once until the seventh inning.
The Hoosiers moved a runner to third base twice, but failed to score.
Logan Sowers, who reached after being hit by Tyler Peyton's pitch, advanced to third with one out in the fifth inning but was stranded there.
Against two outs in the top of the eighth,
Laren Eustace hit back-to-back singles to place runners on the corners for Indiana, but the Hoosiers left the top half of the inning scoreless.
Pitching was terrific for both teams. Despite the loss, Indiana's
Caleb Baragar pitched a career-high seven innings, dealing five strikeouts while allowing just one run on four hits. Peyton pitched all nine innings for Iowa, giving the Hoosiers just five hits.
