IU has to get this hire right

This really is the last shot at this. It probably would already be too late pre nil but luckily we have tons of money to give. Woodson did alot of damage to the program but it can be fixed fast with nil and the right coach.
How has Woodson damaged the program? He wasn't a good coach, but that's fixable in 1 season.
He soured the relationship with Monteverde. He pissed off high school coaches. Geez he had a pure shooter Burger Boy 45 minutes away whose family loves IU....i can go on and on brother.
This cannot be a serious question? If you cannot figure that out then you must not have been following things very close the last four years.
That is just the tip of the iceberg. I cannot believe woodson still has supporters defending him but on this board a few still exist. Its mind blowing.
I tend to agree. Nothing he did is long term damage. A good hire rights the ship in year 1 and is off to the races.
He's gone. The next coach can fix that with a few phone calls. Especially with our payroll numbers (which Woodson probably earns some credit for, to be honest).

It does because of NIL luckily but pre NIL it would have been lasting damage. He is a super lazy recruiter and it sounds like he has no relationship with indiana hs coaches. He never built any foundation at all.
I've been following closely since Woodson played here. I stand by what I said.
The damage is already done...congrats on thinking a new gatekeeper fixes the last 2 years of recruiting.

A bit dramatic. Coach Cig literally took the worst football program in history to the playoffs and top 10 in one year. With the transfer portal and NIL money, any program can rise or fall dramatically year to year. That being said, I have zero confidence they'll get this hire right. I just don't see our basketball program ever being a perennial ranked program. We are basic AF now.

I believe we've done a better job at hiring coaches for football because Indiana football isn't anyone's destination program and there is zero pressure to live up to the 5 banners that hang above. Basketball is obviously a lot harder to hire because we've not done in well at all over the last 25 years. I think I read somewhere that the football program had been to the post season more than the basketball program over the last 10 years. Not sure if that's really true but are you kidding me? Part of the problem is the expectations are vastly different.

Since the program recovered from being burned to the ground by Kelvin Sampson’s carelessness, I think the program will bounce back fine from a few mediocre seasons.
Woodson’s first two seasons remind me of the late 1990’s. These last two, forgettable, like pretty much the entire Archie regime.

Feel like we have said this the last few coaching cycles. IU still has a rabid fan base, a state that produces talent and a history. With NIL being a factor, it only speeds up the process given their resources if utilized correctly. Nobody has to inherit what Crean did these days. They need a coach who can develop players who fit a system, and when the need arises utilizes the resources to make sure they get their guy. This isn't fantasy sports. Find a guy who builds a culture of winning with guys who compete and have a basketball IQ. Coaching still matters in college basketball. I hope winning the offseason means we retained and developed guys. Not chucked money at a kid who averaged 12 a game for a 7-11 team in another conference who wants paid. This program will and should attract guys who can get it done here as long as the fans expect it. Whether it is the next guy or this job opens up again in 3-5 years. The question is who can get it done. If Cignetti could turn around IU football, there has to be a handful of guys who would kill it here in basketball.

Not sure what “right” is in this context. So many fans want Stevens but he hasn’t coached in 3-4 years and hasn’t coached college in over 10 years. But many fans think he is the “right” hire. Idk anymore on Stevens…not that he’s coming. Imi Beard is a better fit and more relevant
I was intrigued by Fife’s comment when he was on with JMV. He was asked at what point when he got to IU that he knew it wasn’t going to go well and said stated day 2. I wonder at what point it dawned on Dolson that this was not going to go well??

I’m hard-pressed to give a guy credit for being such a lousy (lazy?) college coach that his inner-circle advocates deemed the necessity of a $6M payroll. That’s players only, right? Add all the insanely overpaid staff of every sort and role. Not a single soul should be retained. Clean ship top to bottom.
Probably when Quinn said trust me. I love that Quinn and Woodson were part of something great at IU. But just because they were great players didn’t automatically make them great at everything else they got involved in. I’m sure that most can agree that Quinn is not a very good analyst on TV… but I kind of look past that because of him being a legend. Time to let those in charge do their thing.
His call right after the Tom Pritchard thunder dunk is still the stuff of legends.
Yeah year one the new coach will be more reliant on the portal but depending who we hire there could be decommits and he can start rebuilding the HS pipelines.
