NEWS AND NOTES
• The Hoosiers are coming off a two-game preseason slate with a game in Bloomington and one at the Shindigz National Soccer Festival in Fort Wayne, Ind.
• Indiana dropped a 1-0 match to Xavier in Bloomington on Aug. 19, but bounced back for a 1-0 win over No. 6 Washington in Fort Wayne on Aug. 23.
• Against Xavier the Hoosiers out-shot the Musketeers by a 13-6 margin but could not find the back of the net, although they did find the crossbar three times.
• Indiana started the match strong with an 8-1 shot advantage in the first half, including a rocket from senior Patrick Doody in the sixth minute that bounced off the cross bar and under but did not quite make it past the goal line.
• Later in the first half it senior midfielder Jamie Vollmer that saw his shot punched up off the cross bar by Xavier goalkeeper Vince Shaw, but again kept out of the net and in the field of play.
• The goal was not Indiana's friend on this muggy night as a third attempt bounced off the top of the frame, this one coming by way of a header from sophomore Richard Ballard with under 30 minutes to play.
• Sophomore Colin Webb played all 90 minutes in goal for IU, needing to make just one save on the night. Freshman defender Grant Lillard got his first career start as a Hoosier, as did sophomore Derek Creviston and freshman Jay McIntosh.
• Freshmen Francesco Moore and Swartz also made their first appearances in the Cream and Crimson.
• Against No. 6 Washington on Aug. 23, Femi Hollinger-Janzen netted the lone goal in a 1-0 victory.
• The first 20 minutes of the match was a back-and-forth affair with neither team getting much going on the offensive side. With 21:15 to play in the first half, Hollinger-Janzen played a ball to Tanner Thompson on the right side as the sophomore brought it down but had his shot saved.
• With 11 minutes on the clock in the first period, Patrick Doody ran past his defender and played the ball into the box. Jay McIntosh made a run onto the ball but Washington goalkeeper Ryan Herman got a hand on it first. Less than three minutes later a give-and-go between Hollinger-Janzen and McIntosh led to a shot from McIntosh at a tight angle which went right into Herman's arms.
• Washington's best chance of the first half came with 5:54 to play as IU goalkeeper Colin Webb was forced to come off his line and punch out a pair of crosses. Justin Fiddes also got a shot off on that sequence, with Webb forced to make a quick reaction save at close range.
• After Andrew Oliver had a shot blocked 15 minutes into the second half, the Hoosiers finally broke through just minutes later with Hollinger-Janzen's score at 63:18. Coming from the left side Thompson played a ball centrally to Hollinger-Janzen, and the junior poked it past UW goalkeeper Spencer Richey for the only score of the match.
• A flurry of late shots from the Huskies that did not test IU goalkeeper Sean Weidman gave UW a 13-8 shot advantage for the match. Both teams finished with three shots on frame.
